Charles& Albert Boni, who sold the Whitman Candy Company the idea of including one of their little books as a bonus in each box of their candy, beginning in 1916. The books were so popular they later offered a set of"Thirty World's Greatest Masterpieces" as well as a special book rack to hold people's collections. The little books. Originally with leather covers, were 3" x 3 3/4" with"rap" edges- the cover bends at the edges to protect the interior pages. The covers are embossed with the title and author's name on the front within a decorative border, and along the spine as well, with the Little Leather Library shield on the back. In very nice condition. Slight wear to cover, the first 2 pages are darkened through contact with the cover; the interior pages are fine- no problems, quite light in color and perfectly legible. The binding was fine until I tried to take a picture of the first page and managed to separate the pages from the spine. The pages are firmly attached top each other. The issue is a water stain at the top of the first page which reaches through many of the following pages, although to an increasingly lesser degree- the stain doesn't reach all the way through the pages, but there it is. The pages are bound together, no problem, but they have become separated from the cover where they had been glued. I've left it that way for someone more qualified than me to deal with. ANTIQUE 1847 MINIATURE BOOK "LITTLE WILL, THE ALPINE CROSS AND JESUS' SEAT"
This charming 29-page miniature religious book. Entitled"Little Will, The Alpine Cross and Jesus' Seat" was published in New York in 1847 by the American Tract Society, a well known producer of religious books in the mid-1800s. The purple cloth cover is one of several colors that were used for this lovely miniature; it exists in brown and green as well. The purple seems to be rarer. Though this is just an observation and not confirmed. It's in good condition for a miniature of this age. The cover shows wear. Especially the gilt writing, and there is slight water damage on the upper right front. There are a few air bubbles in the rear cover. The spine and corners are in good shape. Some of the pages are loose and attached only with one thread. The gilt on the page edges is intact. It is 2 3/4 by 2 inches.
