I have been in the business for 50 years -- this is the first time I have come across such a complete pharmacist or physician's recipe box for all types ... moreof drugs and cures. This journal is dating from 1826 and is entitled Formulae Medicamentorium A Compendium of the Modern Practical Physic 1826. This is bound in its original leather marbelized cardboard binding. This has an extraordinary amount of remedies, cures, and compounds of herbs. Also, there are cutouts from newspapers and periodicals posted here and there throughout the journal. There is everything from cough remedies upward. Practical recipes for waterproofing from boots to curing or treating diphtheria. One of the most interesting ledgers I have handled this entire time. We are selling this as we found it out of the estate. Invaluable information.

Victorian Handwritten Personal Journal of Carl Senn Ohio State University 1918
Here is a terrific little handwritten diary from 1918. Written by Carl M. Senn of Attica, Ohio. He worked in Columbus as an electrician, wiring many of the historical theaters downtown. He was instrumental in wiring many of the theatrical palaces of the time in Columbus. And was an Ohio State University Student. It measures 2.5" x 4.25" And is made of red leatherette with gold edged pages. Although his fountain pen did use a heavy ink. Causing a few blotches, the book itself is very legible. The binding is tight, but is starting to become dry at the exact center. This is shown in images. All pages are completely full on both sides, and are intact; no foxing, tears, creases, or odors are exhibited. Mr. Senn kept tabs on the daily weather. His trips into surrounding towns, and tells of the trials of being a new father. It's a ... moreone year diary. He took weekend trips back to his home town of Attica. And mentions lots of his friends and neighbors there by name. Questions and comments would sure be appreciated; I'll get back with you right away. US First Class p ostage is 2.50. Thanks for stopping by. And keep watching my page for more old paper. A note to international bidders: Rates from the US have soared within the past month. The postal service says that they have removed shipping by boat. It's all air mail now. And costs have become quite high. Let's check rates for you, and I'll get it to you safely and as economically as I can. Thanks.

Written down circa 1850-52 by a soldier named O. W. Gilman. Also contains a diary from 1855 written by 18-19 year old Hattie Gilman. The book is from the Gilman family, Buffalo, New York. Judging by the officers mentioned in the journal and the places where he marched and camped. Gilman served with the 10th Infantry. The book begins with a few poems by Harriet(Hattie" L. Gilman of Buffalo(her relation to O.W. unknown) and then records O.W. Gilman's ... moreexperiences beginning on May 8, 1847, when he sailed from Fort Hamilton, NY bound for Texas and Mexico. The journal section totals 20 handwritten pages. After that, Gilman has written"Journal lost, Song book commenced Nov. 15th, 1852. This is followed by handwritten lyrics to songs, each with O.W. Gilman's name below and dated 1852, followed by poems and then a daily diary during 1855 written by Hattie, who notes that she turned 19 on August 10. Since Gilman has written"Journal lost" after the 20th page, he most likely wrote his account into this book from his original journal within the few years after his return from the war. Preliminary research found no known publication. Gilman records the difficult conditions under which the troops marched and camped. The burning sands, scorching sun and lack of water. He gives numerous details of the places they march to in Mexico, incidents including a few men who are killed by unknown assassins or drown in the Rio Grande, the death of General Hopping, and in November the visit of General Zachary Taylor and his retinue to Gilman's camp(at the School of Instruction in Mier) 7.5 x 6.5" Very readable. 1871 Handwritten Ledger Journal Fredericksburg Grapetown TX Schaper Usener Store
