FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT LEDGER. This amazing volume was compiled by Hook& Ladder Company No. 19 which at the time operated from Ogden Avenue in the Bronx section of New York City. The location where it was originally organized. Entries run from May 6th through August 15th, 1887, and cover day-to-day activities of the firehouse in fascinating detail. Massive folio contains some 500 numbered pages. Each chock full of handwritten entries including fire calls and alarms, ambulance calls, roll calls, company drills, meal breaks, caring and exercising of the horses, trips to the blacksmith shop, equipment maintenance, supply purchases, etc. This is one of those vintage gems which should be seen to be fully appreciated. Leather shoe buckets, 250 in all, were manufactured by local Dutch shoemakers in 1658, and these"bucket brigades" are regarded as the beginning of the New York Fire Department. In 1664 New Amsterdam became a British settlement and was renamed New York. The first New York fire brigade entered service in 1731 equipped with two hand-drawn pumpers which had been transported from London. England. These two pumpers formed Engine Company 1 and Engine Company 2. These were the first fire engines to be used in the American colonies, and all able-bodied citizens were required to respond to a fire alarm and to participate in the exting

There may be names of other famous folks in the ledger if you take the time to peruse almost 400 pages. Final sale. So please ask any questions and examine all photos prior to purchase. Thanks for looking! Shipping notes: Ledger will be shipped with insurance and tracking service. International buyers are welcome but are responsible for any customs/duties that may be levied by their respective country.

1878 CITIZENS BANK DEPOSIT LEDGER - RECORD BOOK OF ALL DEPOSITS 1878 thru 1880
This 135 year old Citizens Bank deposit Ledger was recently discoverd in Providence. Rhode Island. The folio size tooled leather ledger contains 580 pages of hand written deposits from July of 1878 through April of 1880. Today Ctizens Bank is one of the 15 largest commercial banking companies in the country. Citizens Bank traces its origins to High Street Bank which was located on High Street(now called Westminster Street) in Providence, Rhode Island. High Street Bank was established in 1828 and in 1871 the bank established its own savings bank, Citizens Savings Bank. The following decades became difficult for the bank, as Providence gradually lost its pre-eminence as an industrial center and seaport. By the 1920's. Prospetcs seemed better but god times were short lived. The Great Depression of the 1930's hit hard in New England where ... morethe regions vital textile indistry was already in steep decline. Nonetheless Citizen's history of prudent lending meant losses were modest compared to ite rivals. By the 1940's Citizens Bank gained controlling interest inits founder, High Street Bank, and in 1848 High Street Bank changed its name to Citizens Trust Company. After World War II a number of branches were opened and Greenville Trust was acquired. Growth continued and by 1981 Citizens had 29 branches statewide. By the end of the 1980's it was clear that an allience with an international partner was needed for Citizens to remain successful. In 1988 the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. Today RBS Citizens has approximately 1,300 branches more than 2,500 ATM machines and nearly 19,000 colleagues in 12 states. This all started from the one HIgh Street Bank of which I am offering one its earlist deposit ledgers. The ledger measures approx. 12 x 16 inches and is 3 inches thick. This 135 year old ledger retains the records of all the deposts made from July 1878 through April of 1880. The ledger is missing the leather that covered the spine otherwise it is in s fine

