I have been in the business for 50 years -- this is the first time I have come across such a complete pharmacist or physician's recipe box for all types ... moreof drugs and cures. This journal is dating from 1826 and is entitled Formulae Medicamentorium A Compendium of the Modern Practical Physic 1826. This is bound in its original leather marbelized cardboard binding. This has an extraordinary amount of remedies, cures, and compounds of herbs. Also, there are cutouts from newspapers and periodicals posted here and there throughout the journal. There is everything from cough remedies upward. Practical recipes for waterproofing from boots to curing or treating diphtheria. One of the most interesting ledgers I have handled this entire time. We are selling this as we found it out of the estate. Invaluable information.

ANTIQUE FDNY LEDGER Handwritten Book/Vintage Firefighting/NYC Fire Dept. 1800s
FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT LEDGER. This amazing volume was compiled by Hook& Ladder Company No. 19 which at the time operated from Ogden Avenue in the Bronx section of New York City. The location where it was originally organized. Entries run from May 6th through August 15th, 1887, and cover day-to-day activities of the firehouse in fascinating detail. Massive folio contains some 500 numbered pages. Each chock full of handwritten entries including fire calls and alarms, ambulance calls, roll calls, company drills, meal breaks, caring and exercising of the horses, trips to the blacksmith shop, equipment maintenance, supply purchases, etc. This is one of those vintage gems which should be seen to be fully appreciated. A truly remarkable time capsule from a bygone era of NYC firefighting. The New York ... moreCity Fire Department traces its origins back to 1648 when the first fire ordinance was adopted in what then was the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. Hooks. Ladders and buckets were financed through the collection of fines for dirty chimneys and a fire watch was established consisting of eight wardens which were drawn from the male population. An organization known as the"prowlers" but given the nickname"the rattle watch" patrolled the streets with buckets, ladders and hooks from nine in the evening until dawn looking for fires. Leather shoe buckets, 250 in all, were manufactured by local Dutch shoemakers in 1658, and these"bucket brigades" are regarded as the beginning of the New York Fire Department. In 1664 New Amsterdam became a British settlement and was renamed New York. The first New York fire brigade entered service in 1731 equipped with two hand-drawn pumpers which had been transported from London. England. These two pumpers formed Engine Company 1 and Engine Company 2. These were the first fire engines to be used in the American colonies, and all able-bodied citizens were required to respond to a fire alarm and to participate in the exting
Handwritten Ledger 496 pag. Wright Furniture Grand Rapids Albert Dickerman 1889
YOU ARE BIDDING ON: the personal indexed correspondence ledger of 496 handwritten pages by Albert E. Dickerman. Manager of the John A. Wright Furniture Company Manufactures Gobleville, Michigan from March 14, and ends on May 11, 1889. From my research. They were part of the furniture companies centered in Grand Rapids Michigan in the late 19th Century. This book is important because this is a snapshot into late 19th century furniture industry and business practices. The John A. Wright Furniture was located near The Grand Rapids Michigan during the heyday of its great design and production of furniture. This is a look into the business relations within the industry and the personal life of people in commerce. This book is about pricing. Quality control, costs, and all the day to day issues related to the company. It is the copies of correspondence ... morebetween the company and its buyers and vendors. Most of these business correspondence ledgers did not survive. One in this condition is rare to find. In the beginning there are the names of who the letters were sent to with the corresponding number to the page where the letter is found. There are references to banks. Individuals, suppliers and varnish companies, the Herald Newspaper among others. This book was prepared as a duplicate copy of all correspondence sent by Horace Dickerman who was the factory manager. Some reference are very personal where he admits to the bookkeeping error and then asks about doing more business. Oher references relate to an order for stamps not beign useful. There is a page that shows the labor costs of about 27 employees for the previous month. The book is 1/4 bound leather. It was purchased from: Skeen& Stuart Stationary Co. Blank Books Stationery and Printing 77 Madison Street Chicago. The letters are written in ink on a thin trace paper. My assumption is that a lined paper was placed under the page and used as a guide since the writing is beautifully done. Some pages the ink is as clear as when written and on some pages the ink ran