I almost gave up on my research with this one but finally hit a gold mine of information concerning the families listed on the pages. The person I purchased this from said it came out of an Arizona estate so he figured it was a mercantile ledger from an Arizona town. So that actually took me on all kinds of wild goose chases. It’s not Arizona; it’s Texas. Before I get to how I discovered this information. I want to give you a brief description of the ledger itself. This 1870’s ledger contains about 290 handwritten“general store” type expense entries. Four pages have been torn out but otherwise all pages are accounted for. There are hundreds of names written on the pages and also the items they purchased. For example; Revolving pistols. Boots, blankets, material, jeans, candy, bottle of bitter, tobacco, box mustard powder, buggy whip, whiskey, ... morejugs, brandy, spices, axe handles, coffee, belts, combs, underskirt, gloves, stockings, earrings, nails, pocket book, and on and on and on. There were only two places that I saw listed in this ledger; Grape Creek and Palo Alto. On the first page at the top it says Schaper& Usener. At first I thought it was“Ussner” but through hours of research I finally realized its spelled Usener. I kept putting all the different names into the search engines and not until I put in one of the names listed as“Doebbler& Cowan” which is how those two names are listed(together) sometimes in this ledger) did I find out this ledger was from a Texas town. Friedrich William Doebbler was born in 1824 in Prussia. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Gillespie County. Texas. He came to Texas in 1851 with his family. He settled in Grapetown on Grape Creek. Grapetown is a ghost town located along the Old San Antonio Road on South Grape Creek about 9 ½ miles south of Fredericksburg. The loosely-knit community around Grapetown took its first step becoming a town in 1860 when Fredrich Wilhelm Doebbler opened Grapetown’s first business establishment. A dry goods and general store called Doebbl

1908-09 Handwritten Midwife ? Medical Journal Notebook Children's Illness 97pgs
When I first started reading this handwritten journal the first thing that came to my mind was that this was a Midwife’s study journal. The reason I think that is because all 97 handwritten pages have to do with children’s sicknesses; the name of the disease or ailment. The cause and the treatment or cure. Plus other birthing and general heath treatments are represented. So it’s not an actually diary but more of a school notebook. It dates from 1908 and 1909 and when I went to look up the history behind early 20 th century Midwifery. The journal made that much more sense. I found the following description on the web… In the first several decades of the 1900s. Midwifery experienced two changes: 1) first efforts of professionalization and 2) gradual decrease…In the early 1900s, traditional midwives came under fire in what has been called the“midwife ... moreproblem” when they became scapegoats for American’s high infant mortality rate. Despite findings from the White House Conference on Child Health and Protection, the committee on the Costs of Medical Care, and the New York Academy of Medicine that point to physicians rather than midwives as the cause of these high mortality rates, many still blamed midwives for their“ignorant” and“dirty” ways. Scholars believe these traditional midwives became an easy target because of their status as African Americans or immigrants. Additionally, these early midwives lacked formal training, which made physicians even more suspicious of their practice. Of course there is much more history behind midwifery but I wanted to cover the early 1900’s as this is the timeframe this journal covers. There is no cover or name on this journal and again there are 97 handwritten pages which cover the following topics… Nervous System. Genitals, Dentition, Therapeutics, Hot air, Hot vapor, Mustard paste, Stimulations, Feeding infants, Disease of newly born, Congenital atelectasis, Epidemic Haemoglobinuria, Syphilis, Tumor of Umbilical, Mastitis, Starvation and Malnutrition, Scorbutus, Diseas
COLEMAN/DALY/STEWART/HILLS NYC 1888 Antique Estate Executor Journal Handwritten
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Up for bid is an accounting book that belonged to Thomas E Stewart who was the executor of the estate of Elizabeth Coleman. Most of the book is devoted to showing to whom her money went but this book also shows that he was the executor for others who were involved with Elizabeth Coleman such as Daniel Daly who purchased 76 Oliver Street in New York City and died October 13 1889. I believe that 76 Oliver Street was a boarding house that may have been involved with Elizabeth’s Estate. There is also entries for“Committee of James S Hills” and where his money was disbursed. It appears there is a connection to Coleman. Thomas E Stewart’s wife(Harriett Stewart) may also have been