1837 ERIE, PA LEDGER BOOK of JOSEPH M. STERRETT, JOHN H. WALKER, E.D. GUNNISON
HANDWRITTEN ACCOUNTS LEDGER BOOK- of JOSEPH M. STERRETT. JOHN H. WALKER, and E. D. GUNNISON, all Notable Citizens of ERIE PENNSYLVANIA. The names of Joseph M. Sterrett and John H. Walker are on the inside front cover, the names of all three are found at the top of many pages. The ledger accounts are all of individuals and/or entities from ERIE. And are mostly from 1837 and 1838. The ledger appears to be an accounting of the LIQUIDATION of a GENERAL STORE OWNED BY E. D. GUNNISON(another notable citizen of Erie. Pennsylvania) now under RECEIVERSHIP of Joseph M. Sterrett and John H. Walker. Many pages are titled:Joseph M. Sterrett& John H. Walker assignees of Gunnison& Sage” In 1835. Joseph M. Gunnison formed a co-partnership with Charles T. Sage, his son-in-law, under the Firm name of“Gunnison& Sage” The financial revulsion of 1836 ... morecaught them, and the Firm went down, stripping him of most of his accumulations. From the book“A Genealogy of the Descendants of Hugh Gunnison of Boston, Mass: From 1610-1876. One Hundred and Twenty Seven Families. compiled by George W. Gunnison, published by George A. Foxcroft, 1880* The ACCOUNTS are all VERY DETAILED. They include FULL NAMES of MANY ERIE RESIDENTS along with the items purchased on account. The title of most of the ledger pages is“Erie” along with a month and year. Approximately 130 pages are filled with handwritten entries. Probably another 200 pages are blank. The first three pages seem to be a listing of accounts paid out by the Receivership. Including“County Taxes” Rent to various individuals, notes paid, etc. Includes names of persons and/or entities paid, amounts, dates. This is followed by 101 pages filled with individual accounts. With Full Names of the account holder(s) description of item(s) purchased, and amounts owed or have paid. This was perhaps for collection purposes. This is followed by another three pages of accounts paid. Again including names and/or entities paid, amounts, and dates. There are then several pages tha

1819-1850 Richmond Maine Ledger Day Book Toothaker Hallowell Gardiner
This wonderful 134 page ledger belonged to an early Richmond. Maine resident named Joseph Toothaker. His entries date from 1819 to 1850 with the vast majority written in the 1820's and 1830's. All sorts of labor is described including, but not limited to: barn repair, baling hay, harvesting pumpkins, cutting timber, ploughing, chopping firewood, framing houses, hauling lumber by oxen to area mills, building walls, shearing sheep, mending fences, and digging wells. Frequent trips by horseback, wagon, or sleigh are also cited. Most of these took him up along the Kennebec River to Hallowell and Gardiner. However, other Maine destinations include the towns of Litchfield, Cathance, Topsham, and Brunswick. Some of the surnames of those he worked for are: Robinson, Henry, Flanders, Wilson, Libby, Liniss, Huntington, Shaw, Brown, Rolins, ... moreDavis, Lennan, Deering, Michel, Temple, Linman, Hariman, Ring, Clossen, and Sagley. The book measures slightly over 6" x 7" unopened, and is very tightly bound with no loose pages. Scattered throughout are twenty-four pages with no entries. There are also four or five pages other pages that are torn or missing part of the page. Yet, overall, this historical relic remains in very good condition- and is a fantastic look into the life of a hardworking Maine man during the early 19th century. Powered by The free listing tool. Very Rare 1844-1863 HAND WRITTEN OBSTETRICAL LEDGER CASE BOOK--New York City
Very Rare 1844-1863 HAND WRITTEN OBSTETRICAL LEDGER CASE BOOK-New York City Very rare and important obstetrical ledger. Handwritten by doctors detailing the labor, delivery& outcomes of the women that they attended between 1844 and 1863 at the New York Female Asylum For Lying-In- Women. Over 300 entries on about 70 pages starting in 1844 with the last year being 1863. Most entries with normal deliveries are brief with the mothers name. Nativity, age, marital status, pregnancies, important occurrences during pregnancy, date onset of labor, presentation, occurrences during/after labor, date/time termination of labor, stages, sex, occurrences to child and remarks. Cases which were complicated are detailed with longer notes and later in the ledger some cases took one or two pages. There are at least two different writers. The last(in the ... more1860's) being a little harder to read. Someone more familiar with the medical/obstetrical terminology of the times would probably have an easier time reading this. I believe that this is from The New York Female Asylum For Lying-In-Women located at 85 Marion in Brooklyn during this period. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH. HERE'S HOW I CAME TO THIS CONCLUSION: First. Because of the details, use of Chloroform, ergot, etc. and an entry"Midwife had been with her for 2 days" it's pretty clear that this was written by doctors and not midwives. Second. Because of the orderly and neat entries and the frequent poor outcomes and the writers' consultation with other doctors I feel certain that these entries took place in a hospital setting. Third. Because of two locations mentioned, Eastchester and Scarsdale next to two of the women(and I'm assuming they were mentioned because they were from"out of town" that the location of this hospital was in or near New York City. Fourth. Two doctors are mentioned, a Dr. Baylies and a Dr. Brauns: Hersey Baylies. M.D. 1799-1874) is listed in a New York Directory for 1827 as" attending physician to The New York Female Asyl

