1784 Bayly Map- A New Map of Turky in Europe John Bayly was an engraver who worked in London. England in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Much of his output was single cartographic items of larger size and he did little work for the atlas publishers of the day. However his one venture into mass map publishing was for John Harrison who published William Martyn's'The Geographical Magazine or a New, Copious, Compleat and Universal System of Geography' in 1784. This map of Turkey in Europe comes from the Geographical Magazine. It has very clear. Simple engraving and the oval title ignores the customary vignette, common to so many maps of the time. Like his contemporary, John Cary, Bayly brings cartography into the more recognizable, modern approach. The map names the countries- Dalmatia. And the other side has Servia and Rumania(Serbia and Romania) This is an original page from 1894, not a reprint or copy. Because the page is double-sided, only one side can be displayed at once. However, there are no copyright restrictions on the maps so one of the sides could be copied if you'd like to display both. Condition: Good. Aging around the margins, which just adds to the appeal of the old map. The paper is fairly fragile, so map page will need to be protected from less than careful handling. Note: the page was just a bit too big for the scanner, so part of the margin area is not shown. It was still a small shipyard city, being awarded city status in 1860, when it became a province capital. It became a sanjak centre in Silistre Eyaleti in 1860 and Tuna Vilayeti in 1864. With names such as Vrhov, Orezov, Oreov and Rahovo being mentioned in documents until the current one was officially established in 1886. The area around Oryahovo has been inhabited since ancient times. As archaeological research has proven with findings from the early Neolithic to the Late Middle Ages. A fortress called Kamaka is located 1 km east from Oryahovo, which existed from the 9th to the 14th century. Centered on Bulgaria and includes the Bosphorus and Constantinople. The Danube and its tributaries flow across the map and are the focal point. It is adorned with strapwork title cartouche and a unique block style distance scale in the opposite corner. Latin text on the verso. Cartographer: Gerard Mercator(1512- 1594) is a seminal figure in the history of cartography. ... moreMercator's calculations and map designs redefined the 16th century concept of cartography and were the first to break away from the Ptolemy model. Many of his systems of measurement. Such as the Mercator Projection, are still in use today. Despite his prominence as a cartographer, he started his career as a crafter of scientific instruments. He did not construct his first map until 1540, when he made two maps, one of Flanders and another of Palestine.
