ANTIQUE FDNY LEDGER Handwritten Book/Vintage Firefighting/NYC Fire Dept. 1800s
FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT LEDGER. This amazing volume was compiled by Hook& Ladder Company No. 19 which at the time operated from Ogden Avenue in the Bronx section of New York City. The location where it was originally organized. Entries run from May 6th through August 15th, 1887, and cover day-to-day activities of the firehouse in fascinating detail. Massive folio contains some 500 numbered pages. Each chock full of handwritten entries including fire calls and alarms, ambulance calls, roll calls, company drills, meal breaks, caring and exercising of the horses, trips to the blacksmith shop, equipment maintenance, supply purchases, etc. This is one of those vintage gems which should be seen to be fully appreciated. A truly remarkable time capsule from a bygone era of NYC firefighting. The New York ... moreCity Fire Department traces its origins back to 1648 when the first fire ordinance was adopted in what then was the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. Hooks. Ladders and buckets were financed through the collection of fines for dirty chimneys and a fire watch was established consisting of eight wardens which were drawn from the male population. An organization known as the"prowlers" but given the nickname"the rattle watch" patrolled the streets with buckets, ladders and hooks from nine in the evening until dawn looking for fires. Leather shoe buckets, 250 in all, were manufactured by local Dutch shoemakers in 1658, and these"bucket brigades" are regarded as the beginning of the New York Fire Department. In 1664 New Amsterdam became a British settlement and was renamed New York. The first New York fire brigade entered service in 1731 equipped with two hand-drawn pumpers which had been transported from London. England. These two pumpers formed Engine Company 1 and Engine Company 2. These were the first fire engines to be used in the American colonies, and all able-bodied citizens were required to respond to a fire alarm and to participate in the exting

Two Antique Handwritten Pen and Ink Books Journals Dated 1814 and 1818 English
One book is 9" by 7 1/2" The other is 9 1/2" by 7 1/2" The plain brown book has" Miscellaneous Extracts" on the inside cover dated 1818. This one has the water stains. Both have outside cover paper loss due to some type of"nibbling" over the years. It is 1 1/8" thick. The thinner book has a hand painted design on the front and back cover. It only has one page(the last page that is the Index) that has a piece missing. I haven't read these entirely, but it seems to be just what they wrote on the inside; miscellaneous writings and quotes and poems and thoughts. 336.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B%3Dd70f%2B%3E336-13f756a9096-0x106-

Antique Handwritten Diary of Civil War Colonel - Coded Masonic Memory Jogger
I'm going to start out by saying this is a lengthy item to describe and do it justice so please bear with me. I believe this handwritten diary to be a very rare find. It was originally owned by a Civil War Colonel named Colonel John B Yates. It is written in a coded language and I have done a lot of research to determine what exactly this is. With the help of several professors we have determined it is a Masonic Memory Jogger. The Masons used many rituals and were expected to memorize them without having them written down where just anyone could see. By using the book"Illustrations of Masonry" by William Morgan 1827 I have been able to decipher bits and pieces of what this says. There is still a lot to be deciphered which I will leave to the curious mind who owns this gem after me. Colonel Yates served in Company A. Michigan ... moreEngineers and Mechanics. That regiment worked repairing bridges and railroads, building blockhouses and fortifications, having skirmishes with the enemy and taking part in the engagements of Bowling Green, Perryville, Stones River and on the march with Sherman's army, 1861-1865. Colonel Yates was from Albion, Michigan. One of his business cards was tucked in a pocket of the diary and there is a photo of this. Also tucked in a pocket was an invitation to a"Washington Ball" at the Union House, in Delhi Friday evening, Feb. 20, 1863 at 4 o'clock. I have a copy of Col. Yates death notice stating his birth date of Oct. 18, 1833, and his record of service during the Civil War. This was written by William T Sherman himself. A quote reads"Its journal of operation during the campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas would illustrate the absolute limit of man for physical labor. I have sometimes reproached myself for cruelty in imposing or allowing to be imposed, on it such hard and constant labor, and now desire to indorse the paper with an emphasis that will show that I was conscious of the fact. I will be much pleased if Col. Yates can be suitably rewarded for his pa