somehow related to Elizabeth. Thomas Stewart was an attorney and US. Representative in New York. It looks like Elizabeth ... morewas quite wealthy in 1888, having over $17,000 to leave to assorted people, most receiving approximately $400 if I am reading this correctly. There are three children with the last name Powers(Margaret Mary. Francis and James Coleman) who each received $400, but since they were minors there father Michael F Powers“Father and General Guardian” received the money. Last names of some of the heirs. McCaffray, Dougherty, Heany, Eagan, Hickey, Hills, Powers, Pierce. The book is about 200 pages, the first 100 belonged to Stewart, later a man used the last 100 pages to keep records of his furniture repair business. There are pages with no writing, some pages are missing(mostly in the back where furniture info is) I only wish I knew who Elizabeth Coleman was! I am always happy to email additional pictures to you. I will invoice you within 24 hours of the close of auction. PLEASE SEE PICTURES and Email me with any questions before bidding Thanks for looking and good luck! Shipping: I ship to the USA only. 1926 Handwritten Travel Journal Diary - Student Vacation in Europe -Over 300 pgs
This is a lengthy 1926 travel diary written by a 23 year old American woman who was studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She did not write her name in the diary. But it is obvious from her writing that she came from a fairly well-to-do family and was quite intelligent. In late March, the author and three of her friends crossed the channel to spend Easter vacation in continental Europe. The first part of the journal is about the author's daily life and social activities at the Royal Academy. She described a spiritualist meeting at the People's Palace at the University of London over which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle presided. There is a very lengthy description of a rugby game in which she noted that before the game. The band played"God Save the King" and the King went out onto the field and shook hands with all the ... moreplayers. The author wrote of the two suitors that she had at the time, and of going to see Lillian Davies with one of them. On March 29. The author and her friends began their Easter vacation. What I found unusual was that they crossed the English Channel by plane. There is an entry of several pages describing the crossing. In part she wrote: Mar 29.I read a notice on the front part of the plane explaining that wind currently might cause it to be a trifle unsteady and had visions of the machine rocking violently and myself being ill. I was not the least bit frightened and did not notice until later the sign telling how danger had been minimized.I did notice the size of the plane and estimated it roughly to be 15 ft by 5 ft. We were provided with wicker chairs and leather cushions but found later that it was necessary to wrap them around our feet to keep them warm. The plane landed near Amsterdam- Holland was the first country on the party's itinerary. On occasion. The author made some uncomplimentary comments about Jewish people. The first of these was in Holland, when she wrote about Rembrandts home: Mar 30.It is unfortunately in a rather poor section of the city t
1847-80 Handwritten Journal Ledger Diary Green Family Pennsylvania Cures Recipes
Up for auction today is a handwritten journal originally belonging to the Green family of Pennsylvania. On the front of the journal it says“Charles Green’s Book July 1847_ford PA. I can’t quite make out the town name so I’ve scanned a close up of it. I do know that other places mentioned inside this journal are Chester Co. Bucks Co. Germantown. Schuylkill and Norristown. The other names associated with the book’s owner is“Ephraim Green” and“George A. Green. There are a total of about 65 handwritten pages and a variety of things and dates are represented. I would say the earliest entry is from 1847 and the latest is from 1882. The earliest pages are work related. There are 17 pages and the beginning is titled. Account with Father. Charles Green. These are hours worked. Pay given and the reason for the work. This is somewhat of a diary of sorts ... morebecause he not only talks about who he did work for but also if he had to take time off; the reason for that time off. I’ve scanned a few examples for you to see what I mean. For instance, on October 14 th. 1854 he takes time off for“Mother Brittin’s funeral” There is time taken off for more funerals. Raising