There are some watermarks and a torn corner on the front cover page. The first four pages have bent top corners. The second page on both volumes has a name written in pencil. The back of the first engraving page has some scribbling. Volume 2 has the binding of the front cover coming loose. Some discoloring due to age. But no pages are bent or torn. Here is a great piece for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. Great 2 Volume Set of Books about Picturesque America. Put out in 1872. The set was credited with starting the Nationialism movement in the United States after the Civil War. The books were edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton& Co. of New York. Volume 1 was put out in 1872 and volume 2 in 1872. You bought the sections in each book and once you had paid for them in each volume, they were then bound for you. Slight dusty smell to the books, no mold or ... moremildew issues. The book is just packed with Steel and Wood Prints by"Eminent American Artists" Appears the book was owned by a George Rankey(paper label applied to first blank page in Vol. 1) at some juncture and then the Downingtown Free Library from ink stamps that are in the books. The books' pages do show some mild foxing/brown spotting in places. Very little in volume 1. First few pages of volume 2. The front cover of volume 2 is detached from the spine. The pages are still firmly bound together in the volumes and each book still has the finish on the spine. The covers do show some finish loss, but are all there. The books are titled Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In. A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of The Mountains. Rivers, Lakes, Forests, Waterfalls, Shores, Canons, Valleys, Cities, and Other Picturesque Features of Our Country. The illustrations inside are all steel and wood engravings and there are tons of great images and illustrations– really a great looking set. One says this is Volume II. And it looks like both books make up Volume II– one ends at page 152 and the other starts at page 153. Measure about 10" x 13" and in excellent condition with just minor wear.
