The shop owner and artist signed the painting. Kristos Solomon 2004. The oil painting was a work in progress when we first viewed it. So we returned later to buy it. Although I do not believe that Ato Solomon is a very well known artist, his grandfather was quite respected and we own a few of his paintings on skin. This style of painting is very traditional. And but it’s rare to see a newer piece like this so very well executed. The colors are vibrant and the details marvelous! I hate to part with it. But it’s been rolled up and carefully stored for the last 9 years– it needs a large display area that will do it justice! A gorgeous example of Ethiopian art.

In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. This is for a 5 volume set of THE BIBLE STORY 1906. The King-Richardson Company Springfield. Massachusetts. Arranged and Edited By Rev. Newton Marshall Hall, D.D. And Rev. Irving Francis Wood, PH.D. These 5 volumes are in amazing condition. These have been packed away for years and look like they have never been opened and read. The pages are all extremely clean with no rips, tears missing parts or pieces. These have like library cards in the front but have never been checked out. There is a name on the top of each corner on the inside front cover, Jay Williams Walla Walla Washington First Presbyterian Church. There is also a name in 4 of these in very light pencil, I believe it is Minerva Haley and then the date of 1913. 350 illustrations in these 5 volumes. Volume 1 is THE GOLDEN BOOK, 507 pages. Volume II is THE HERO TALES, 508 pages. ... moreVolume III us TALES OF OLD JUDEA, 509 pages. Volume IV THE LIFE OF CHRIST, 508 pages. Voloume V Songs OF THE Ages, 508 pages. The only damage on these books is very minor scuffing on the very corners, please see photos. I think these are in excellent condition but I am not that familiar with how books are rated. Very hard to find in a set. Pages are slightly yellowed and delicate. But it also seems this was the intention of the publisher. Most of the books appear to be never or hardly read. A few of them have bends or small pieces missing from edges due to the delicacy, but does not interfere with the overall book.