hay houses and barns, church functions, helping people move, anniversaries, time spent in the hospital which he says is on“Sixth and Master St. and much more. Lots of names mentioned too. Then part of the journal has to do with coal bought in the 1860’s. And another part shoe repair; at least I think its shoe repair because most of the entries say, Bottoming” and the account is also with a man by the name of“Sylvester Megargal. Some of the names they repaired shoes for are; John Blake. Robert Campbell, Peter Conklin, W. Colfish, Wm. Davis, Jacob Cottman, Allen Jones, George Wolf, W. E. Reese, Charles Osmon, W. Ryan, P. Arrison,P. Lawler, J. B. Holtman, Patrick Conroy, Eugene Cakill, Jesse Roberts, Jos. Byers, W. Slack and more. 1828 Handwritten Journal Ledger Doctor John Phillips Benjamin Swain Bristol PA
Up for auction today is an 1828 handwritten journal or ledger that belonged to Dr. John Phillips. On the front and on the first page it says. Doctr John Phillips in a/c with Benjm Swain. There are no places mentioned in this journal but I believe it might be from Bristol Borough in Pennsylvania. The reason I think this is because when I put both names in the web search engines I came up with this… Bristol Borough: Dr. Edward Swain was the son of Benjamin Swain. Whose ancestors were among the early settlers of the county. He studied medicine with Dr. Phillips, graduated in 1833, commenced practice shortly after, became popular, and was generally successful in the treatment of his patients. But he, like a great many young men of promise, was suddenly cut off in the midst of life. On the fourth day of July, 1939, he accepted an invitation to ... moretake an excursion to Philadelphia on the steamboat Burlington. Shortly after the boat left Burlington she was run into by the steamer Pilot Boy. The doctor being in a side room at the time. Was crushed to death and fell into the river. It was many days before his body was recovered. Thus died a young man of bright prospects, leaving a widow and three children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and affectionate father. Now of course that says Dr. Edward Swain studied medicine under Dr. Phillips. However his father was Benjamin Phillips. I also found an obituary for a Dr. John Phillips and it reads as such. Died at Bristol. Pa. January 1, 1861, after an illness of three weeks, Dr. John Phillips, in his 71 st year. Dr. Phillips graduated at Nassau hall. Princeton, N. J. in the autumn of 1818, and soon after entered the University of Pennsylvania as a student of medicine, where he graduated, with all he honors of the institution, in March 1812. Shortly after, he opened an office at Bristol. Where he has been a remarkably successful practitioner for nearly half a century. He was ardently devoted to his profession, and for many years had the largest circuit of any ph

Journal Funeral Notice Handwritten Genealogy Towle Goldsworthy San Jose CA 1897-
This is such an interesting piece and the funeral notice I found in the back of the journal is so incredible when it comes to Old West collectibles. I’ve never heard such a unique name as Katie Nevada Goldsworthy. That’s a name straight out of an old west novel. However. It was her real name. She was actually the daughter of Calvin F. Towel of San Jose and Los Gatos California. She married Paul Goldsworthy. As you can see by the funeral notice(and there are two of them) Katie died in 1897. Plus the font/script is so typical of a Wild West poster or flyer. Also in the back pocket was a handwritten genealogy for the Towle and Goldsworthy families. Katie’s portion says… Katie Nevada Towle. Born August 21 st. 1863. Prince Royal Humboldt County Nevada Territory. Baptized 1864 by Dr. Wadsworth. In the city of San Francisco. The handwritten genealogy ... moreis one page with writing on both sides. The journal belonged to her father Calvin F. Towle. He was born in 1829 and married to Catharine King. Here’s the crazy part. Catharine was born also in 1829 and both her and Calvin died in 1912. Calvin’s obit says he was the“oldest and best known residents(pioneers) of San Jose and Los Gatos. Says he died from a stroke. The journal only has 30 handwritten pages and most of it seems to have to do with mining and expenses. It dates from the early 1900’s. The journal measures about 3” x 5” and is in pretty rough shape. All in all quite the interesting group that deserves further research.
1897-1899 Handwritten Journal Diary - Charles Edney, Salem Oh - Daily/200 pgs.
