In the course of his research some of his fine maps came to the attention of King Louis XIII who, admiring the quality of his work, appointed Sanson'Geographe Ordinaire du Roi' Sanson's duties in this coved position included advising the King on matters of Geography and compiling the royal cartographic archive. Sanson's corpus of some three hundred maps initiated the golden age of French Cartography. Publisher: Pieter und David Mortier were booksellers in Paris and have published a wide range of geographical works. After Pieter's death, his widow continued the business until their son Cornelius took over. Cornelius started a partnership with his brother-in-law Johannes Covens and established the famous publishing house'Covens and Mortier' 1685-1866) in Amsterdam. Most likely this company was the largest map trader of his days. The image area measures 18.5 x 23.5 cm[7-1/4" x 9-1/4" The scans below give a closer look: Topography is shown in relief. And the map labels political divisions, cities, major towns, and rivers. It locates the mythical Lac de Chiamay, shown in the scan above— an enormous lake far to the northeast of the Bay of Bengal and postulated to be the source of at least four of the great Southeast Asian river systems: the Irrawaddy, the Dharla, the Chao Phraya, the Bramaputra, and the Mekong. Mithridatis Regnum. 49.5 cm x 34 cm copperplate engraving. 61 cm x 51 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Amsterdam, printed circa 1700 We are pleased to offer this exceptional and very scarce original map(Zacharakis#2109) of north central Anatolia extending along the Black Sea coast from the modern Turkish cities of to and as far south as published by the Franco-Dutch mapmaker Pierre Mortier(1661-1711) whose son Cornelis went on to form a partnership with his brother in law Jean Covens that published under the well known name Covens& Mortier well into the 19th century. A master engraver but not a cartographer. Pierre Mortier's maps are in fact close copies of earlier original works, in this case a historical map compiled in 1676 by the prominent French geographer Guillaume Sanson(1633-1703) for his atlas Cartes Générales ... morede la Géographie Anciennes et Nouvelles. Sanson. A pioneer in the field of historical cartography, sought to present the region as it was constituted in the days of the Roman Republic and later Roman Empire which called for some extensive scholarship for a region rarely mapped in any detail. Besides utilising the works of classical historians for placenames and features in his depiction of the Roman road network or cursus publicus Sanson turned to the famous. The only surviving map from the Roman era, repurposing its linear depiction to"modern" geography. Mortier's engraving work arguably improves upon Sanson's original map and is certainly superior to another contemporary copy published by Mariette around the same time. This fascinating map is quite uncommon, and this well preserved example would make a fine presentation if matted and framed. The title cartouche describes the general region as the realm of who. Sanson/ Jaillot This is a wonderful example of Jaillot's map of North America during colonial times based on Sanson's original map(1656) This map displays a number of geographical features and lack thereof that make this map an exceptional example North American history. One most notable geographical feature is the famous depiction of California as an island. Dotted along its coast are names of places still current in California today such as Mendocino. Monterey, Francisco, S. Barbara, and S. Diego among others. The space above California has been left blank since north-western Canada and Alaska had yet to have been discovered by Europeans. In the north central part of the ... moremap lays Buttons Bay which is actually a very small bay within Hudson Bay. In this map however, it is depicted as a large open ended channel of water leading into an empty space on the map. This hinted at a possible shortcut to the Pacific known as the Northwest Passage. Many sailors and explorers lost their lives in search of such a route. One last geographic feature worth noting is the depiction of the Great Lakes. All of the lakes are misshapen, Superior and Michigan are left open ended, Michigan is shown to lay horizontally, Huron is shown to be much larger than it really is, Ontario is fed by a separate river, Erie is completely landlocked, and in there is a sixth lake named Lac Nissipirinien that does not exist. A decorative cartouche adorns the map with dedication to Le Dauphin, and his coat of arms in top. Featured below are eight distance scales within another cartouche. This set is the typical design(large butter type knife and three prong fork) for the Civil War era. These pieces have wooden handles that appear to be walnut which is held in place by pewter. The knife is 9 1/4 inches long and the fork is 7 1/4" long. A set of this kind. In this excellent condition, is very rare, indeed. Gordon was commissioned by Charles I to complete the atlas of Scotland originally projected by with the King reqesting in a letter that Gordon work"to reveis the saidis cairtiss. Accordingly. Placenames are given in English and Sanson should not be considered as having performed any cartographic work although he does contribute a wonderfully baroque(if in no way related to Scotland) title cartouche and the ... moremap is handsomely engaved and laid out in his typically clean style of presentation. Exquisitely hand coloured& uncommon original antique map of Africa by Alexis Hubert Jaillot- after Nicolas Sanson- was engraved in 1692- the date is engraved in the scale cartouche. This is one of the most beautifully presented Jaillot maps I have seen for a while. Fantastic colour, clean and heavy ... morepaper and a deep clear impression, signifying an early pressing. This map is not to be confused with the later smaller more common version of the map published by Jaillot There are 5 editions of this map 1674. 1685, 1690, 1692& 1695. There are 16 recorded sales of this map between 1983& 2010. Being part of the Mediterranean world. The northern coasts of the African continent as far as the Straits of Gibraltar and even round to the area of the Fortunate Isles(the Canaries) were reasonably well known and quite accurately mapped from ancient times. In particular, Egypt and the Nile Valley were well defined and the Nile itself was, of course, one of the rivers separating the continents in medieval T-O maps. Through Arab traders the shape of the east coast, down the Red Sea as far as the equator, was also known but detail shown in the interior faded into deserts with occasional mountain ranges and mythical rivers. The southern part of the continent, in the Ptolemaic tradition, was assumed to curve to the east to form a land-locked Indian Ocean.
