1881 BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA THEODORE JASPER PLATE XXXIII THE AMERICAN BITTERN BOTAURUS LENTIGINOSUS This rare chromolithograph plate is from the 1881 edition of: JACOB HENRY STUDER’S POPULAR ORNITHOLOGY. THE BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA DRAWN AND COLORED FROM NATURE BY THEODORE JASPER, A. M. M. D.EDITED AND PUBLISHED BY JACOB H STUDER& CO. TRIBUNE BUILDING NEW YORK CITY AND COLUMBUS, OHIO The book was found in a box lot at an estate sale in Versailles. KY. It was a gift from Mrs. H. H. Gratz of Lexington. KY to the previous owner in 1889. The book had no back and the gilded cover was half destroyed. However the interior plates were in near mint condition, with protective tissue pages and heavy gilt on the page edges. Since it was beyond repair as an antique book. I carefully removed the individual plates and retained the left side of the page ... morewith the original binding holes intact. We are offering the individual chromolithographs for their artistic. Historic, and decorative value. Folio size each plate app: 14 ½ x 11 ¼ inches Condition: excellent. Colors bright, fresh, and crisp. There are some individual plates with fingerprints and smudges(please examine the photos/scans) that will need to be removed. But overall the plates are in remarkable condition. I have included a photo/scan of this book’s original front cover. Title page, and dedication that you may print for your records. Many of the plates contain several different birds that you can identify by researching the publisher’s comments for each individual plate in the digital version of the later 1903 edition at wisc.edu– look for Studer.