This journal was written by Charles Edney. A house and barn raiser and mover, who lived in Salem, Ohio. In 1896, he married his wife Linnie, and I can find no record of any children during the time this was written. He faithfully kept this journal. Writing daily, for three full years. The journal begins on Jan1, 1897 and ends on Dec 31,1899. It is a record of his daily work activities, and he often added personal notes about his private life. Mr Edney was a Civil War veteran, and quite active in the GAR. He mentioned a few times about applying for a pension and wrote of a General Gordon from the south giving a lecture at a meeting of the GAR. He and his wife were active in their church, and attended many local funerals. Some were quite sad- children, and a couple who drowned. There are also mentions of lawsuits and trials. Mr Edney was active ... morein his local community, and was once sworn in as a security officer at the local fair. He was very social and wrote of dinners etc with friends. Much of the journal is about his business of raising houses and barns. And moving structures. I was surprised at how many homes, churches and businesses he moved as well as the number of major structural alterations he made to others- especially interesting to anyone from the Salem area. There are also many full names mentioned throughout. Mr Edney also used the journal for accounting entries. The journal measures 12" x 7 1/2" and is in good condition. Daily entries. 200 handwritten pages. Buyer pays 4.00 S&H via Media Mail.

1837-1851 Handwritten Manuscripts Journal Beekman Town NY Geneva Female Seminary
Up for auction today are a group of handwritten manuscripts which are written between the 1830’s and 1850’s. I found them together so I’m not sure how they all relate but there are several names and several places represented. The first piece is a little booklet that has been hand sewn together and contains 40 handwritten pages(some of which are torn) and was kept or put together by Rhoda Sypher(or Cypher) At first I thought she meant that this was her Cypher book but that is actually her last name. She also writes that she lives in Beekman town Duthes(Dutchess) County; which is in New York. She actually writes her last name both ways using an“S” and also using a“C” Also on numerous pages she writes“Beekman Seminary” I tried to find it and found the town but couldn’t quite locate the seminary. Beekman has some wonderful history concerning ... morethe founding of the town and I quote… The original inhabitants of the Beekman area were Wappingers Indians. One of the Algonquin tribes that inhabited the Northeastern United States. They were an agricultural people who grew corn. Beans, squash and tobacco and their territory extended from the Hudson River to the Taconic Mountains on the New York/ Connecticut border. In 1697. Henry Beekman, a large landowner from the Kingston area. Obtained a land grant from the British Crown for the area that became known as the“Beekman Patent” Due to boundary disputes, Henry returned the patent for a new one in 1703. Antique 1900 Handwritten Journal DIARY Full Bloomsburg University G.E. Elwell PA
Elwell family that has building on campus of Bloomsburg University named after* This is an antique handwritten diary from 1900. It was G. Edward Elwell from Bloomsburg. Pennsylvania. Lists Geo. E. Elwell as person to contact in case of accident or serious illness. Sounds like he was a child of maybe 10 or 11. Listed as 4' 11" and 74 lbs. Diary has an entry for every day in 1900. Also includes memoranda with recipes, list of Christmas presents and other info. It lists Christmas presents from 1899, so I am guessing this may have been a present as well. Also has cash account info with cash on hand and monies spent on various items such as soda water, fudge, hot soda, postage, etc. Upon some research I think this may be the diary of the youngest of the Elwell family in which Bloomsburg University has a building(Elwell Hall) named after. ... moreOn the Bloomsburg University page I found this: Elwell Residence Hall. Completed in 1968, is a nine-story facility that houses 700 men and women. The 149,578-square-foot building is named for three generations of the Elwell family, the younger two of whom graduated from Bloomsburg and later returned to teach. Judge William Elwell served as trustee from 1868 to 1887 and president of the governing board for several years. His son, George E. Elwell, was one of the first graduates of the institution and succeeded his father on the Council of Trustees in 1887, continuing until 1906. George's son, G. Edward Elwell, taught foreign languages at Bloomsburg" Is this the youngest Elwell's diary from 1900? One entry is as follows: Monday April 2. 1900. 50 degrees weather: C. Cl, R(there is a list in the back in the memoranda of weather abbreviations) Got up at 8:30. Went up street. Came home and mixed juice for water ice. S. came. Went up town. Played ball. Made fudge. Played chess. Went to ice plant. S came. Miss Wallace spent the afternoon. Mamma went to Uncle Charlie's funeral. Studied all evening. 1918 Handwritten WWI Soldiers Journal Pvt George Abbott Morgan City LA in France
