Geographer of the cataloge for his Majesty Monsier of le Dauphin. Circa: 1712 NOTE: Nicolas de Fer(1646–25 October 1720) was a French cartographer and geographer. He also was an engraver and publisher. In 1690. He became the official geographer to Louis, Dauphin of France. Auvergne was a historic province in south central France. It was originally the feudal domain of the Counts of Auvergne. It is now the geographical area that corresponds to the former province. Bourbonnais was a historic province in the centre of France t hat corresponded to the modern departement of Allier. Along with part of the department of Cher. The map has lots of topographical detail and shows numerous place names. Some of the features on the map are towns. Villages, rivers, hills, roads, bridges, estates and forests. The map is on hand laid paper and has a beautiful decorated title cartouche in the upper right corner. The map is greatly enhanced with later added hand coloring. It is blank of the reverse side. It measures approximately 29" x 21" Including the border area. The map has a good 3 1/2" border on the left and the right. The map is in Good condition. There is some age related browning and staining. Particularly along the edges. There are several chips and tears along the edges(these will not show when framed) The top edge is creased and the creases extend slightly into the very top. Middle portion of the map. The map has a crease/fold line down the middle from when it was originally bound. There are some pencil notes along the bottom right border by a previous owner. Qianlong Description: Offered is a Chinese export rouge de fer plate dating to the early Qianlong period(1740 to 1750) The central motif is a flowering branch of peonies which is outlined in iron red overlaid with gilt decoration. Green enamel suggesting leaves and the center of the peony flower further embellish the motif. The inner lip has a spearhead boarder. The outer boarder is composed of two alternating larger and smaller floral sprays in the same enamel scheme as the central motif. And which contain peony flowers and additional flowering plants. What makes this plate so interesting is that it could be a later Chinese version of botanical plates first made in China around 1735 from the designs of Maria Sybille Merian(1646-1717) A botanical artist ... morewho traveled to the East and later published a book of her drawings, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. I have included an image of one of the Merian plates for you to see the similarities in the pieces. We know that the Chinese were making their own variation of European designed porcelain. For example the original Pronk design of the Lady with the Parasol was later reworked by the Chinese. Isn’t it just possible that the Chinese used a previous European design for a plate as a basis for this plate? In any event it is wonderful. Subtle piece! This piece is part of a collection that I am currently helping a friend to liquidate. Her father assembled this collection of Chinese Export porcelain from the 1980’s until recently. Many of the pieces from his collection are highly unusual and are rarely seen in the current market. The pictures are black and white, while the floral pattern around the edge of the plates is a navy blue. They are all from the same series"A La Campagne" and the dishes are numbered. Offered are numbers1, 5, 7, 8, and 11. This company made other sets of series. Condition: These plates are no longer white. And have discolored over the years to a dark biege color. There are hairline cracks, small chips and rim scuffs.