Antique 1907 Handwritten Diary: Ithaca NY Young Lady Ella Rider, Victorian Life
Antique 1907 Handwritten Diary: Ithaca NY Young Lady Ella Rider. Victorian Life Description. Offered here is the 1907 diary of a young lady from Ithaca. N.Y. I haven't read the whole diary. But did peek in enough to get the gist of her story. The author wrote a half to a full-page daily. Her handwriting very easy to read. At this point. We believe she was Ella Rider. I have 14 more of what may be this woman's diaries up through 1961. Only the 1907 diary is being auctioned here, but if you're interested in the lot, let me know and I can place the rest of them on eBay as a bulk buy. I also have 16 other vintage diaries that apparenlty belonged to Ella's sister Hazel Rider Daly. I will be offering these singly or as a lot soon. Let me know if you have a preference on how they're sold. Hazel was originally from Ithaca but ... morelater moved to Cortland. Hazel's diaries run from 1913 thru 1959. At this point I'm confused over who wrote some of the diaries in these two lots. We know which 16 are definitely Hazel's because she signed them. The others are unsigned and could be either sister. Though there are two 1913s and two 1932s. indicating at least two writers for those years. But back to what we're going to call Ella's 1907 diary. While in Ithaca she worked in a store. And probably lived with her parents. She had a large circle of girlfriends. And male friends appear fairly regularly to walk her home. A particular fellow"stayed until nearly one. Then he said he wouldn't go until I had kissed him goodnight. So I did(not) Ella is active in several churches. Their choirs and youth groups, and she and her girlfriends attend several times per week. She especially enjoys having girlfriends spend the night. Or spending nights at their homes, and writes of being very disappointed when they don't always accept her invitations. She sews. Including working on a long kimono, and occasionally goes to a sewing bee. She notes riding her bicycle a few times, listening to the Graphaphone
7 Antique Handwritten Diaries: Charles Felt, Norwich NY, Farmer Logger 1883-1915
7 Antique Handwritten Diaries: Charles Felt. Norwich NY, Farmer Logger 1883-1915 Description. 7 Antique Handwritten Diaries: Charles Felt. Norwich NY, Farmer Logger 1883-1915 Description Offered here is this unique lot of seven antique handwritten diaries penned by Charles Felt of Norwich. N.Y. between the years 1883 and 1915. I have read none of them. Years here are 1883. 1886, 1892, 1896, 1898, 1906, and 1915. Felt. Like many men living in the rural countryside at this time, was a farmer, logger, and jack of many other trades. He sometimes worked by himself, and other times hired out to others, either for pay or in a trade of hours. While his handwriting is easy enough to read. His entries are often short- just a line or a sentence on many days. Research I've done would appear to indicate his eventual in-laws were members of the King ... morefamily- perhaps Mr. and Mrs. G.H. King. In fact. I have another dairy written by Matie King in Norwich in 1882 that I will be auctioning later. I purchased all of these in the same place at the same time. There are lots of local and family names in the diaries. As Felt visited those in his community regularly and mentions them by name. I've glanced in the diaries and see that he worked in a mill. Worked on the telephone line, dug a basement, and picked and pressed hops, just to mention a few of his involvements. There are period receipts from local businesses in some of the diaries' pockets. One photo here shows just the receipts found in the 1915 dairy alone. In the back of some of the diaries is a list of his expenses. Interesting to see what cost what back in those days. So here's a one-of-a-kind look back into the past at Norwich. Oxford and the surrounding area and what life was like then. Don't let this collection get away as it is no-doubt a treasure for a local historian. In fact, these should be at the local historical society, in a public library or at least in the hands of someone who would appreciate them. Maybe you could donate them? OUR INVENTORY N

COLEMAN/DALY/STEWART/HILLS NYC 1888 Antique Estate Executor Journal Handwritten
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Up for bid is an accounting book that belonged to Thomas E Stewart who was the executor of the estate of Elizabeth Coleman. Most of the book is devoted to showing to whom her money went but this book also shows that he was the executor for others who were involved with Elizabeth Coleman such as Daniel Daly who purchased 76 Oliver Street in New York City and died October 13 1889. I believe that 76 Oliver Street was a boarding house that may have been involved with Elizabeth’s Estate. There is also entries for“Committee of James S Hills” and where his money was disbursed. It appears there is a connection to Coleman. Thomas E Stewart’s wife(Harriett Stewart) may also have been somehow related to Elizabeth. Thomas Stewart was an attorney and US. Representative in New York. It looks like Elizabeth ... morewas quite wealthy in 1888, having over $17,000 to leave to assorted people, most receiving approximately $400 if I am reading this correctly. There are three children with the last name Powers(Margaret Mary. Francis and James Coleman) who each received $400, but since they were minors there father Michael F Powers“Father and General Guardian” received the money. Last names of some of the heirs. McCaffray, Dougherty, Heany, Eagan, Hickey, Hills, Powers, Pierce. The book is about 200 pages, the first 100 belonged to Stewart, later a man used the last 100 pages to keep records of his furniture repair business. There are pages with no writing, some pages are missing(mostly in the back where furniture info is) I only wish I knew who Elizabeth Coleman was! I am always happy to email additional pictures to you. I will invoice you within 24 hours of the close of auction. PLEASE SEE PICTURES and Email me with any questions before bidding Thanks for looking and good luck! Shipping: I ship to the USA only. Payment Instructions: Payment must be received within 5 days of close of auction.

