Beautifully detailed, and high-quality map, divided into 4 sheets, and presented in the attractive original case. Each of the four sheets has been dissected into 12 sections, and mounted on cloth/ linen. The sheets are individually numbered from 3-6. And fit very snugly into the case, which suggests the map could have been made up to order. The sheets form a continuous progression from furthest West to furthest East as follows: Sheet 6: Seine. With signs of tanning to the paper, and signs of wear and use, including a brief handwritten itinerary note to one of the sections in its top white margin. The linen remains in decent shape, pretty clean, with some signs of wear. The preservation of the map is thanks to the case. Which remains quite solid. Although it is quite worn to the extremities, with fading and marks to the aubergine/ brown coloured cloth, this gives it(in my opinion) much character, and it remains quite attractive. The title label(South America, Edward Stanford) remains legible. A lot of the labelling is in German. In line with accreditation to A. Petermann, Stieler's Hand-Atlas etc. I could not spot a date. Edward Stanford(1827-1904) was a publisher. Engraver who worked out of premises at 6 C ha ring Cross in London's West End. He took over the Society for Diffusion of useful Knowledge and issued the"Family At las" from 1857 until 1875. The map shows most of North and South America. Condition: Excellent. Engraved on heavy paper, original outline coloring, no folds. Dim ensions: 260 x 280mm;10.0 x 11.0 inches. There are very wide margins all round. The map is guaranteed to be about 150 years old. London Atlas Map of the Pacific Islands Edward Stanford Size unfolded: 66cm x 51cm Size folded: 17cm x 11.8cm A large. Very rare and attractive map, dissected into 18 sections and backed on to linen/ cloth. It features Micronesia. Polynesia, Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Eastern Australia, and New Zealand. The map is in decent shape overall. The paper is slightly tanning with age. There is a small patch about 1cm square in the fourth section across the top where some of the image of the map has come away leaving white paper underneath(just about visible in the photo) However. This does not appear to have resulted in any loss to any information on the map itself. There are a couple of very small notations to the edge of the map. The linen has tanned with age. And has been repaired in a couple of places. There is a 9cm split in the linen between ... morethe 12th and 18th sections(see photo) The map is securely bound into blue cloth boards. The spine has been reinforced with the same pale green material used to reinforce the map itself(see photo) The boards are in decent shape with signs of wear here and there including to the corners. There are 18 fold sections: 3 rows of 6 sections each; the sections are about 4 1/2 inches by 6 3/4 inches. The linen at the folds is intact. Unfolded the map measures 19 inches by 26 inches. The front cover has a yellow label printed"London Atlas Map of the Pacific Ocean" London: Edward Stanford, Ltd. Cartographers to His Majesty the King. 12,13& 14 Long Acre, W.C.2. Inside the front cover are two printed yellow label advertisements: one for"Stanford's Compendium of Geography& Travel" and one for"Stanford's Library Maps" the former also has small label(not, I think,part of original) C.S. The spine has been reinforced with the same green cloth used to reinforce the linen. In spite of these faults. This is an attractive and interesting map.

Size unfolded 103.2 x 78.2cm. Case size: 12.3 x 17.5cm. A historically significant British. Russian, Japanese and Chinese Imperial map published at the climax of the Great Game. In 1904 Francis Younghusband entered the Tibetan Holy City of Lhasa under orders from Curzon to settle the Tibet-Sikkim border, and the Russo-Japanese War started at Port Arthur in Manchuria just weeks after this map was published. Russia's losses during this war led to revolution in 1905, and in September 1905 Britain and Russia signed a peace treaty effectively ... moreending Tsarist Russia's Forward Policy in Asia. Slightly tanned around edges. A few light dusty marks, otherwise both sheets are clean and bright, no foxing. Both sheets have been trimmed to form tabbed side edges(presumed to be original) ½" to 1" closed tears into borders from these tabs. Tears to edges at top and bottom of folds on both sheets. July 2nd 1875 This is a large linen backed folded map measuring approx 75cm x 80cms. The red cloth cover is in worn condition- mostly on the spine at the folds where the cloth is torn and split. The map is still firmly attached to the cover. The map has a small amount of wear at the linen folds and there is a 2cm tear in the fold where it attaches to the cover. I removed them from the atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimetres(and inches) Sheet: 370 x 375(14½ x 12) Map: 484 x 338(12¾x 10) These maps are printed on one side only of fine. Smooth paper, They were'tipped in' to the atlas so it was easy to remove them without damaging them in any way. Condition The maps are in Near Fine condition. There are no marks. Tears, or blemishes at all. They seem to have almost never been touched by human hands. ... moreThey are definitely NOT ex-library. The paper is crisp and white. Remarks These maps will look great framed. Many are very brightly colored. The atlas documents the many territorial changes following World War 1 by providing an unusual selection of maps.