I can’t seem to find out much about the man who kept this journal but I didn’t take a lot of time to research him. What he writes on the inside front cover says a whole lot however… This book is the property of Pvt. George Goodwin Abbott Co. C. 117 Regt of U. S. Engrs. American Expeditionary Forces Somewhere in France. This book was bought at the city of Langres in the state of Haut- Marne on January 20 th. 1918. That date I was with a detachment constructing barracks bath houses and stables in the village of Faverolles six miles from Rolampont. Then on the opposite side of this on the first page is a drawing of the“Barrack for AEF Soldiers” as it’s titled. I love the provenance. It’s not often I get a diary or journal that states exactly where it was purchased. And a WWI soldier’s journal at that. On the next page it says where he’s been ... morewhile in the war… Camp Jackson Columbia S. C. Camp Sevier Greenville South Carolina. Camp Mills L. I. New York, St. Nazaire France, Manvauges France, Rosiers France, Eruffe France, Beauchemin France, Giey sur au jon France and Chalandry France. I actually found on ancestry.com a U. S. Headstone Application for Military Veterans document for a George Goodwin Abbott. It says he died on November 12. 1941. Enlisted June of 1917 and was discharged in May of 1919. It’s the same George G. Abbott too that wrote this journal because it talks about him being in Co. C Reg. 117. Mrs. Hazel Kight Abbott signed the document. Then in the journal itself there is a poem signed by George or by a"G. G. A. and it says Morgan City La so I'm assuming he's originally from Louisiana. This isn’t a diary of sorts but more a journal of drawings and poetry. And it’s not just any poetry but it has a very passionate feel and most has to do with the war. I’ve quoted one very interesting poem below. The journal has 32 pages of either handwritten poetry or drawings. In fact there are a total of 6 drawings. Including the Barracks. Three of the drawings are of women or a woman. And if that’s not en
1928 Handwritten Diary Journal Greeley Colorado Lingle Wyoming High School Girl
This is a 1928“Wanamaker” diary that originally belonged to a young woman who lived in Lingle Wyoming for the first half of this diary and then in September the family moves to Greeley Colorado. Her name is written in the back of the diary and I’ve scanned a close up of it as I can’t quite make out her last name. Her first name is Elizabeth and her middle name starts with a S. Her birthday is on June 6 th. Her mother’s birthday is on August 16 th. And her father’s birthday is on October 5 th. I’m sure there are other clues as to who she is throughout the diary. I can tell you that she plays the fiddle. Is in the school orchestra, attends quite a few high school sporting events, quilts, paints and much more. Wanamaker diaries are great reference pieces too because the first 160 pages have wonderful ad’s and“useful information” as do the last ... more138 pages. Here are a few examples of her entries… 1928“January 14 th, Have been alone all day so it seems. Mr. Nash and father went away this morning. 1941-1945 Handwritten Diary Journal Widow Susan Eckler Thompson Middlefield NY
Up for auction today is a five year diary representing the years 1941-1945. It originally belonged to a widow by the names of Susan V. Eckler) Thompson of Middlefield New York. Susan was born on March 19 th. 1867 and died on March 21 st. 1952. I have not read this diary only browsed through it to gather a few pages to scan. I can tell you that the diary has full entries for every day of each year. I found Susan’s husband on the Find a Grave web site. Seems he died in 1930. 11 years before the first entry in this diary. Here is his obituary… Ellery Pratt Thompson. A highly respected citizen of Middlefield, was called to rest on Friday, October 31st. Mr. Thompson had been ill for nearly two years, but had been able to be about the farm until within a few days of his death. Mr. Thompson was sixty-two years of age and was born in Middlefield ... moreon August 4, 1868, the son of Philip Thompson and Levantia Cummings. All of his life has been spent in Middlefield, where he was well liked by all; and his passing leaves a vacant spot that can be filled by none other. Burial was made in the Middlefield cemetery. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife and daughter, Mrs. B. F. Slater, of Middlefield, and by one brother, S. G. Thompson, of Middlefield. I did go through this diary and write down a few of the many names of the folks living in Middlefield at the time…Fisher. Flora Parshall, McKillip, Pollett, Hearn, Reynolds, Carrie Van Hozen, Albert Gates, McNeer, Ester Wilson, Dr. Cruttenden, May North, Edith Webster, Lena Eckler, Addie Tabor, Daisy Snyder, Lee, Knox and many more. The diary measures about 4” x 5 ½” and other than the metal clasp being loose(but accounted for) and the closure tab being quite warn. The diary is in good shape.
