Gielra, Gellero, Gelera and similar. The probable ancestor of the Counts of Guelders was Gerhard Flamens, who received Wassenberg as a fief from Emperor Henry II in 1020. His great-grandson Gerhard IV of Wassenberg was the first to call himself Count of Guelders(as Gerhard I) from 1096. The title"count" came from other properties, probably in Teisterbant. From 1125 only the title of Guelders was used. Wassenberg itself was given to the Duke of Limburg(and later to Jülich) as a wedding gift in 1107. The counts of Guelders moved their residence to the castle in Geldern, that was built probably around this date at the crossing of the Niers. The castle ... moreand the accompanying medieval settlement were the origin of the present city, and also gave its name to the county and later duchy of Guelders. The map is of course a close copy of the famous Braun and Hogenberg of London first published in 1572 and itself derived from a 1559 wall map commissioned by the Hanseatic League of which only three of the original 15 sheets survive today. Remarkably. Despite being slightly smaller than the Braun and Hogenberg Civitates copperplate map and being executed as a woodcut. The map includes a similar level ... moreof detail as the Braun and Hogenberg plate, a considerable achievement given the medium of the woodcut. Cosmographia featured thousands of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Town views, curiosities, monsters, scenes of everyday life as well as dramatic and sometimes horrific reconstructions of historic events. But it was also so successful because of its many woodcut maps, which as we shall see came to be something of a marketing challenge for Münster's eventual successor, the Basel-based publisher(1546-1627) In 1530 Münster married the widow of printer Adam Petri and the production of the Cosmographia was undertaken by her son Heinrich Petri. This item is guaranteed to be a genuine 17th century map.And it is in good condition with lovely strong(original? handcolouring. reasonable margins(the bottom one cropped a little?slight wear as expected at the centrefold, platemark visible, a little browned and foxed on the back.Remains of tape too on the back where previously held in a mount. But overall in good condition. The atlas is noted for its historical topographical detail. And each map depicts figures in the foreground(here 3 figures) which lend information regarding costume of the time. The atlas is also noted for its striking ... moredecorative touches- here a strapwork cartouche typical of the time, and coats-of-arms, one depicting an elephant, another a flying bird. Braun& Hogenberg. OXFORD(Oxonium) and WINDSOR(Vindesorium) Published in the Civitates Orbis Terrarum in Koln. 1575-1612. Framed and unmounted(double-glazed 570x460mm) with good margins and hand-coloured. Verso text in Latin. The engraving of Oxford is from the north, with two scholars in the right foreground. Windsor is also viewed from the north with a foreground group of nobles and a hunting scene just below the castle walls. There are two very small losses of area on the centrefold(which has been strengthened) and a tiny hole at centre near to the bottom border. c1570 Braun & Hogenberg "Penon de Veles" colored engraving. Map. Battle.
I obtained this engraving amongst a box of prints from an estate. From what I can gather this is c1570 It is titled"Penon de Veles" and was engraved by Giovanni Francesco Camocio and is a page section from Braun and Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum which was basically an atlas of the major cities of the period. The plate depicts a small rocky island under siege cannon fire from the land as well as from the sea. Fortifications with towers. Walls and planted flags can be identified on the sheer cliffs of the island. The Spanish, battling the resident pirates there, initially captured the island in 1508. Afterwards it fell under Moroccan rule for 42 years until the Spanish won it back 1564. Because the island was occupied constantly and difficult to hold, it was allegedly blown up in 1871. The map features a flamboyant title cartouche with two elegant supplemental cartouches and is astonishingly dense with hundreds of tiny towns and placenames. Capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia. COMMENTARY BY BRAUN(on verso) In the town hall there is an extraordinary beautiful clock. The like of which is found nowhere else in the whole world in the unanimous opinion of all informed masters. The clock not only shows the entire course of the year and naturally also the number of all the months and days and the complete calendar, but also the ascent and descent of all twelve signs of the zodiac. In the part of the city ... morethat leads down to the river towards the west, the Jews have their houses; this part might be compared with a small town. This view of the city from the north shows on the right the Hradcany castle with- rather cramped beneath it- the Lesser Quarter(Mala Strana) From where the Charles bridge leads into the Old Town. The Lesser Quarter was charted as an independent town in 1257, the old town having already received its own, separate charter in 1230. The Gothic Teyn church with its two towers can be seen on the left, directly above the bend in the Vltava River. Nearby stands the town hall, with Prague's famous astronimical clock, the Orloj. The clock was first installed in a simple form in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronimical clock in the world. The present plate offers a detailed view from the south of the all-dominating Hradcany. The wide steps that formerly led from St Matthew's gate up to the fortress complex can be seen on the left. Towering above its surroundings in the centre is St Vitus's cathedral, which was begun in 1344 and houses the tombs of Charles IV and his son Wenceslas IV.
