Laboulaye's Fairy Book / NY Harper 1st Edn 1866-7 / Plum Cloth w/Engravings!
Laboulaye. Edouard: Laboulaye's Fairy Book. Fairy Tales of All Nations. New York: Harper& Bros. 1867. First Edition; read on: There seems to be some confusion regarding the actual publication date of this book. The copyright was entered in 1866. But the title page shows 1867. One would ordinarily ASSUME a second or very early printing; but like another copy I've researched, this copy has a Christmas inscription to the front free endpaper ~ which means the book was obviously available to the buying public prior to the year 1867. Added to that is the fact that no less a personage as LW Currey(whose Science Fiction& Fantasy Authors is a standard reference) states his copy from 1867 is a first edition as well. VERY SCARCE: we locate only 7 copies of this edition for sale worldwide. This is a difficult book to find. Because it ... morewas only reprinted once, in 1920, as a"Golden Age" illustrated children's book. Octavo. 7-1/2" x 5" 4] + xi + 363pp + 4pp ads +[4] Bound in plum cloth. With titles& designs to spine in gilt. Illustrated with fanciful engravings throughout the text. CONTENTS: Perlino(A Neapolitan tale) Yvon and Finette(A tale of Brittany) The Castle of Life/ Destiny(A Dalmatian tale) The Twelve Months(A Bohemian tale) Sswanda. The Piper(A Bohemian tale) The Gold Bread(A Hungarian tale) The Story of the Noses(A Bohemian tale) The Three Citrons(A Neapolitan tale) The Story of Coquerico(A Spanish tale) King Bizarre and Prince Charming; or. The Art of Governing Men(A tale of all nations) Abdallah; or. The Four-Leaved Clover(an Arabian tale) CONDITION: Binding is solid. NO loose pages or starting signatures; inner joints unsplit! Uniform pale edgetoning throughout; but NO foxing! Pp 161-165 show traces of an old& likely accidental dog-earing. As mentioned above, small neat gift inscription to front free endpaper. COVERS are VERY clean as far as scuffs or damage are concerned; but we do see faint mottlings and rubs to the plum color. TIPS show wear to the cardboard. SPINE

Octavo. 9" x 5-1/2" 239pp. Originally issued by the publisher in green paper wraps. This copy b ound long ago in golden sheepskin. Or"law leather" as it's often been called. Unfortunately, sheep is not the best quality leather for binding. Scott's efforts to free himself go back as early as ... more1843, when his master died; Scott was living in Missouri. An anti-slavery state. He offered the master's widow the modern equivalent of some $7000.00( for his freedom but to no avail.so in 1846-7 he sued in court. The judgement went against him, but a retrial was called for. In 1850, a Missouri court upheld his case; the widow appealed. In 1852 the Missouri Supreme Court struck down that ruling. Scott tried again in federal court, but was struck down again. At that point, Scott appealed to the federal Supreme Court ~ again, to no avail. The Court's ruling was based upon the notion that, essentially, NO non-white person could be recognized as a citizen of the United States to begin with; consequently. Scott had no legal standing to bring suit in federal court in the first place! Moreover, slaves were considered private property, as such, granting Scott his freedom would involve violating the master's rights, depriving him of property without"due process" It gets more complicated ~ the Ordinance of 1787 regarding US-held territories was involved, and the Missouri Compromise of 1820 got thrown out the window.it was concluded that Congress hadn't the right

Rising up to just touch the"E" in"Edgar" running across the spine at the 1/3 level, dropping off steeply on rear cover to 1" from bottom, then running across the bottom of rear cover to 1" from the bottom rear tip. I have included a close-up shot of both the rear cover& spine, and the bottom of the rear endpapers, which show VERY light influence of damping. Winning bidder gets FREE SHIPPING in USA! Anthony Hope: The Prisoner of Zenda: 1st US Edn 1894 in NICE Condition!
Hope. Anthony: The Prisoner of Zenda. Being the History of Three Months in the Life of an English Gentleman. New York: Henry Holt& Co. 1894; first edition. Royal 16mo. 6-1/2" x 3-3/4" 226pp + 1p ads. Bound in tan buckram, with titles& design of owl with the HH&C logo to cover in crimson; top edge gilt. Other edges untrimmed. Text printed on laid paper. With a b&w frontispiece by Wechsler. SCARCE in this condition: This book is notorious for poor production values ~ the buckram was very acidic. And can tone to a deep, almost brown color. The red titles& design just don't show up well. The frontis tissue guard is acidic, toning the title-page. We've never seen a copy without these issues to one extent or another. Hope's classic work, which has been made into at least 4 films! The Prisoner of Zenda" ... morewas the first of what became known as"Ruritanian Romances" In which the protagonist takes on a dual role, usually for intriguing political purposes. In this case, our hero takes the place of the King of Ruritania, who has been drugged by his brother in a plot to take over the throne. Hope's sequel, Rupert of Hentzau" was also very popular; and George Barr McCutcheon's tales of Graustark carried on the tradition. Condition. Continued ~ The binding is firm; the text is clean with NO foxing; we see a mere trace of fore-edge toning. Endpapers are clean. With a small penned owner's name; the inner joints are intact, but we do see a split just starting at the bottom of the front inner joint. Covers are about as clean as one can ask for; we see one tiny fox-dot to the rear board, and a couple of dark marks to the front board, and a mark to the upper spine. The frontis tissue has toned, as usual, with a pale tone transferred to the title-page. Tips are still remarkably sharp! Spine shows only the faintest of rubs! DESPITE THE NITS. THE NICEST EXAMPLE OF THIS NOVEL WE'VE SEEN. Winning bidder please add $2.50 shipping in USA. Canada& overseas extra;

The narrowness of the spine, with the title so far to the right, makes me wonder if this DJ isn't from a later printing.but there's a tiny tan dot on the DJ spine that corresponds to a very faint dot on the book's spine, which leads me to believe these two pieces have been paired with each other a very long time. With 4 illustrations by the Master. J. Allen St. John. Thrilling adventures on an unknown South Pacific island. Swarming with Mesozoic monsters ... moreand sub-human races! VERY. VERY RARE in this state of preservation. From my personal collection. CONDITION. Continued: Binding is tight.