1922 Handwritten Travel Diary Journal - Wealthy Woman's 3 mo Tour of Europe
The author of this diary was Elizabeth(Betsy) Clifford of Duluth MN. She was 25 years old when she made the trip to Europe which she wrote about in this diary. Ms Clifford was from a wealthy family. Which is evidenced by the expensive hotels they stayed at, and the manner in which they traveled. The 1920 Census lists the author's residence as Los Angeles, Ca, although at the end of the trip she returned to Duluth. I have been unable to find out what the young woman did while in LA, but in the diary she lists several names under the heading"Hollywood Friends" She also wrote of a few people she ran into on the trip who worked at MGM or lived in Hollywood. Accompanied by her mother. Ms Clifford left Duluth on July 5, 1922 and traveled by train to Chicago. From there she and her mother traveled to Quebec where on July 11, they boarded ... morethe Empress of France for Europe. During the 7 day crossing, the author became involved with a young man, the first of many suitors and young men on this trip that she wrote about in the diary. During the next 3 months. Ms Clifford described in her diary the many sights she saw in England, Scotland, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Italy. She described the damage from the war in Belgium, and also wrote of the war in France: We drove through Verdun(a mass of ruins) Verdun Fort- then to Fort deVaux- went through it. Maj Renwald defended the fort for 3 days. Then finally surrendered to the Germans- carrier pigeons- 19 men went for water. Three returned. visited Ossuaire, built by the American Red Cross- the most touching scene of all. Even the eyes of the priest were filled with tears. Ms Clifford loved Paris and had quite the time there. Sightseeing, shopping and fashion shows, the nightlife and dancing. She and her mother went to the Folies Bergere, which her mother"didn't quite enjoy- too nude, no tops" The author also paid a visit to the famous"Dead Rat" nightclub. Of all the countries she visited, the author seemed to like Italy the least

1845 Handwritten Folk Art Journal Skillington & Daniels Family Philadelphia Capt
It took me a little while to actually figure out the provenance behind this group but I finally did. As you can see there is a beautiful folk-art marbled covered handwritten journal dated 1845. On the front of this journal is a name plate with the name“M. B. Skillington. Under the handwritten name is printed. Sold by Bennett and Walton. No. 37, Market Street, Phila. which of course means she purchased her book there. Bennett and Walton were well known publishers in Philadelphia. At one time the album must have come apart as it’s been hand stitched together on the spine. I can imagine what it must have looked like when new as the marbled cover still has a beautiful quality to it. Although very worn. Then on the inside front cover is a marvelous hand drawn folk art flower and the name“Mira B. Daniel. After that you’ll find 22 handwritten pages ... moreof poetry or essays. One has the title. Poetry from Glenmore Abbey” and another is a three page essay titled. Reasons why I cannot leave the M. E. Church. Some of these are signed by“Martha” Then in the back of the book on one of the last pages is a poem written by Elizabeth D. Daniel. And finally on the last page are the names. Aaron and Mira B. Daniel. When researching I finally came up with some genealogy information concerning the Skillington’s and Daniel’s. Here are the members of the household including their age on the Philadelphia 1850 census: Martha Skillington 34. Oscar Skillington 4, Cap. Harding 40, Martha Daniels 20, Cap Henry H. Daniels 26, Mira B. Daniels 16, Elizabeth Daniels 14, Adeline Daniels 12, Adeline Skillington 32 and Catharine Hughes 20. I’m almost positive that the M.B. Skillington on the front meant Martha B. Skillington; so it was Martha’s book first and then Mira signed it. I believe that because I also found Martha Skillington on other web sites and she also had the middle initial of B. In the above census it says Cap Harding which means Captain Harding Skillington which is Martha’s husband. He was a sea captain and died in 1856 as

