The book was published by Theodore Burling in New York City(265 Bowery and 61 Fulton St) and printed at the same location by H.R. Piercy. The book is subtitled"Containing Original Essays, Extracts From New Works; Historical Narratives; Biographical Memoirs; Sketches of Society; Topographical Descriptions; Novels and Tales; Anecdotes; Poetry, Original and Selected; The Spirit of the Public Journals, Discoveries in the Arts and Sciences, Useful Domestic Hints, c. c. c. This book was in my father-in-law's collection. He was an antique dealer/collector and a World War II veteran. It was procured by him in upstate New York many years ago. The book contains a myriad of literary publishing of historical significance ... morefrom that era including essays regarding the Revolutionary War. The cover is well worn as you can see in the third picture. The title page in the first picture is partially torn(though complete) and that page and the Note to the Reader page is hanging onto the spine of the book with 1 binding string. Then pages through page 8 are missing. However. Pages 9 through the end page(page 749) are fully bound in the book and each page is legible and intact and readable, though a few of the pages are a bit stained. On September 14, 1889, he came to Johnstown and entered into a partnership with his brother, W. W. Porch, in the piano business, the firm being known as the Porch Brothers Piano Company. Their first business location was in the Park Building, on Locust Street, a temporary structure built after the flood. Later they moved to where the U. S. Bank Building now stands. The partnership continued until 1897, when the partnership was dissolved and George W. For a time Mr. Porch conducted a branch store at Altoona. In 1903 George W. Porch opened a piano store at Ebensburg, which he successfully conducted until 1908, when he returned to Johnstown and purchased his old business from his brother Clark. This store is an exclusive piano store and has a well established business. Mr. Porch is a representative for the following piano companies: Cable-Nelson, Chickering, Milton, Sohmer, Hazelton Bros. The book is 293 pages long and measures approximately 5 and 3/4 inches by 7 and 7/8 inches. The cover is dark green cloth boards with gold printing. Condition: Wear to cover including spotting. RARE 1800's Original Sewing Instruction Book Fabric swatches sampler handsewn
No doubt this is a one of a kind. Personal SEWING INSRUCTION sampler book which includes actual fabric swatches(cotton, flannel and cashmere) w/ all examples(models) being handsewn for illustration of various sewing techniques of the time. The pictures do not do this justice! I have never seen such tiny stitches so masterfully executed! True artistry! Typical 1800's smaller SCRAP BOOK has gray covers with decorated gilt title blind stamped on front. Spine is chipped and missing a piece of the bottom corner. The owner/artists name(Dorothy Bennett) is neatly penned inside front cover. Pages are typical cream colored scrapbook paper that have naturally darkened some over time. Left side of page has the directions neatly penned in cursive with the actual example of the work. On the right hand page being kept in place by old metal paperclips(some ... morerusty) that probably should be removed but that is up to the new owner. That is one of the"issues" Another issue includes the 3 fabrics that have some insect damage, which does not ruin the models completely, as there is still much left to be admired. The only other issue I see is that there is slight separation between pages"Model no IX" and the coinciding example which just happens to be the one fabric w/ the most damage. Otherwise all pages are intact and together in the binding, without tears, holes or soiling but needs to be handled w/ care.