1871 Handwritten Ledger Journal Fredericksburg Grapetown TX Schaper Usener Store
I almost gave up on my research with this one but finally hit a gold mine of information concerning the families listed on the pages. The person I purchased this from said it came out of an Arizona estate so he figured it was a mercantile ledger from an Arizona town. So that actually took me on all kinds of wild goose chases. It’s not Arizona; it’s Texas. Before I get to how I discovered this information. I want to give you a brief description of the ledger itself. This 1870’s ledger contains about 290 handwritten“general store” type expense entries. Four pages have been torn out but otherwise all pages are accounted for. There are hundreds of names written on the pages and also the items they purchased. For example; Revolving pistols. Boots, blankets, material, jeans, candy, bottle of bitter, tobacco, box mustard powder, buggy whip, whiskey, ... morejugs, brandy, spices, axe handles, coffee, belts, combs, underskirt, gloves, stockings, earrings, nails, pocket book, and on and on and on. There were only two places that I saw listed in this ledger; Grape Creek and Palo Alto. On the first page at the top it says Schaper& Usener. At first I thought it was“Ussner” but through hours of research I finally realized its spelled Usener. I kept putting all the different names into the search engines and not until I put in one of the names listed as“Doebbler& Cowan” which is how those two names are listed(together) sometimes in this ledger) did I find out this ledger was from a Texas town. Friedrich William Doebbler was born in 1824 in Prussia. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Gillespie County. Texas. He came to Texas in 1851 with his family. He settled in Grapetown on Grape Creek. Grapetown is a ghost town located along the Old San Antonio Road on South Grape Creek about 9 ½ miles south of Fredericksburg. The loosely-knit community around Grapetown took its first step becoming a town in 1860 when Fredrich Wilhelm Doebbler opened Grapetown’s first business establishment. A dry goods and general store called Doebbl
Patrons Husbandry Olean NY Grange AGRARIAN HISTORY HANDWRITTEN LEDGER MASONIC
Auction for 7” x 8 ½” Treasurer’s Ledger- notebook. Completely hand written for The Patrons of Husbandry Olean N.Y. Grange# 971. Organized Dec. 21 st 1894. There are two Olean locations where I think the meetings may have been held. Based on the entries– W.H. Nulting Hall rental and the I.O.O.F. Hall or Royal Lodge I.O.O.F. rent. The earlier years of the Grange included Masonic styled rituals that were gradually replaced by more practical meeting services. This unique book offers a glimpse into the lesser known. Secretive aspects of Grange History. When the Grange first began in 1867. It borrowed some of its rituals and symbols from Freemasonry, including. Oaths and special passwords. It also copied ideas from Greek and Roman mythology and the Bible. Small. Ceremonial farm tools are often displayed at Grange meetings. Elected officers ... moreare in charge of opening and closing each meeting. There are seven degrees of Grange membership; the ceremony of each degree relates to the seasons and various symbols and principles. During the last few decades. The Grange has moved towards public meetings and no longer meets in secret. Though the secret meetings do not occur, the Grange still acknowledges its rich history and practices some traditions. Capes and Hoodwinks are listed in the Ledger payments indicating that they did ritual ceremonies. The Hoodwink is a Masonic Blindfold, capes are self-explanatory. Flower Baskets for" the three graces" are also listed ~( Ceres = seeds change and transformation the workings of God. Pomona- Fruit blossoms a symbol of hope and Autumn and Flora = flowers = symbols of love and charity aka the flowers of good work. The appearance of the Three Graces and the Capes and Hoodwinks in the ledger indicates that they were a"working" Grange and practiced ritual and ceremony. The book has a nice span of years starting 1915 and ending in 1936. It is much more than a documentation of the Grange activities of“Disbursements and Receipts” throughout those years. It is also a rec