The Ledger hails from the back storage inventory of a recently closed bookstore in Pasadena. Expenses are described by their date. Amount and nature. Andrew McNally, the founder of the Ranch died in 1904. Even though he had handed over operations to his son in law Edwin Neff and Nettie McNally, his daughter, he still maintained some control and received substantial monthly profits from the Ranch up to the time of his sudden death, that is according

1812-1839 BOOTHBAY MAINE BLACKSMITH'S ACCOUNT BOOK, WILLIAM M. COBB LEDGER No. 1
THIS LEATHER BOUND LEDGER IS FROM PRE STATEHOOD MAINE. You are bidding on one 227 page( double sided) plus index of 7 pages with 193 names) leather bound account book dated 1812 to 1839. Front paper on inside cover says: William M. Cobb Ledger No. 1" Then there is a seven page index listing alphabetically the people whose accounts are inside and on what page(s) those accounts are on. I just noticed that each page has a left and a right. Owed to him on the left, paid on the right. Each of those pages are numbered the same left and right. From what I can see this was a blacksmith. Many entries for shoeing horses; making nails; repairing chain. Hoes, flounder spear" and many other iron items. Also odd day work type jobs and things like"wintering two cows" Payments were in cash. Herring, pollock, potatoes, old farm implements, ... moreholabout(halibut? by"cash& 17 year old anchor" coal, etc. Very interesting group of items. Some Schooners on the list of clients but mostly individuals. Index has 193 names. A Samuel Adams is mentioned and his signature is there(see 2nd& 3rd pics) BUT IT IS NOT FOUNDING FATHER SAM ADAMS as founding father Sam Adams died in 1803 before issuance of this ledger. Boothbay is mentioned on loose receipts as seen in last picture. There is also a legal document commanding the Sheriff of Lincoln County Massachusetts(Maine was then part of Massachusetts-Maine became a State in 1820) to"attach goods or estate of William M Cobb of Boothbay" in order to settle a debt. It is dated 1817. It can be seen in second last picture. Old laid paper. Old ink, old script. It is leather bound. Very important and interesting old historical ledger. As I had time I added names of the people mentioned starting from the front of the ledger to the back. Actually the first one is 1811 a little earlier than I thought. I may have middle initials incorrect as his capital M and W look the same. NAMES LISTED: William Trask. Joseph Morse, Andrew M. Cobb, Jeremiah Beath, Samuel Rackleff

