Up for auction we have a unique collection of 31 Little Leather Library Corporation. New York. I purchased these small books back in the 1980's at an auction here in West PA. The books were in the solid cedar box which is pictured in the photos and comes with the books, there is also a small lock in the cedar box but no key. Also one of the feet is missing from the bottom of the cedar box. These books are in very good condition, yes there are a couple of books that show some scuffing. The cover bindings appear to be leather but I do believe that the bindings are of some sort of a leatherette material but they smell like leather! For whatever reason this book publisher did not apply a copyright date in these books but I would hazard a guess to say that this collection is from the early 1900's. Also when the publisher printed these ... morebooks there was excess binding on the covers. My photos are not the best for these books due to the reflectivity of the book surfaces but the books are a very nice deep chocolate brown in color. This soft bound faux"leather" book is the Redcroft Edition. Published in 1920-1924. There's only some minor age appropriate wear to cover& yellowing to the pages(see photos) This measures approx. 4" x 3.25" wide. Filled with lovely poems from a by-gone-era, all pages are completely legible. Many other Redcroft Editions of miniatures available. The Little Leather Library Corporation of New York was the first company to mass-market inexpensive books in the United States. The corporation. Dante's Inferno Vol. 1 and Vol.2 Little Leather Library
Up for auction we have a unique find of Dante's Inferno from Little Leather Library Corporation. New York. The cover bindings appear to be leather but I do believe that the bindings are of some sort of a leatherette material but they smell like leather! For whatever reason this book publisher did not apply a copyright date in these books but I would hazard a guess to say that this collection is from the early 1900's. Also when the publisher printed these books there was excess binding on the covers. My photos are not the best for these books due to the reflectivity of the book surfaces but the books are a very nice deep chocolate brown in color. The Sidewalks of New York" was a special edition from 1923 for the Bowman Hotels presented as a guide for visitors to The Biltmore& other reknowned hotels(see picture) It is 3" x 4" the cover has japped edges. Curling down at the edges to protect the pages within. It has numerous illustrations of old New York landmarks. All the pages are perfect. A couple of the pictures seem to be a different color- they were taken at a later time when the light and the background were different. The pages that look light are not quite that light. And the couple that seem yellow are not that yellow. I'm not a very good photographer. All the pages are the same, somewhere in between- slightly yellowed with age. Poems" by Robert Burns, does have an issue, but not with the cover, which is in very nice condition- not brittle, very little wear- and the binding is secure. Inside the pages are also not brittle or marred, nothing loose. The issue is a water stain at the top of the first page which reaches through many of the following pages, although to an increasingly lesser degree- the stain doesn't reach all the way through the pages, but there it is. The pages are bound together just fine, but the whole has become separated from the cover at the binding- not unusual- think they must have used a cheap glue. Anyway, there it is.
