No date shown but it does show the population of the whole country as being 2,392,740 and this was the number shown in the census for 1850-60. The map shows the routes to Switzerland from London, Paris, Nice, Naples and Konigsberg together with all of the cantons. The map is backed on linen and is in 24 sections- total size is 36" by 24" Comes in its original paper slipcase which is now very battered. As always with maps of Switzerland the text is in English, French, Italian and German. It is marked Made in Switzerland and dates. I would guess, to the late 1800s. The scales reads'Inches to Miles or Verstes' and'Centimeters to Kilms. There is a castle logo flanked by the letters'F' and'C' at the end with the wheel. The gauge is 1 3/8 inches in diameter and the length including the brass handle is 4 1/2 inches. The dial is covered by a glass crystal that is cloudy in the center. The gauge works perfectly with the wheel turning in either direction and the hand moving accordingly. Switzerland Cartographer: Alvin Jewett Johnson(September 23. 1827- April 22, 1884) was a American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. The 1864 issue of the Family Atlas is the first true Johnson and Ward atlas. Johnson maps from the Family Atlas are notable for their unique borders. Of which there are four different designs, the"strapwork borer" from 1860 to 1863, the"fretwork border" from 1863 to 1869 and the"spirograph border" in 1870– 1882, and a more elaborate version of the same from 1880-1887. Some moderate scattered foxing as typical, light dampstain at top corner, but these do not detract from the interest or appeal of the map[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing.