E. D. Abell * Rindge NH New Hampshire handwritten ledger account book 1830s rare
Hand-written ledger/ record book from the 1830s which belonged to E. D. Abell with his name written in the front. I believe was from Rindge New Hampshire. He was a doctor. And he is listed in the New Hampshire Register and Farmer's Almanac as being a Postmaster. He became a doctor not long before this book was started. So I presume the ledger records his early work or pay; all the people listed in the book are doctors, including Dr. Capt. Eastman of Wilmot; Dr. Russel Ray of Danbury; Dr. Amos Sleeper of Springfield; Dr. Henry Flanders; Dr. Luther Bullock; Dr. Rebecca Greely; Dr. Nehemiah Smith; Dr. Joseph Loverain of Prescott Hill; Dr. David Smiley; Dr. James Brailey; Dr. Capt. Bebiah Bowen; Dr. Adam Blackman of Danbury; and many others. There is also a promissory note from Robert Fowler for $3.00 The book has a leather spine which is ... morea little chipped. Thus, this is an early view into activities at that time, with the Carlton name prominent in Wauchula ranching, banking, and politics. The letter book has 446 pages as handwritten copies of 495 pages total in the book. Most were written by C. W. Carlton. Although a few were written by W. Wells. Because this is a copy book, the pages are on"onionskin-like" paper, very fragile, and sometimes difficult to read. Nevertheless, it is an important and interesting account of business and political activities in ... morethe area at that time. Overall, the ledger is stable with some repair done, but it needs preservation as an historical artifact of importance. Please ask any questions prior to the end of bidding. As we have a no-return policy. New Jersey residents required to pay 7% state sales tax. Thanks for looking! Check out our other items!

1825-1826 Rare Ledger Lesson Book: Joseph Hancock, Jr. MA (?)
Here is a rare and unique item! This is a hand-written lesson book dealing with arithmetic functions and their application to business. Intended to prepare the student for a career as a merchant or business entrepreneur. The cover identifies the student and date as Joseph Hancock, Jr. 12-30-1825, and the back cover identifies the date of 3 mo. 11 day 1826, thus suggesting that Mr. Hancock completed this lesson book in a little more than three months. We believe that this book originated in Massachusetts, since it was found with other material from that area. The book is 12 1/2" x 8" and contains 44 pages, although some pages have been cut out and portions of some are still found with the book. Some repairs have been made with archival tape, and the pages are fragile but bound. As the photo shows, the softbound cover does have some ... morerips, tears, and missing portions. However, the book is in generally good condition, especially given it's age and the fact that it was worked in for at least a three-month period! The handwriting is superb, illustrative of a bygone age. Great collectible for today's historian or educator! Please ask any questions before the end of bidding. As we have a no-return policy. New Jersey residents required to pay 7% state sales tax. Thanks for looking! Please see our other listings!

ANTIQUE STORE/FARM LEDGER Napa Valley & Nipomo CA 1880 HANDWRITTEN Account Book
ANTIQUE HANDWRITTEN LEDGER This old ledger was found at a Santa Maria. CA estate sale. It has 190+ pages full of handwritten entries. It appears to be a combination of a ledger for a store, hotel, farm, and household expenses. There is a lot of mention of Napa Valley and Nipomo, CA. I believe the owner of this book had a farm(grew apricots, blueberries, and peaches. and had boarders who also ate at their home. there are lists of people who stayed and how many nights and number of meals. The first date I see is 1880. Inside the cover. It is signed W.H. Grigsby, Nipomo. Jan. 1894 S.L.O. Co. California. The next page is signed Will Grigsby"For the year of 1880 Day Book" and"William H. Grigsby, Napa, Calif. Napa Soda Springs" The next page apeears to be a list of names with page number(presumably a contents index to certain ... moreaccounts) The last date I see is 1916. Some other clues to owner: Moved to Soda Canon Road(Napa) Nov. 1887.to SLO June 10. 1891.Nipomo Dec. 14, 1891. Some Nipomo names that I see as boarders and expenses: Will Dana. Dave Castro, Joe Dominguez. Some accounts listed(Napa? McClelland& Co. John Sandercock, the Bank of Napa, Whitman, Cain& Mitchell(S.F. 1886) W.E. Tufts, R.H. Barkway, A.D. Porter, Gimmel& Co. J. Garvin, Moody(Napa City) It looks like in the early 1900s- there are a lot of farming expenses mentioned. Mostly regarding growing apricots, peaches and blackberries. There is a page called"China Labor" and it details how many men they hired each day and their pay. There are also many pages with farm expenses and household expenses. Book is in worn condition. But is still solidly bound. A few torn pages, but appears to be complete. Powered by The free listing tool. List your items fast and easy and manage your active items.
