This small book measuring approximately 4" x 6" Condition: This leather-bound book and its 267 pages is in acceptable condition. The paper is still supple and pliant, there is modest toning, and as seen in scans- there is scattered light foxing throughout. The book came to us with the front cover detached, we have reattached it using acid free acrylic cement as a bonding agent and cloth library tape. The bindings are still in very good condition, the rear hinge is still intact. The leather covers and spine show wear from rubbing, bumping, soiling, etc. all of which is well represented in scans above.

It is a gold printed edition that is bound in red linen. The pages are cut uneven. measures 20 x 14 cm 191 pages. Condition: from outside the book is in very good to good condition with some grey spots on front and back and light wear at the backspine. From inside it is in very good condition. Great edition of this well liked book of both The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and The Spectre Bridegroom. No writing or doodles in the book. This is a soft cover book. Front cover is detached from the book. The book was written by Washington Irving and W. M. Odie. J Duthie and Richardson. It was published by the J P Lippincott Company of Philadelphia, PA. The book is not in very good condition. Some torn pages. But still all there. No doodling or pencil or ink marks. Just the name of previous owners noted on first inside page. Great illustrations ... morethroughout the book. Small article in the book about Darley whom did illustrations in many classic books, not in this one. The book is 8-3/16" tall. By 6.25" across. 1860 SCARCE Book LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON 5 Vol in 1 Washington Irving 1st Ed
Offered for sale is this rare antique book titled LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON authored by Washington Irving in fair to good overall condition. It was published by George P. Putnam out of New York and has matching title page and copyright page dates of 1860 and I believe this is a rare first edition publication in this format as all 5 volumes are in this book! It is very well illustrated with engravings throughout that are just incredible. I purchased this book years ago and it came out of my own collection of American History books. The book measures about 10 1/2" by 7" and is about 3" thick. It has 821 pages and with the scuffing and the wear on edges. The book has a great old look to it! It does have some condition issues as to be expected with a book this old and large. The front leather hardcover has a partial split along ... morethe spine seam as I tried to show in the last photo making the hinge a little weaker, but it still opens and closes fine. There is some foxing on the first few pages but as you move farther into the book, the foxing is greatly reduced and the pages still are fairly bright. There is one loosening engraving that is still connected barely. The book was signed by 2 previous owners and one of them, John H. Rerick, also signed the book and added his ink stamped name to it. There was a Doctor John H. Rerick that I found in a search that served during the Civil War for the 44th Regiment Indiana Volunteers Infantry that was a rather famous individual as he was also the Editor and Proprietor of the LaGrange Standard for a period of 40 years. I do not know if this is the same man and it would take more research to find out. The gilded lettering on the spine still has an attractive look to it and the book has colored page edges. Washington Irving’s Life of George Washington(published in five volumes in 1856–59) was the product of his last years and remains his most personal work. Christened with the name of the great general. Irving was blessed by Washington while still a boy of seven, and later came to know many of the prominent figures of the Revolution.