Facts, poems, etc, most of which are about the war and the Leviathan. On the inside front cover of the journal it says… If anybody should steal this book. For an undertaker then should look. If it should be gone and I happen to find a clue; Well! I’ll leave it to you. What would you do. F. W. W. If ever you should see this book. Read it over, take a look. I am not looking for sale. Although you ... moremay think they are good tales. F. W. W. If ever you come on this ship and see the engine room. Be sure and do not make that slip. And miss seeing the fire rooms. F. W. W. Before I describe the rest of the pieces in this journal I want to give you a little history concerning the ship itself which I found on the web. And I quote… SS Leviathan. Originally built as the Vaterland, was an ocean liner which regularly crossed the North Atlantic from 1914 to 1934. The second of three sister ships built by Germany’s Hamburg America Line for their transatlantic passenger service. 20th Century Handwritten Journal Dr. Sharman Tea Shop Brooklyn NY Born in India
This is such an interesting journal. It originally belonged to Edward James Sharman of Brooklyn New York. Now on the front it says M.D. so I assumed he was a doctor but everything I’m finding out about him shows him as owning a tea shop. Perhaps it was a homeopathic tea shop? And I’m sure he knew a lot about teas as he was born in Meerut. Uttar Pradesh India on June 9 th. 1857. His wife was Alison Dale and they were married in 1878. She was born in Dunbar, East Lothian Scotland. I found a wonderful article on the web that talks all about the Sharman’s and their long standing tea shop and I quote… Taken from Brooklyn Eagle Newspaper November 27. 1938 SHARMANS TO NOTE 60 TH ANNIVERSARY. COUPLE’S TEA STORE HAS BEEN DOWNTON LANDMARK 46 YEARS. Edward J. Sharman. Who will celebrate his 60 th wedding anniversary with Mrs. Sharman next Thursday in ... moretheir home and tea store at 581 Myrtle Ave. Distinctly remembers the day in 1882 when the Brooklyn Bridge was opened to the public. Mr. Sharman is 83. His wife is 82. I had seen a visit of Queen Victoria to a town in Scotland and other mass events. Mr. Sharman said, But the mob scene at the opening of the bridge beat them all. The anniversary this week will be a quiet one, as too much excitement is not so good for the aged couple. However, throughout the week, it is expected that they will be visited by their four sons, Edward R. William D. Albert and Frederick, and a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Knight. They have three great-grand-children. Mr. Sharman places much faith in the future of Brooklyn, observing: I have seen Brooklyn grow from a small town to a large one. I have great hopes that it will become one of the most prosperous towns in the state in a comparatively short time. He took pains to pay tribute to the“Old Timers’ Page” now appearing in the Brooklyn Eagle. I remember almost everything on that page. he added. It is splendid for the old timers of Brooklyn to read about their old experiences. Sharman’s” has been a Brooklyn landmark for 46 years. Ever
DIARY of Isaac G. Hotchkiss 1879 handwritten journal
I suggest reading the photos. They really are interesting. He was involved as a mason and also belonged to a farmers lodge in flushing Michigan. He kept timely record of the weather and worked a variety of trades including farmhand. Butcher, carpentry, using horses. It is obvious that record keeping was important to him. The penmanship is beautiful. He would complete one book like this a year. He was 49.
