1784 Bayly Map- A New Map of Italy John Bayly was an engraver who worked in London. England in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Much of his output was single cartographic items of larger size and he did little work for the atlas publishers of the day. However his one venture into mass map publishing was for John Harrison who published William Martyn's'The Geographical Magazine or a New, Copious, Compleat and Universal System of Geography' in 1784. This map of Italy comes from the Geographical Magazine. It has very clear. Simple engraving and the oval title ignores the customary vignette, common to so many maps of the time. Like his contemporary, John Cary, Bayly brings cartography into the more recognizable, modern approach. The map names the provinces and major towns and cities. And there is a scale of distance. IL. it is the oldest map in my collection. Mounted on a steel and hardwood spring-loaded roller frame, it is ready for hanging. Please be aware that these National Geographic Maps are anywhere from 20 to 80 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past.
