1914 Handwritten Personal & Travel Diary - Italy on the "Adriatic", house robbed
This is a diary written by an unknown wealthy woman from Youngstown. Oh. Part of the diary is devoted to two trips, one to Italy via the"Adriatic" the other a summer vacation on the shores of Lake Michigan. On the trip to Italy, she is accompanied by a young girl, Emily, and also someone she calls M.E. From reading the diary. It appears that the author had two children, Imogene and William. Imogene attended Mt Holyoke, and William attended Dartmouth. On her return from Europe, she visited both children for a few days at their schools. The diary begins on Jan 1, 1914 and the first week the entries are about the author's preparations to leave on her trip. On Jan 10, she got underway: Jan 10.Came on board the"Adriatic" White Star Line, about ten AM. Found our stateroom, fixed our things. Will and Imogene came to see us ... moreoff. Sailed at 12 noon. Emma Peck sent a box of flowers. Jan 13.Ship rolling worse than ever. Water frequently dashing up over the porthole. Swept over upper promenade deck. Drenching several people. Had lunch and dinner on deck. Had a hot salt water bath before going to bed. Jan 15.All have felt pretty well today. Wrote to Imogene and to Frank& Elizabeth. This morning we saw a full-rigged sailing vessel. Three tall masts with all sails set. It was beautiful. Spoke to Helen Wilcox, Caroline Huggins friend, after dinner. The author spent the next three months traveling through Italy. She wrote daily in the diary about all the sights she saw. A few were not on the itinerary: Jan 28.Emily did not feel very well. M.E. and I went out this am. And all went this afternoon. Saw a flying machine, going back and forth, over water and land and skimming along the water looking like a giant dragon-fly. April 30.Left Palermo about 8:30 last evening. Somewhat windy part of the day. Heard that there are about 300 immigrants on board. The"Cretic" is one of the ships that went to the assistance of the"Messina" at the time of the earthquake in 1908. After arriving back in

There is great description of the trip and the places they visited including several times talking about run-ins with Indians or avoiding Indians and one of a battle between soldiers and Indians near Fort Dodge. It is from 1878 and covers several months journey. It is in good condition and done by Lilley. It says in part: Left Osceola MO for Colorado May the 16 th 1878. Our party consisted of four in NO: N Lilley. Zach Lilley, Hugh Hecherd and WE Lilley, the first day we reached Appleton City…Thence we removed to Mr Jacob Gundy’s 3 miles South East of town and remained there until Monday 20… I saw ... morethe smoke from his campfire. I then remarked that I did not expect to see campers so near to our own tent. To which he replied in an unknown language or rather no tongue at all. I there smelt Big INgin and farther more saw the rings in his ears and some other weaving apparel peculiar to the Indian…I immediately notified the gentleman by a motion of the hand that distance would bring enchantment to the scene…I then made some other remark to which he replied in a gruff grunt and a sudden loss of the head by this time I had seen quite enough of Indian life for the time being and made the same known by gently waving the Red Skin off… Salma County is like most other Kansas RR towns in point of business. The streets were thronged with busy men and loaded wagon. I was not definitely informed as to its population. Some gave it as being 1500 while others claimed it for 3000. The buildings are substantial most of them being built of stone or brick. There public school building is one that would be a credit to any town in the state… Saw a Jack Rabbit during the day passed through Brooksville. A small town on the KPRR pitched our tent on a branch about 4 miles west of Brooksville. We are

