1916 FUNK & WAGNALLS Mental Efficiency Series set of 10 in original wood box
Here’s a great find just the way it sat on a bookshelf in the attic of the estate. This is the 10 volume hard cover set of the 1916 Mental Efficiency Series by Funk and Wagnalls. The set is still in the original wood shipping crate. Check out the 22 cent postage on this beautiful 100 year old finger joint box. Books 1 and 10 are missing the dust covers. The other 8 all have them. At some point in time there was some water exposure and there are water stains here and there. There is no mold or mildew. The spines are tight and aside from some water marks. Books are in overall decent shape for almost 100 years of age. What’s also interesting is the books contained 8 original leaflet inserts advertising other F&W products. Each of the volumes is a collection unto itself and entitled with a theme. So to speak, to wit: 1, ADVENTURE; 2. ROMANCE; 3, MYSTERY; 4, ... moreLOVE; 5, DRAMA; 6, COURAGE; 7, WOMEN; 8, MEN; 9. GHOSTS; 10, HUMOR; and each contains ten(10) stories grouped around that theme. In the interest of full disclosure I should note that these are not hard-and-fast categories and the astute reader may note the presence of women outside the confines of Volume 7 or men outside the confines of Volume 8. To site just two typical representative examples which create such a jarring cognitive dissonance. They include some well-known stories. Some lesser-known stories by well-known authors, some more obscure stories which deserve to be better-known. And some, perhaps, which are justifiably obscure. The inherent variability of buckwheat pancakes notwithstanding. I hasten to emphasize their portability. They can be transported in a large pocket or handbag. Tucked in a breastplate or garter, or stashed behind the Boodles in the wet bar of the Silver Cloud for ready availability just in case the batteries run low in the midst of a game of Angry Birds. This auction is for the Standard Dictionary of the English Language. Volume I(A-L) and Volume II(M-Z) These books measure approximately 12 and 1/2 inches by 10 inches. Both volumes are tooled leather in an Art Nouveau pattern with gilt embossing. Volume I is paginated. With the last numerated page being 1060; the last numerated page of Volume II is 2318. The books are published by Funk& Wagnalls Company. Volume I was published in 1894 and Volume II was published in 1895. They were printed in the United States. Marbled end pages are present in both volumes. And marbling is also noted to the ends of the pages on all sides. Letter dividers(those black tabs with the letters) are present on both books.
