A fine antique map from The Times Survey Atlas of the World SIBERIA Provenance The Times Survey Atlas and Gazetteer of the World by J.G. Bartholomew Published London: The Times Printing House. 1922. All the maps we are selling come from the same original 1922 atlas. Cartographer J.G. Bartholomew. Cartographer to the King. Size/ Format 22.5" x 17.5" 57.6 cm x 44.8 cm) One fold in the centre. The margins are clean and range form 0.5" to 0.8" 1-2 cm) on all sides. These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Which means they can easily be removed as a single sheet with a fold in the centre. Condition Very Good. The colors are bright and fresh. The maps themselves. And the margins, are very clean. There are no tears, stains, discolorations or soiling whatsoever. The atlas from which these maps were removed did NOT ... morespend its life at a public library. It was part of a private collection and was treated very well. Note that slight differences in the colours of the margins are the result of my scanner being just wide enough to capture the width of the map. But not all of the margins. So, the parts of the margins have been added on after scanning. All the maps have full, uniformly coloured margins, as issued. Remarks The publication of the Times Survey Atlas in 1922 was the culmination of six years of painstaking work and. With the combination of political and the physical colour range from dark green to dark brown to indicate elevation, it marked the beginning of the age of'modern cartography. It surpassed any atlas before it in terms of scope(112 double-page folio map) and accuracy. Many of the maps published in this atlas were used in other atlases in many countries as recently as the 1970s. These maps will look great framed and hung individually or, on a large wall, in groups. Paternoster Row, London A lovely condition map of France from 1891 by one of the leading cartographers in the world at the time. Beautifully detailed and coloured. Ready to be mounted and framed. As with all the maps I am listing just now. Close examination can show many of the place names have since changed or simply do not exist, many borders and bounderies have been altered. It can be extremley interesting comparing with a modern map to see just how much the world has changed in the last 120 or so years. From humble beginnings in Edinburgh in the early part of the nineteenth century. The Bartholomew firm became the world's pre-eminent publisher of maps and atlases, carrying for many years the ... moretitle of Geographers and Cartographers Royal. Bartholomew maps have served as a benchmark for cartographic detail. Accuracy and variety, covering all areas of the globe, taking in all nature of geographical, topographical, geological, hydrographical, political and statistical detail. Their aesthetic qualities are cleverly balanced, drawing attention to the relevant detail graphically when required, but rarely over-decorating for no good reason. You may be interested to learn that it was Bartholomew's who introduced the standard convention of showing the British Empire as pink/red on world maps. A convention copied by map makers the world over. It was also Bartholomew's who christened the Southern Polar Continent(as it was known) as Antarctica. The map is undated on the plate. But I got it as part of a loose group of similar maps at auction about 15 years ago, and they came with the cover of the volume Descriptive Hand Atlas of the World— T. Ellwood Zell. 1871 Hand Colored Map of Spain and Portugal by John Bartholomew Publisher was A&C Black Great old map of Spain and Portugal for your consideration. Recently picked the piece up at an auction. The map is in two pieces at the seam where it was bound at one time. The map is not laid down in the matting. Just loose. The saran wrap is no longer over the map as took off to examine the map more closely. There are no rips or tears in the map with the exception of a 1 inch one on the border, just under Portugal and between the numbers 8 and 9. There is also an impression in the Mediterranean Sea, just above the"T" in Mediterranean. Also, another small tear on the border right border of the map between 38 and 39. The map is 23" across by 17" tall. The map is identified as being hand colored in the letter of authenticity. The ... moremap was also attributed to 1871 at the auction. But I do not see that year on the map or the letter of authenticity. I suspect the authenticity labels go back 25-30 years ago, but you be the judge. An attractive map on heavy paper. Published in the International Atlas and Geography. A nice feature of this atlas is that the maps were individually bound along their long edge. Resulting in fairly large maps without a centrefold. This map measures approx 40cm x 30cm excluding margins. Condition is very good. A strong impression that remains clean and bright image; a small amount of faint brown age spotting. Mainly in the margins; one light brown mark in Egypt and a spot just south of Bagdad. Top right edge is rather creased, where originally bound. Verso blank and very clean. The map will be posted rolled in a wide-diameter tube.