1926 Handwritten Travel Journal Diary - Student Vacation in Europe -Over 300 pgs
This is a lengthy 1926 travel diary written by a 23 year old American woman who was studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She did not write her name in the diary. But it is obvious from her writing that she came from a fairly well-to-do family and was quite intelligent. In late March, the author and three of her friends crossed the channel to spend Easter vacation in continental Europe. The first part of the journal is about the author's daily life and social activities at the Royal Academy. She described a spiritualist meeting at the People's Palace at the University of London over which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle presided. There is a very lengthy description of a rugby game in which she noted that before the game. The band played"God Save the King" and the King went out onto the field and shook hands with all the ... moreplayers. The author wrote of the two suitors that she had at the time, and of going to see Lillian Davies with one of them. On March 29. The author and her friends began their Easter vacation. What I found unusual was that they crossed the English Channel by plane. There is an entry of several pages describing the crossing. In part she wrote: Mar 29.I read a notice on the front part of the plane explaining that wind currently might cause it to be a trifle unsteady and had visions of the machine rocking violently and myself being ill. I was not the least bit frightened and did not notice until later the sign telling how danger had been minimized.I did notice the size of the plane and estimated it roughly to be 15 ft by 5 ft. We were provided with wicker chairs and leather cushions but found later that it was necessary to wrap them around our feet to keep them warm. The plane landed near Amsterdam- Holland was the first country on the party's itinerary. On occasion. The author made some uncomplimentary comments about Jewish people. The first of these was in Holland, when she wrote about Rembrandts home: Mar 30.It is unfortunately in a rather poor section of the city t

This is a US Travel diary that represents four different trips taken by one woman in the 1930’s. Most of them have to do with her travels to the West Coast but one is to Washington D.C. She is either traveling by train or bus. Sometimes autos were taken to see the various sites when they reached their destination. She also was able to visit the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone Park. I don’t know her last name but the diary is to a“Jessie” from“Olive. There are a total of 135 handwritten pages and because there are so many I actually just sped read through the last part of the diary for times sake. Here are a few examples of her entries… 1932(She starts out leaving Painesville Ohio passing through Elyria. Oberlin, Toledo. Defiance. Marion. Anderson Indiana. Indianapolis. St. Louis, Effingham, Greenville, Kansas City, Salina Kansas and finally ... morereaching Denver where I start her quotes… June 14 th. Reached Denver Tuesday morning at 5:25. Had breakfast. Called Dr. Weaver and left at 7:30 Tues. A.M. Passed thru Pueblo, Trinidad, Colorado and over the Raton Pass, a most wonderful ride over the mountains down to Santa Fe where I wish I had stayed over. It was such an interesting place. We reached Albuquerque late Tuesday night where we were detained on account of tire trouble. Left here at 1:30 A.M. Here I left the young man from Mississippi who was on his way to the Philippines. The ride now for hours and hours was thru arid land. At Holbrook we saw petrified trees and at Winslow the Painted Desert. Which was very beautiful. Arrived at Flagstaff about noon Wednesday tired and dirty. Went with Miss Westman and Miss Bushman. Teachers from Chisholm Minn. to the“Ideal Hotel” where we had a hot bath and after resting for a time intended to go out to the Observatory but were so tired we just slept on until six. Thursday morning when we left there in a lovely Packard car and drove 85 miles to the Grand Canyon. On our way we saw one deer and immense fields of Purple Sage. 1922 Handwritten Travel Diary Journal - Wealthy Woman's 3 mo Tour of Europe
The author of this diary was Elizabeth(Betsy) Clifford of Duluth MN. She was 25 years old when she made the trip to Europe which she wrote about in this diary. Ms Clifford was from a wealthy family. Which is evidenced by the expensive hotels they stayed at, and the manner in which they traveled. The 1920 Census lists the author's residence as Los Angeles, Ca, although at the end of the trip she returned to Duluth. I have been unable to find out what the young woman did while in LA, but in the diary she lists several names under the heading"Hollywood Friends" She also wrote of a few people she ran into on the trip who worked at MGM or lived in Hollywood. Accompanied by her mother. Ms Clifford left Duluth on July 5, 1922 and traveled by train to Chicago. From there she and her mother traveled to Quebec where on July 11, they boarded ... morethe Empress of France for Europe. During the 7 day crossing, the author became involved with a young man, the first of many suitors and young men on this trip that she wrote about in the diary. During the next 3 months. Ms Clifford described in her diary the many sights she saw in England, Scotland, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Italy. She described the damage from the war in Belgium, and also wrote of the war in France: We drove through Verdun(a mass of ruins) Verdun Fort- then to Fort deVaux- went through it. Maj Renwald defended the fort for 3 days. Then finally surrendered to the Germans- carrier pigeons- 19 men went for water. Three returned. visited Ossuaire, built by the American Red Cross- the most touching scene of all. Even the eyes of the priest were filled with tears. Ms Clifford loved Paris and had quite the time there. Sightseeing, shopping and fashion shows, the nightlife and dancing. She and her mother went to the Folies Bergere, which her mother"didn't quite enjoy- too nude, no tops" The author also paid a visit to the famous"Dead Rat" nightclub. Of all the countries she visited, the author seemed to like Italy the least