I can’t quite make out the town name so I’ve scanned a close up of it. I do know that other places mentioned inside this journal are Chester Co. Bucks Co. Germantown. Schuylkill and Norristown. The other names associated with the book’s owner is“Ephraim Green” and“George A. Green. There are a total of about 65 handwritten pages and a variety of things and dates are represented. I would say the earliest entry is from 1847 and the latest is from 1882. The earliest pages are work related. There are 17 pages and the beginning is titled. Account with Father. Charles Green. These are hours worked. Pay given and the reason for the work. This is somewhat of a diary of sorts ... morebecause he not only talks about who he did work for but also if he had to take time off; the reason for that time off. I’ve scanned a few examples for you to see what I mean. For instance, on October 14 th. 1854 he takes time off for“Mother Brittin’s funeral” There is time taken off for more funerals. Raising hay houses and barns, church functions, helping people move, anniversaries, time spent in the hospital which he says is on“Sixth and Master St. and much more. Lots of names mentioned too. Then part of the journal has to do with coal bought in the 1860’s. And another part shoe repair; at least I think its shoe repair because most of the entries say, Bottoming” and the account is also with a man by the name of“Sylvester Megargal. Some of the names they repaired shoes for are; John Blake. Robert Campbell, Peter Conklin, W. Colfish, Wm. Davis, Jacob Cottman, Allen Jones, George Wolf, W. E. Reese, Charles Osmon, W. Ryan, P. Arrison,P. Lawler, J. B. Holtman, Patrick Conroy, Eugene Cakill, Jesse Roberts, Jos. Byers, W. Slack and more. Finally most of the pages have to do with recipes and cures dating from the 1870’s and 1880’s. Many of them are for; Di
1828 Handwritten Journal Ledger Doctor John Phillips Benjamin Swain Bristol PA
Up for auction today is an 1828 handwritten journal or ledger that belonged to Dr. John Phillips. On the front and on the first page it says. Doctr John Phillips in a/c with Benjm Swain. There are no places mentioned in this journal but I believe it might be from Bristol Borough in Pennsylvania. The reason I think this is because when I put both names in the web search engines I came up with this… Bristol Borough: Dr. Edward Swain was the son of Benjamin Swain. Whose ancestors were among the early settlers of the county. He studied medicine with Dr. Phillips, graduated in 1833, commenced practice shortly after, became popular, and was generally successful in the treatment of his patients. But he, like a great many young men of promise, was suddenly cut off in the midst of life. On the fourth day of July, 1939, he accepted an invitation to ... moretake an excursion to Philadelphia on the steamboat Burlington. Shortly after the boat left Burlington she was run into by the steamer Pilot Boy. The doctor being in a side room at the time. Was crushed to death and fell into the river. It was many days before his body was recovered. Thus died a young man of bright prospects, leaving a widow and three children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and affectionate father. Now of course that says Dr. Edward Swain studied medicine under Dr. Phillips. However his father was Benjamin Phillips. I also found an obituary for a Dr. John Phillips and it reads as such. Died at Bristol. Pa. January 1, 1861, after an illness of three weeks, Dr. John Phillips, in his 71 st year. Dr. Phillips graduated at Nassau hall. Princeton, N. J. in the autumn of 1818, and soon after entered the University of Pennsylvania as a student of medicine, where he graduated, with all he honors of the institution, in March 1812. Shortly after, he opened an office at Bristol. Where he has been a remarkably successful practitioner for nearly half a century. He was ardently devoted to his profession, and for many years had the largest circuit of any ph

This ledger is the original Ledger from the Windemere Ranch of La Mirada California. Handwritten. It describes the money transactions at Windemere Ranch from March 1901 to July 1906. The Ledger numbers 200 pages with circa 30 to 40 entries per page. Measures about 9x14 inches. Expenses are described by their date, amount and nature. The ledger gives information about wages, purchases, sales, investments, etc. and offers insight into the workings of the ranch over those 5 years as well as a good source of reference to the businesses of the area with which it dealt. The Ledger hails from the back storage inventory of a recently closed bookstore in Pasadena. Expenses are described by their date. Amount and nature. 1869 Handwritten Treasurer Ledger Schuylkill Co. PA Folk Art Scrap 100s of Names
