When viewing a map in terms of Mercator’s projection. There is a distortion at the north and south poles. The land sizes of the continents closest to the equator are smaller than they really ... moreare. But Mercator maps are very useful for sailors or pilots for finding direction.

1585 (1633) MERCATOR Map BAVARIA South of the Danube
Bavaria Ducatus 47 cm x 36 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 47 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved in Duisburg circa 1585, printed in Amsterdam 1633 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the map(Van den Krogt 2660:1A1) of the region of Bavaria south of the Danube including the cities of Munich. Augsburg and Salzburg compiled by the renowned(1512-1594) Mercator first published the map for the 1585 edition of his Atlas. And this example is from the 1633 German edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Mercator's eponymous world map. Which in the felicitous phrase of his Nicholas Crane"reconciled the sphere and the plane" Combined with his unsurpassed dedication and skill as a cartographer and engraver make him without question the most famous mapmaker of all time. The master engraver(and a fine ... moregeographer in his own right) 1563-1612) purchased Mercator's map copperplates from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as the foundation of the Atlas Hondius added maps of his own. A practice later continued by his sons Jodocus II(1593-1629) and Henricus(1597-1651) and their brother in law Jan Jansson(1588-1664) that allowed the eventual publication of nearly 50 editions in multiple languages of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Given the quality of the cartography and the superb engraving work including elegant calligraphy. It is no surprise that Mercator's maps were still unsurpassed and continued to be issued decades after the plates were engraved as is the case here. Wonderfully decorative. This well-preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the finest calibre, and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the handsome title cartouche and Mercator's original publishing privilege- note pictorial topography and forests: The Danube enters at upper left with Oettingen spilling over into map border- note tiny bridge at Ingolstadt: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Landau an der
1853 Perthes Map of Australia and Polynesia in Mercator's Projection
1853 Perthes Map of Australia and Polynesia in Mercator's Projection WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Australien und Polynesien in Mercators Projection. Description: A fascinating example of the 1853 Perthes map of Australia and Polynesia. This map covers from Southeast Asia eastward as far as the Gulf of California. And from Japan Southwards to include all of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. This map corrects many of the cartographic errors of the previous century and consequently most coastlines accurately rendered. Inland though, much remains confused and only tenuously explored. Vast stretches of unmapped territory and speculative cartography fill central Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Political and regional borders are highlighted in outline color. Unlike other cartographic publishers ... moreof the period, the Justus Perthes firm did not transition to lithographic printing techniques. Instead, all of their maps are copper plate engravings and hence offer a level of character and depth of detail impossible to find in lithography or wax-process engraving. All text is in German. Designed and drawn by Friedrich von Stülpnagel and issued as plate no. 50a in the 1854 edition of Stieler’s Hand-Atlas. Size: Printed area measures 16.5 inches high by 13.5 inches wide. Antique Vintage Old Large 50 x 33 1950-1960 's Mercator's Projection World Map
This is a very nice large late 1950's to 1960's World Map. It is Mercator's Projecton Map that is quite large and very vivid in color. The map is 55 inches x 33 inches which is quite large when it comes to maps. It was very hard to get a picture of the whole map due to it's size. The map is in good condition and folds up well. Would look great with a corregated backing and would be a nice wall hanging. Thanks for looking.

Such as the Mercator Projection, are still in use today. Despite his prominence as a cartographer, he started his career as a crafter of scientific instruments. He did not construct his first map until 1540, when he made two maps, one of Flanders and another of Palestine. These two impressive works earned him the patronage of the Emperor Charles V, for whom he construed a globe and several large scale maps. Despite this imperial patronage, Mercator was accused of heresy and in 1552 fled to Duisburg. In Duisburg he set himself up as a cartographer and began work on his revised edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. This three volume work was the first book to be called an"Atlas" after the Titan and King of Mauritania. Following Mercator's death his descendants took over his firm but languished because of heavy competition from the Ortelius firm. It was not until Mercator's plates were purchased and republished( Mercator/ Hondius) by Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson that Mercator's position as the preeminent cartographer of the age was re-established. Vast stretches of unmapped territory and speculative cartography fill central Africa and Australia. In Africa. Lake Nyasa is shown only speculatively. Neither Mt. Kenya nor Mt. Kilimanjaro are shown though the apocryphal Mountains of the Moon stretch across the continent. The sea between Japan and Korea, whose name, either the'Sea of Korea' or the'Sea of Japan' is currently a matter of historical and political dispute between the two countries, ... moreis here identified in favor of Japan. The map is color coded according to continents with counties named but their boundaries not defined. Various important cities, rivers, islands, mountain ranges, and several other topographical details are noted with relief shown in hachures. 1832 Lapie Map of the World on Mercator Projection
1832 Lapie Map of the World on Mercator Projection WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Mappe-Monde sur la Projection de Mercator. Description: A fine first edition example of M. Lapie’s 1831 map of the world on a Mercator projection. Lapie’s map offers fine detail throughout with elevation rendered by hachure and political boundaries demarcated with outline hand color. A stunning map. Lapie very curiously centers his chart on Australia(Nouvelle Hollande) with the old and the new worlds appearing to the left and right, respectively. Cartographically it represents the most up to date discoveries of the time though limited geographical knowledge, particularly in Africa, Australia, and Central Asia, is in evidence. In Africa there is no trace of the great Rift Valley lakes and the source of the White Nile is set in the ... morespeculative Mountains of the Moon. The interior of Australia is blank though the coastal colonies around Botany Bay, including Sydney are noted. The disputed sea between Japan and Korea is here identified as the“Sea of Japan” This map was engraved by Armand Joseph Lallemand as plate no. 16 in the first edition of M. Lapie’s important Atlas Universel. This map, like all maps from the Atlas Universel features an embossed stamp from the Lapie firm. Size: Printed area measures 16.5 inches high by 22 inches wide. Size unfolded: 66cm x 51cm Size folded(in its case) 17cm x 11.8cm Features include identification of uninhabited islands. Submarine cables, active ... morevolcanoes etc, equatorial and counter-currents, reefs, colonies in full colour, relief shown by shading and spot heights, soundings in fathoms, etc. Condition: the map is about good overall. The paper and linen have tanned slightly with age. There is 1cm square of rubbing in the fourth section across the top. Although this does not appear to have resulted in any loss to any information. A couple of very small ink notations to the margin. The linen has has been repaired in a couple of places with durable pale green cloth. There is a 9cm split to one of the folds. The map is securely bound into its case. The case boards are in decent shape with a little rubbing to the corners. And some soiling to the label. The spine has been reinforced with the same green cloth used to reinforce the linen. In spite of these faults. This is an attractive and interesting map.
