A Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents is a 20 volume work containing all Presidential messages. Papers, addresses, communications, and proclamations to Congress, beginning with George Washington and ending with Woodrow Wilson. However, as compiler James D. Richardson points out in his prefatory note at the beginning of the first volume, these Presidential communications ... moredo not include"those nominating persons to office and those which simply transmit treaties, and reports of heads of Departments which contain no recommendation from the Executive. v) The first 18 volumes are made up of these Presidential messages, while the final two volumes consist of a thorough encyclopedic and biographic index supplement to the rest of the series. The set is organized in the chronological order of the Presidents and their communications within their respective presidency. At the beginning of each President's section, there is a portrait of his estate and himself, which is followed by a short opinion statement concerning his life and contribution to American history and society. After this statement, a picture and mini-biography of his wife is included, followed by a quick biography of the President, himself. Very rare compilation of the“Messages and Papers” of the Presidents of the United States prior to 1912. There is also a small blue book that contains the“Certificate of the Owner” so all documents that came with this complete set are in order. These books tell when Presidents from George Washington to William Taft were inaugurated and also the speeches that made them famous. There are a few pictures of these Presidents in these books. They tell about different proclamations. Different dates, wars, land treaties, and other special message's set at that time. Messages and Papers of the Presidents, leather bound 16 of 20 books, gilt edges
These leather bound books were published by the Bureau of National Literature by an act of the 52nd Congress. Which dates them to the late 1800s. They have gilt edges. Most show wear consistent with age. There is a name. George Simpson, written in several. I see no other marks. Photos should show issues some have with the spine. Binds seem tight in most editions. Missing are volumes 7. 8, 11, and 17. There is a water mark line that runs across the top of pages in most of the books. I have taken several example photos. Volume 5 has water damage. It is probably the book that is in the roughest shape. The spine of the last volume. 20, which is also the index shows the most damage. The covers of these two particular volumes are in the last photo. Most books are probably fair to good. Media mail shipping is free in the lower 48.

Special messages, and inauguration speeches from several presidents throughout United States history. There are ten numbered volumes each covering a set of presidents between the years of 1787 and 1902 and an eleventh index volume. It was copyrighted in 1897, by James D. Richardson, a representative from the state of Tennessee, and was published in 1911, by the Bureau of National Literature and Art. There is also a supplement version that covers individual presidents in depth and was published, also by the Bureau of National Literature, but in 1917. A typical volume has the Seal of the President emblazoned in the front and the ... moreback. The original first edition was printed in 1899 by the Government Printing office in Washington DC. Only 6,000 copies were printed and presented to members of the congress and senate for reference. Two thousand for the use of the senate and four thousand for the use of Congress. 1911 was the third printing and contained 20 volumes. There was no volume eleven in the first printing. Offered for sale is this complete 10 volume book set titled. A COMPILATION OF THE MESSAGES AND PAPERS OF THE PRESIDENTS 1789-1897 by James D. Richardson in good to very good overall condition. They have a 1900 title page date along with an 1897 copyright page date. Volume one has a really attractive bookplate under the front cover from the Distributor that reads, Special allotment for Carthage N.Y. MESSAGES& PAPERS OF THE PRESIDENTS This is copy No, 4 SUBSCRIBED FOR BY John N. Koburn Committee on Distribution W. F. Hallan General Secretary" The original paper titled"NOTICE HOW TO OPEN A BOOK" that came with the books is also included. The books have decorative marble end pages and one quarter leather hardcovers with gilded lettering and designs on the spines making this set a rather attractive one that would look great ... moreon on any bookcase! The volumes are well illustrated with beautiful engravings of the Presidents. The pages are very tight to the spines and have light yellowing and light foxing. The leather hardcovers have wear on the edges with light scuffing as to be expected. The leather on the spines is dry and"flaking" as is often the case with books of this age. Some of the volumes have partial splits on the spine seam of the hardcovers, but all still have good hinges and open and close just fine. The gilded lettering and designs on the spines has wear and fading giving this set a great"antique" look! The books measure about 10" by 7" and average about 550 pages per volume. This set was published by the AUTHORITY OF CONGRESS as seen on the title page. The top of the pages on each volume have gold edges. I purchased this set at an estate auction in the Finger Lakes Region of NY State several years ago and they have been in my collection ever since.
