Poictou- Pictaviensis Comitatus 50 cm x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving. 56 cm x 47 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved circa 1628, printed 1633 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the finely engraved map(Van der Krogt 4500:1B) of the Poitou region of France. Centred on the city of Poitiers, from the 1633 German edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The map was compiled by Jodocus Hondius II(1594-1629) shortly before his premature death as part of a projected atlas project. His father(1563-1612) purchased the map copperplates of the renowned Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as the foundation of the Atlas the senior Hondius added maps of his own. A practice later continued by his sons and their brother in law Jan Jansson that allowed the eventual publication ... moreof nearly 50 editions in multiple languages of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The cartography is based on Mercator's 1585 map which this plate newly replaced for this edition of the Atlas. Beautifully engraved with charming decorative elements. This well-preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the coast near La Rochelle where we find the map visually anchored by a beautiful compass rose wi th radiating rhumb lines. A handsome sea monster swims into view above three meticulously engraved ships with ornate rigging: Title cartouche. Münster's magnum opus, the encyclopedic Cosmographia featured hundreds of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Town views, curiosities, monsters, scenes of everyday life as well as dramatic and sometimes horrific reconstructions of historic events. However its success ... morewas also due to its many woodcut maps, groundbreaking in their day but which later came to be something of a marketing challenge for Münster's eventual successor, the Basel-based publisher(1546-1627) In 1530 Münster married the widow of printer Adam Petri and the production of the Cosmographia was undertaken by her son Heinrich Petri. With demand for the book undiminished. His son Sebastian Heinrich had taken over the publication by the 1580s. However, with the advent of the magnificent copperplate engraved maps and atlases published by Ortelius and others the original woodcut maps of the Cosmographia dating back to the 1540s were in some cases erroneous and out of date. More importantly. Though, in comparison to the new copperplate maps and their ornate engraving work many of the old woodcut maps of the Cosmographia were truthfully rather crude in appearance. Sebastian Petri's solution was an elegant one- he revised Münster's maps as needed(often drawing upon Ortelius but also keeping much of Münster's original layout and design) and had new wood blocks cut"in the copperplate style" complete with ornate calligraphy and charming

Fine. Original, steel-engraved plan of ancient Rome, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. The idea for the town plans, of which the SDUK published many dozens, was that of W. B. Clarke, an architect, who became an enthusiastic advocate for the plans, and who executed most of ... morethem himself, often on the basis of personal on-site observations. The plans are highly decorative, and often have accompanying vignettes, or sketches of the main buildings. Plindeburg in Ungarn 14.5 cm x 9.5 cm copperplate engraving. 18.5 cm x 15 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Eberhard Kieser, Frankfurt, 1627 We are pleased to offer this scarce original print of a view of the Hungarian town of(German name Plintenburg) on the right bank of the Danube from the monumental atlas of town views compiled by the poet Daniel Meisner and the publisher Eberhard Kieser. First published as Thesaurus Philopoliticus in 1623 and later known as the Sciographia Cosmica. This work is a fascinating combination of two popular genres- the Emblem Book and the Book of Town Plans, e.g. the Civitates of Braun and Hogenberg. Under Kieser's supervision. The collection of town plans with allegorical imagery continued to be expanded after Meisner's death in 1625, eventually comprising over 800 engravings in an edition published ... moreby Paulus Fürst in Nürnberg in 1678. This extraordinary collection of European town views features cities and towns from diverse countries and provides a fascinating window into the 17th century, all enhanced by emblematic imagery that is often cryptic, sometimes even bizarre but always unique and masterfully engraved. The view shows the hilltop castle that at the time the plate was engraved was occupied by Ottoman forces(note cannon fire) and was not liberated until 1685. To get a sense of the minute precision of the engraving work consider that the entire image(not including verses) is contained in a 14 cm x 7 cm rectangle! Each engraving is distinguished by a motto above the image and epigrammatic verses(usually in Latin and German) beneath. The detail of the engraving work in these small prints is remarkable. And in this example is elegantly enhanced by exceptionally skilled hand colour work. Among the master engravers and illustrators that contributed to this series were the renowned.