Antique Handwritten School Books/Botany/Plant Analysis/Womelsdorf/Rhoads Family
A lot of seven antique handwritten schoolbooks. Circa 1903-04. These books were my grandmother's, who spent several years in the Bethany Orphan's Home in Womelsdorf, Pa. in the early 1900's. I thought that they might be of interest not only to the collector of old writings, but to those interested in Wolmesdorf, Bethany Orphan's Home, or the genealogy of the Rhoads family. Antique Handwritten Hardcover General Store Ledger Northwestern Pa. 1828-1831
Up for auction is this hand written general store ledger from northwestern Pa. It is all in the Meadville. Pennsylvania area. It starts in June 1828 to August 1831. It has Day Book stamped on the side& a big A stamped on the front cover. It has so many famous names in it& I have not turned every page because it is very fragile. The pages I did turn had these names.John& Mary Reynolds, Sarah Randolf, Ms. Baldwin, Dick Mede, Robert Mead, Soloman Lord, Caleb Perkins& Son. I know the spelling looks different but some of it is hard to read by the way the person wrote. It shows what they bought at the store& what they paid for it or if they charged it& paid later. It is really pretty interesting! Lots of information for the 3 year period. The book& its pages have had water damage& some rotting, but most of it is ... morestill able to read. The book measures 15 1/2" x 7" x 2 3/4" Please examine photos closely. Thanks for looking!
Antique 1900 Handwritten Journal DIARY Full Bloomsburg University G.E. Elwell PA
Elwell family that has building on campus of Bloomsburg University named after* This is an antique handwritten diary from 1900. It was G. Edward Elwell from Bloomsburg. Pennsylvania. Lists Geo. E. Elwell as person to contact in case of accident or serious illness. Sounds like he was a child of maybe 10 or 11. Listed as 4' 11" and 74 lbs. Diary has an entry for every day in 1900. Also includes memoranda with recipes, list of Christmas presents and other info. It lists Christmas presents from 1899, so I am guessing this may have been a present as well. Also has cash account info with cash on hand and monies spent on various items such as soda water, fudge, hot soda, postage, etc. Upon some research I think this may be the diary of the youngest of the Elwell family in which Bloomsburg University has a building(Elwell Hall) named after. ... moreOn the Bloomsburg University page I found this: Elwell Residence Hall. Completed in 1968, is a nine-story facility that houses 700 men and women. The 149,578-square-foot building is named for three generations of the Elwell family, the younger two of whom graduated from Bloomsburg and later returned to teach. Judge William Elwell served as trustee from 1868 to 1887 and president of the governing board for several years. His son, George E. Elwell, was one of the first graduates of the institution and succeeded his father on the Council of Trustees in 1887, continuing until 1906. George's son, G. Edward Elwell, taught foreign languages at Bloomsburg" Is this the youngest Elwell's diary from 1900? One entry is as follows: Monday April 2. 1900. 50 degrees weather: C. Cl, R(there is a list in the back in the memoranda of weather abbreviations) Got up at 8:30. Went up street. Came home and mixed juice for water ice. S. came. Went up town. Played ball. Made fudge. Played chess. Went to ice plant. S came. Miss Wallace spent the afternoon. Mamma went to Uncle Charlie's funeral. Studied all evening. I believe it is leather bound. it measures approx. 4 7/8" x 3 1/8