1937 Travel Diary Lincoln NE to New Orleans Texas Mexico Colorado Photo Ephemera
This is a wonderful 1937 travel diary and scrapbook put together by a woman living in Nebraska(near Lincoln I believe) who takes a trip with three others and heads to New Orleans. Texas. Mexico. Colorado and back home. The diary consists of 126 pages with typed entries and tons of scrap including original photos. Postcards, brochures, maps and more. In fact on the very first page you can see a map showing the route traveled as she’s marked it. All of the pages were housed in a three ring binder but since they were numbered I decided to take them out as the rings on the binder were rusting and the pages were difficult to turn. I will include the binder with this auction. This journal would really be quiet beautiful with an archival binding. She doesn’t write her name but she does write this entry…Sunday May 9 th. And the 13 th Wedding anniversary ... moreof the Scrantons. Does that mean her last name is Scranton? Not quite sure but worth mentioning. Her detailed descriptions of the trip is fascinating. They spend a great deal of time in New Orleans and Mexico. Both of which she loves. She’s a fabulous writer as you will see in the following excerpts… 1937“Saturday May 8 th, Southward bound. New Orleans. Galveston. Old Mexico. The historic Southwest, where ever our fancy may lead us. Fifteen days of vacation and no forwarding address! Nothing can stop us now. What does it matter if there are a few light rain showers. They only freshen and brighten the beautiful green countryside. They take Route 71 to Kansas City and stay the night there. On to Bentonville Arkansas and Fayetteville Arkansas. An hour later and then Northern Louisiana and farming country. Cotton fields. Lots of Negroes, children and dogs. Women and children chop cotton; men cultivate with a single mule and all work slowly. Ida, the first town in La. Big cotton fields interspersed with Negro shanties, similar to shanties in Ark. Sharecroppers; stovepipes sticking out of windows, wooden window doors open in the daytime, no screens, and t

Two 1891 Handwritten Diaries, Chicago, 1 personal Diary,1 European Travel Diary
The bid is for two 1891 handwritten diaries. Unfortunately. No names were left in the diaries, but I believe the family lived in Chicago as the author wrote of shopping at Marshall Fields, of going to Kenosha etc. The mother and father appear to be middle aged, and have several young children. After reading both diaries, I came to the belief that both diaries were written by the mother, and that she often refers to herself in the third person as"Ma" and calls her husband"Pa" The handwriting in both diaries is similar, and both have the same misspelled words. Also, it's the only way some of it makes sense. The year started on a very bad note: Jan 1.This is the first day of the year and a sad one. Ma never remembers to have had so much trouble on New Years Day. Pa got some keys and entered the flat on Fletcher St.and ... morelooked at the damage done to the rooms. They are burned with lye. Ma was going to look at the basement when she saw Mrs Mahr. She had crawled through a window in the front. Mr Mahr came with a hammer and forced one door open. Ma called the patrol but they had left. Jan 2.Pa gets out a warrant for Mr Mahr.In the eve a constable came with a warrant to arrest me and Mrs McElliott(I think the McElliotts were boarders) We went later on to Judge Boggs. Mr Follebaur signed my bond and I signed. evidently. Mr Mahr pressed charges as well) We went to the doctor to get medicine to get sleep. I am worried and so sick. And the problems continue. Jan 3.Mr Hendricks called and don't want to have Ma's case come off next Monday.Mr McElliott swallowed some diamond dye. Ma got him to vomit. He is all right again. Mrs McE is very much frightened. The cases dragged on. Mr Mahr got a change of venue and so forth. When they finally appear in court. The author wrote(in part) Jan 19.Mrs. Mahr and the gang are there. The trial goes on and we all never heard such lies as were told. The husband was an inventor. Who patented some special types of cribs and beds. While workin