Up for auction today is a huge ledger(10 ½” x 16” and is 2” thick) belonging to Conrad Seltzer who was the Treasurer of Schuylkill County Pennsylvania. It represents the year 1869 from January to October and has 352 handwritten pages. It is full of hundreds of names of the folks in the area who were paid or were charged for various things during that year. For an example I’ve listed a few names and what was written beside their names; Agnes Allison-Witness fees. Israel Foose-Constable Fees, Silas Hufnagle- Assessor fees, Daniel Shepp-Bridge Views, Ernst Orth-Road Tax, Charles Frailey-Justice Fees, R. Kline& Co.Burial Ex. A. H. Tallerstadt-Post. Mort. Ex. Lewis F. Kimmel-Agricultural Society, Bright& Co. Nails for Alms House, W. G. Johnson-Court Crier, Charles Logue-Liquor, John Hutton-Police, and many many more. There are other ... morepages. One that almost looks like a census and then at the end is a page devoted to the Alms House. Plus in the middle of the book are numerous pages in a row where tons of people were applying for a“Tavern License. Now the condition of the ledger is very poor. The cover is a mess and is falling off of the binding. The binding is also split about ¼ of the way through but most of the pages are attached. Some little girl also used this later on as a scrapbook as there are tiny pieces of loose scrap between the pages and several pressed leaves. One page does have the scrap glued to it as you can see in the scan. It looks like a doll house room. Please keep the condition in mind when purchasing.

Very Rare & Historical 1872 Handwritten Ledger Jouranl Oregon City Family Names
This is an extremely rare and one of a kind handwritten journal or ledger that has such amazing historical value as far as the state of Oregon goes. It was from the great city of Oregon City which is on the outskirts of Portland. Before I describe the ledger I want to give you some history behind the city. It’s long but well worth reading if you don’t know much about it… OREGON CITY: In 1823. Dr. John McLoughlin was appointed Chief Factor of the Hudson’s Bay Company at Fort Vancouver. In 1829. McLoughlin laid out a two-square mile claim at the Willamette Falls and began construction of three houses to shelter employees working at the site. The houses were burned by the natives. But rebuilt by McLoughlin. A small fur trading center was also established and work was begun on a millrace. These buildings became the first permanent white settlement ... morein the Willamette Valley. By 1839. The settlement had grown to a collection of small houses clustered around the millrace populated primarily by employees of the Hudson’s Bay Company. The settlement. Which would become Oregon City. Was originally known as Willamette Falls. In 1833. Reverend Jason Lee and his nephew, Reverend Daniel Lee, were approved by the Mission Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church to establish a mission in the west. When the Lees arrived at Fort Vancouver. McLoughlin encouraged them to start their work south of the Columbia River in the Willamette Valley. The Willamette Mission was established in 1834 in present-day Marion County. During the winter of 1839-1840. Reverend Jason Lee gave a series of lectures in Peoria. Illinois in an effort to recruit reinforcements for the Methodist Mission and to encourage American settlement in the Oregon Territory. Following these lectures. The first overland American immigrant party was organized. Led by Thomas J. Farnham, the Peoria Party arrived at the Willamette Falls settlement in late 1839 and early 1840. Others arrived via ship. Including George Abernethy and Alvin F. Waller, both part of

Historic Bucks County Handwritten Ledger Haycock Run, PA 1890-1894 w 224 pages
This is a great piece of Bucks County history. It is a handwritten store ledger of names in Haycock Township. Bucks County, PA from 1890 to 1894. A bit of history for reference-Haycock is mentioned in a deed as early as 1737. According to the History of Bucks County, PA Archives, it was probably named many years before the township was organized after the little mountain in it which was so called because of its resemblance to a cock of hay. The creek which winds along the base of the mountain is called Haycock Run, in the boundary of Nockamixon, 1742. The front page of this ledger has a stamped attribution that reads"E. A. Frankenfield, Dealer in General Merchandise, Haycock Run, PA" It could be Abel Frankenfield, the third son of Henry who married Mary C. daughter