Antique 1630 Jan Janssonius Map of Bohemia Hand Colored Framed Rare! No Reserve!
This auction is for a rare hand colored map of Bohemia from 1630. This map was made by Petrus Kaerius and published by Joannes Janssonius. Also known as Jan Jansson. Jan Jansson was one of the greatest cartographers and map publishers of his time and the son in law of Hondius. This map is composed of two pages of an atlas and is framed with glass on both sides so the text is visible on the reverse. This map is about 22" by 18" and is in excellent condition. There is some very light foxing and a few pencil marks on the edges of the map, but no tears, holes, or stains. The frame has some wear and scratches but is also in excellent condition. This map is beautifully hand colored and has two crests at the top corners. This is a rare map and very hard to find in this condition. ANTIQUE POMERANIA MAP 1630S J JANSSONIUS AMSTERDAM FRAMED ORIGINAL SAILING SHIPS
Up for your consideration is a beautiful quality Antique Map of Pomerania. The map was done in the 1630's by Johannes Janssonius a cartographer and publisher born in 1588. His father was a publisher and bookseller. He married the daughter opf a cartograpgher and puiblisher and set up a business in Amsterdam as a book publisher. He published his first maps in 1616 and contiued publishing a large amount of maps. From 1630 to 1638 he was in partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius. The map shows Pomnerania and the island of Rugen. There are 4 nicely hand colored cartouches and a heraldic cartouche. The map shows ships sailing in the ocean with a sea serpent close to the center of the map. One of the cartouches shows the king of Popmerania Bugislav Ivnior XIV. There is also a Coat of Arms. In another cartouche it reads Nortarum ... moreExplicatio Urbes. Urbes cum arcibus, Ducalibus, Pagi. The bottom right hand corner reads Nova Illustraissimi Ducatus Pomeraniae Tabula, antea a Viro cl.d.d. Eilhardo Lubino edita, nune iterum correcta per Frid.Palbitzke, Pomer. L.L. Studiosum. The bottom left cartouche shows the distances on the map, and reads Amstelodami, Apud Ioannem IanBonium. The map is very detailed and shows castles, forests,cities, lakes and rivers. I believe the Baltic Sea surrounds the land. The map seems to be in good condition with some discoloration here and there and a small tear in the upper left hand corner. The frame looks like an older one with wood nails and I believe is maple. The paper on the back of the picture looks newer and was replaced at some point. The map has writing on the back that you can see thru the paper. This must have come out of a book because there is a crease down the middle of the map. I'm no experty on antique maps and got my information by research on line. Please ask questions if in doubt and I'm always interested in any info if you know more about this map. With image measuring 49cm x 38.5cm Central fold. Lightly browned to margins and in places. The reverse is uniformly browned, and there is scattered foxing. There are a few little nicks to the edges, little tear to the bottom edge, and the bottom corner tips have tiny chip. The left edge has very slight crease to very edge, and there are a couple of faint creases. Straits of Magellan- Chile Argentina Patagonia Lovely hand-coloured engraved map. DESCRIPTION] For your consideration is a Beautiful Hand Colored Antique Map of Denmark. Daniae Regni Typum- Janssonius J. 1630. The solid wood frame measures 31" by 27" by 2" This absolutely stunning map features decorative borders and several pictures including that of Tycho Brahe who was a Danish Nobleman born in Denmark. The map paper does show some slight toning and age but I see no tares, wrinkles, or folds. The colors are vibrant and the paper appears to be a heavy stock. Unfortunately its framed and I'm unable to see the verso or provide any additional information than what I see. There are very few examples of this map on the internet and therefore I cannot say with any certainty what its provenance is.
