His son(Johann Christoph Homann) re-engraved the plate to correct the western coastline of North America, shown here extending very far west and north, with very little detail. California is no longer shown as an island, although the remnants of the interior sea can be seen near the Pais de Moozemleck where a river nearly connects with the Mississippi River system, hinting at the possibility of a Northwest Passage. The Great Lakes are taking shape, being actively explored by the French fur traders and the Hudson Bay Company. The Solomon Islands are prominently placed in the Pacific, considerably too far to the east. While this combination may seem odd to us today, to the 18th century European, reared on the works of Marco Polo and steeped in the legends of wealth associated with the orient, it represented the legendary Silk Route ... moreacross Asia as well as the eastern and western most claims of the expanding Russian Empire. During this period, both the Caspian Sea and Kamchatka were actively being explored by European powers eager to exploit the riches of Asia. The left hand map, focusing on the Caspian Sea, marks a significant step forward in the mapping of this region, reflecting the 1719- 1721 survey work of the Russian navy officer Karl van Verden. Verden's work, completed shortly before this map's publication was the most advanced mapping of the Caspian sea to date, offering a new perspective on the region and opening the navigational possibility of the world's largest lake. The right hand map depicts Kamchatka. Though only tentatively explored at this point, Russian forces under Vladimir Alassov took control of the peninsula in 1697. In the process they stumbled upon a small colony of Japanese shipwreck survivors, a discovery that lead the Russians to speculate that Kamchatka was one and the same with Yedso(Jedo or modern day Hokkaido) the northernmost part of Japan. 1743 Map of Bavaria Here is an original 1743 engraving of the surrounding area of Munich Germany. It was published in Nuremburg. Germany by the Homann Heirs. Copper-engraving. Hand colored in wash and outlined. Its overall measurement is 24" wide by 21" high. I recently had this map appraised as authentic by Swann Galleries and its auction value is $600-$800. It is in very good condition with no restoration. Marks, tears or folds. Being from an atlas it has a center fold line which has no breaks or splits. There is light foxing which can be seen in the photos. I show the back side to see the paper condition as well as to help verify its authenticity. The Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. Doppelmayer constructed this map to illustrate the lunar mapping of Johannes Hevelius(left) and Giovanni Battista Riccioli(right) The left hand lunar map, composed by Hevelius, is a considered a foundational map in the science of Selenography– or lunar cartography. This map first appeared in Hevelius’ 1647 work Selenographia ... morewhich laid the groundwork for most subsequent lunar cartographic studies. Here the moon is presented as it can never be seen from Earth, at a greater than 360 degrees and with all visible features given equal weight. In this map Hevelius also establishes the convention of mapping the lunar surface as if illuminated from a single source– in this case morning light. The naming conventions he set forth, which associate lunar features with terrestrial locations such as'Asia Minor' Persia' Sicilia' etcetera were popular until the middle of the 18th century when Riccioli’s nomenclature took precedence. The Riccioli map, on the right, is more properly known as the Riccioli-Grimaldi map, for fellow Jesuit Francesco Grimaldi with whom Riccioli composed the chart. Rare! c.1712 Homann Map of Scotland!
Up for auction is a rare map of Scotland c.1712 made by Johann Baptist Homann(1664-1724) This map predates the transfer of his firm to his sons in 1731(at which point the maps were printed with Homann Heirs or Latin equivalents of that instead of just his name) Map is in good condition for its age. As you can see. The peripheral has seen better days, but the map itself is unaffected by this. There are some folds and creases here and there, but it remains flat. There are also some small stains present, but nothing too detracting. There is a stain across the center from the strip on the back where it was originally adhered to an atlas, but this is common. The colors didn't show up very well in my photos, and it is bolder and brighter than what you see! Overall a great piece of cartographic history! The left hemisphere of Tabula Selenographica depicts the lunar map according to Johannes Hevelius. A brewer from Gdansk, whose Selenographica was the first treatises devoted entirely to the moon. This map showed all features of the moon equally– a composite view that showed the Moon in a way that it never appeared in reality, but had accurate placement of the moon’s surface features. The founder of selenography(named after Selene, the goddess of the moon) Hevelius’ nomenclature was always based on earthly features. This nomenclature was used by all Protestant countries until the eighteen century, when it was replaced by a naming system published in 1651 by Jesuit astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli. Homann was born in Oberkammlach, a small town near Kammlach, Bavaria, Germany. As a young man Homann studied in a Jesuit school and nursed ambitions of becoming a Dominican priest before converting to Protestantism in 1687. Following his conversion, Homann moved to Nuremberg and found employment as a notary. Around 1693 Homan briefly relocated to Vienna, where he lived and studied printing and copper plate engraving until 1695. Afterwards he returned to Nuremberg where, in 1702, he founded the commercial publishing firm that would bear his name. In the next five years Homann produced hundreds of maps and developed a distinctive style characterized by heavy detailed engraving, elaborate allegorical cartouche work, and vivid hand color. But it's in pretty darn nice shape for its age(1781) with nice wide margins for framing.