of John and Diana(Sassman) Hager. According to the History of Bucks ... moreCounty, PA Archives, Abel received a liberal education, and in 1877 engaged in general merchandising. He was an assistant postmaster at Haycock Run and the office was in his store. I do not know for sure that this is his store ledger, but the history fits. There are 225 numerically stamped pages. The first entry is 1890 for Abel McCarty. The last entry is M.D. Frankenfield, 1894. On page 124, Haycock Township is listed as a customer dated 1891. The ledger show entries of"Mdse" purchased, the date and the amount on the left side of the page. Across from that, within the right part of the page, is date of payment, the amount, and the method of payment. Many times payment is cash. But other entries include by Hauling, by Prod(produce) by Beans, by Eggs, Shoulder, Squab, Baskets, Mdse, to name a few. The very first pages of this ledger are names in alphabetical order with numbers across from them. I have no idea what they reference. These names take up the A-Z portion of the front of this ledger. Then page 1 begins as a numerical stamp in the upper right of the page. This ledger is 12 1/2" high and 7 1/2" wide. Along the side of the binding is printed the word

There are two diaries with this group and between the two they have about 230 pages. Also with this lot are 2 handwritten expense journal/ Log book related to the Estate of U.S Grant Shoemaker. The one designated Cash Book starts in 1935 ends 1948 is approx. 1/3 filled in. c.1875 Handwritten Journal? Ledger? Poetry, Newspaper clippings~Beautiful
Up for auction are two handwritten books 1- Journal/Ledger? Dated 1875 with beautiful script throughout book. I am not sure what the purpose was. It seems like it was partly a ledger. Then a journal, then about 60% of the pages have newspaper clippings of poetry pasted on top of the script. This book is filled from front to end- about 100 pages. The binding is in poor condition. Paper shows browning, edges show wear- but overall OK condition, certainly readable. 2- Kids Journal c 1894. Almost blank. That is why I'm including it. A few newspaper journals. This book is in much better condition. This is a great price for someone that likes script or antiques. Email with any questions. Priced to MOVE!

LISBON MAINE Androscoggin County ME Handwritten Manuscript Cobbler Ledger 1800s
FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL MID-19TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT ACCOUNT BOOK FROM LISBON, MAINE. This terrific handwritten volume dates from 1834-1859 and was kept by cobbler William Booker(1812-1881) of Lison Falls. Maine. Compiler was fastidious in recording his entries, as the right and left columns balance out with equal sums on most every page. It appears the frugal yankee Booker also leveraged his cobbler skills through the use of bartering, sometimes making or repairing shoes in exchange for needed items rather than cash. Impressive ledger spans some twenty-five years of William Booker's life. Comprising of myriad of transactions he engaged in throughout that period. Although he took part in many activities such as butchering, haying, hauling, threshing, working in the mill, laying walls, fencing, harvesting, ploughing, blasting stone, etc. his ... moreprinciple skill set was that of a cobbler. Throughout much of volume, Mr. Booker derives an income and secures needed commodities by making and repairing shoes. Entries include tapping, mending, bottoming, binding, cutting, stitching, setting, etc. and encompass an array of footwear for men, women, and children, with size breakdowns sometimes included. Array of styles include leather shoes, work shoes, and boots of all kinds, along with occasional entries for the purchase of leather for his cobbler activities. Compiler also loaned out his horse to supplement his income, with customers traveling from Lisbon to various nearby communities such as Harpswell, Little River, Saco, Portland, Brunswick, Topsham, Yarmouth, Lewiston, etc. Account book is also a treasure trove of local genealogy as numerous names appear throughout. Including Ephraigm Andrews, Melinda Andrews, Jacob Bibber, Elbridge Blethen, Joseph Blethen, James Booker, Louisa Booker, Pierce Booker, Washington Booker, John Bradley, Hannah Brickett, James Brickett, Benjamin Burgess, Joshua Burrington, J.R. Carr, Moses Catlin, Samuel Catlin, Widow Catlin, William Center, James Cleaveland, John Cleaveland, Alfred Cobb, Arthur

It appears to be a combination of a ledger for a store, hotel, farm, and household expenses. There is a lot of mention of Napa Valley and Nipomo, CA.