225pc Vintage Antique Ephemera Lot Handwritten Diaries Books Photos Worlds Fair
First off disregard any yellow or pink line running through the photos above as it is just from my scanner. There are a total of 225+ vintage pieces of ephemera in this lot. Way too many items for me to describe separately. The pieces range in date from the mid 1800’s to the mid 1900’s. But in a nut shell some of the pieces are as follows… A handwritten guest book from the 1930's. Several early 1900's photos, more postcards, New York World's Fair fold-out postcard souvenir, dance cards, Victorian valentine, college brochures, wedding announcements, newspaper clippings, handwritten documents, and more. Three of the tubes you see are those early 1900’s panoramic postcards with the postcards inside. I believe the postcards are of Germany. I only unrolled one and scanned as much of it as I could but it’s so big the whole thing wouldn’t ... morefit on my scanner. There are handwritten letters. Photos, a dr. journal with just a few entries, a book about Shirley Temple and on the inside it says, To Adrianna From Shirley” but I have no idea if it is Shirley Temples actually signature. Then a Zion’s Day Star newspaper from 1883, some larger photos that actually might be movie stills, Octagon soap wrappers, 1927 Brunswick Records catalogue, directories and so much more. Please ask any questions before bidding as this is a buy as is auction. No returns. A great group for any collector or for. There are several handwritten diaries in this lot. One is an 1893 diary full of handwritten entries but I have not read it. There is no cover and the binding is spilt. June 6 th through the 12(only six pages) have a burn mark on them. Not even sure where this man is from. Then there is a 1946 diary also full of writing but some just a line or two. Some full paragraphs. This one is in good shape. Then the two civil war era diaries but they are more or less expense ledgers and notes, not diary entries. They are from 1862-1864 or thereabouts. Covers are in poor shape. They are from Wyoming Co. New York. Both are full and between them

ANTIQUE STORE/FARM LEDGER Napa Valley & Nipomo CA 1880 HANDWRITTEN Account Book
ANTIQUE HANDWRITTEN LEDGER This old ledger was found at a Santa Maria. CA estate sale. It has 190+ pages full of handwritten entries. It appears to be a combination of a ledger for a store, hotel, farm, and household expenses. There is a lot of mention of Napa Valley and Nipomo, CA. I believe the owner of this book had a farm(grew apricots, blueberries, and peaches. and had boarders who also ate at their home. there are lists of people who stayed and how many nights and number of meals. The first date I see is 1880. Inside the cover. It is signed W.H. Grigsby, Nipomo. Jan. 1894 S.L.O. Co. California. The next page is signed Will Grigsby"For the year of 1880 Day Book" and"William H. Grigsby, Napa, Calif. Napa Soda Springs" The next page apeears to be a list of names with page number(presumably a contents index to certain ... moreaccounts) The last date I see is 1916. Some other clues to owner: Moved to Soda Canon Road(Napa) Nov. 1887.to SLO June 10. 1891.Nipomo Dec. 14, 1891. Some Nipomo names that I see as boarders and expenses: Will Dana. Dave Castro, Joe Dominguez. Some accounts listed(Napa? McClelland& Co. John Sandercock, the Bank of Napa, Whitman, Cain& Mitchell(S.F. 1886) W.E. Tufts, R.H. Barkway, A.D. Porter, Gimmel& Co. J. Garvin, Moody(Napa City) It looks like in the early 1900s- there are a lot of farming expenses mentioned. Mostly regarding growing apricots, peaches and blackberries. There is a page called"China Labor" and it details how many men they hired each day and their pay. There are also many pages with farm expenses and household expenses. Book is in worn condition. But is still solidly bound. A few torn pages, but appears to be complete. Powered by The free listing tool. List your items fast and easy and manage your active items.

Hello and Welcome to Our Auction. You are looking at an antique hand written diary or journal written by a member of the Allison Family from High Hill in Muskingum County Ohio. It is from the years 1886-1890. I didn't read the entire journal. But browsed through it a little. They write of what they ate that day, had for dinner, who visited, the weather, family matters, things that they have bought and sold, church and neighbors and community members and events. It measures 8 3/8" x 6 7/8" The ink on the first page is faded and very hard to read. These are what look to be quotes from books, etc, not journal entries. Antique Handwritten General Store Ledger Book 1877 Northeast Ohio Daily Entries
Here is an antique handwritten general store ledger from 1877. This is a hardcover book with 419 pages. This is missing the first few pages. As it starts on page 9, and goes up to page 427. Every page is filled in, with entries nearly everyday. This is divided by months, some of the writing is illegible. There is some all over wear throughout. Binding is tight. Wear to the inside covers. Also, when you touch the cover, something ends up on your hands. Not sure if its dirt or the finish of the cover coming off. The outside binding has damage as well. Please see all of the photos above. This measures nearly 15 inches tall, over 7 inches wide, and 1 1/4 inches thick. This came from an estate in Northeast Ohio a few years ago, and has been in my collection ever since. Not sure what store it was from, the family said the book belonged to their ... moreuncle, but the origins are unknown. USA shipping only on this item due to weight.
