1590 Lovely Porcacchi Map of Venice
1590 Porcacchi Map- Venetia Tommaso Porcacchi was the author of'Isolario' A superb early book about(mostly) islands. It was first published in 1572 in Venice by Simon Galignani and Girolamo Porro, with Porro himself engraving the lovely, ornate but clear maps. These were re-issued several times and the worn plates were then re-engraved for the scarce 1686 edition. This is the only edition where the maps have plain backs and are not set between text. This map of Venice is one of the most prized of Porcacchi maps. It shows the island state still near the height of its powers. The circular lagoon encloses the several islands and a variety of vessels can be seen offshore. It is from a 1590 edition with the text below the map. One of the first maps of Biblical Israel in printed books. Signature on Title page of Yitzchak Marpurgo. Italy mid-18th century. Friend of Ephraim Luzzato, a poem is written in his honor in Eleh Bene Hane'urim of Luzzato. Scattered rabbinic marginalium on several pages seem to be in the hand of Marpurgo. Leaf 7 is lacking and has been filld in entirely by hand. In neat Italian Hebrew script, most probably in Marpurgo's hand as well. Sefer ha-Mizrachi is a supercommentary on Rashi's commentary on the Torah. It is counted in its own right as among the most important commentaries on the Torah. Mizrachi himself considered his commentary on Rashi the most important of his works(Responsa. Nos. ... more5, 78) The work shows Rashi's Talmudic and midrashic sources, and elucidates all obscure passages. It was written, partially, to defend Rashi from the strictures of the later commentators, particularly Nachmanides. Gastaldi's Carta Marina includes the earliest obtainable depictions of the California peninsula, is the earliest obtainable copperplate world map for collectors. Includes Gastaldi's belief in a continuous northern landmass, the isthmus reported by Verrazano in 1524, which closes the northern continents into as unbroken ring. The Asia-America connection was a standard concept, and one of which Gastaldi actively advocated. The joining of North America and Europe is unusual, resulting from two errors. In the east, Gastaldi depicts Greenland as an outgrowth of Scandinavia, based upon Waldseemuller. In the west, Gastaldi follows Verrazano’s model of North America. On the Atlantic coast by Gastaldi notes a green mountain and a large, unnamed cape pointing upwards. This cape, based upon Ramusio’s' map of 1534, first appeared in Ribero’s manuscript chart of 1529, as well as later works, such as Jode’s North America. The cape is believed to be Cape Cod, as both the Ribero and Ramusio maps reflect the reconnaissance

In the heady years after Gutenberg launched his moveable-type system of printing in the mid-1400s. Publishers might have seemed pretty reckless turning out Bibles in their native tongue considering the stance of the Catholic Church(and its Inquisition) on such matters. In the field of maps, however, they showed more caution, limiting themselves to sketching out the ideas put forward by Claudius Ptolemy of Alexandria in the second century AD, and handed down, via Arabic translations, to scholars in medieval Europe. These maps have a decidedly unconvincing appearance, despite the latitude and longitude framework on which they are laid out. They were certainly ignored by anyone setting out on serious travelling- Colombus, Vasco da Gama, Alburquerque, for instance- who used their own private, zealously-guarded. secret charts. Copies of Ptolemy's"Geographia" ... morewere probably snapped up by scholars and book-worms, who savoured the felicities of logic, theory and arm-chair travel more than getting their boots wet and muddy in the world outside. Numerous editions of Ptolemy's maps were brought out in Italy and Germany throughout the 16th century. Italy leading the way with a copper-engraved atlas coming out in Bologna in 1477. The German's favoured the wood-cut method of engraving, and published an improved version of the Bologna atlas in Ulm in 1482. Later on, as information from the first explorers filtered back and leaked out, publishers began to add"Nova Tabulae" incorporating new discoveries and more accurate coastlines at the back of their Ptolemeic atlases. The first new map of Asia, for instance was put out by Waldseemuller around 1510. At auction here. This folder measures approximately 22 in. by 34 in. when opened out flat. No date that I can see. But Hughes Airport is on it(opened in 1940, apparently) Santa Monica Airport is still called Clover Field, LAX is called Mines Field, the Pacific Electric Railway is there, and Marina del Rey is undeveloped.
