It is quite lovely. The note-paper was attached to the front free-endpaper by a couple of 3/4” x 3/4” stamp collector type hinge mounts. The mounts are no longer present. But they have left their stain on the front free-endpaper and a matching stain to the blank backside of the Signed Note-Paper. The mounts did no damage, other than leaving their age mark. The signed stationery/ note-paper is now laid-in loosely. Also laid-in ... morethe book is an unrelated note-card from the Consulate General of Switzerland to“Pierre” Dated 7.3.74. It is hand-written in German. I believe it has nothing to do with the Crawford book, but just happens to be laid-in this book. The book came from the estate of PIERRE RHEIN and PATRICIA MITAU. Who had three children all of whom took their father’s last name. Pierre Rhein was born in Switzerland. Patricia Mitau was born in San Francisco. Her mother was Marjorie Fleishhacker whose father was Herbert Fleishhacker, the famous Banker, Financier, Early California Baseball Team Owner, Bon Vivant, and Philanthropist. The Fleishhacker family is a very well-known San Francisco family. Any connection Pierre Rhein had with Joan Crawford might have come from the acquaintances of the family of his partner, Patricia Mitau, but I don’t really know. Bound in deep red-brown finely pebbled cloth over bevel-edged boards. With simple blindstamped lines to the covers. Spine with fancy gilt titles and designs. With 12 tipped-in engravings. EXTREMELY RARE. OCLC lists 8 holdings" ~ we have only found three. Valued at $350, $470 and $500, all in similar condition. This is the life and times of Thomas Edmondston(1825-1846) Shetland Islands Botanist and Naturalist. He compiled the first known list of Shetland plants at the age of 11. Herald" The Pacific and the Lonely Grave. CONDITION: Near VG: Binding is solid. Not shaken. Inner joints intact, no loose pages or starting signatures. TEXT is essentially clean and neat, with very pale edge-toning; but we see widely scattered tiny dark fox-spots here and there throughout. The plates are printed on a different type of paper stock; some show pale foxing, some don't. No sign of former owner. COVERS show only light overall rubbing, mainly to the edges. TIPS are worn to the cardboard. SPINE shows splits at the extremes of head& tail. Note the 3/16" hole at the front hinge. Title gilt is still bright! They are still intact with no pages missing. The pages are clear and beautiful and chocked full of learning material. These Portfolios were meant for teaching and learning Art. 119 of the prints are beautiful in shiny. Glossy colors like photos and are Frame-able. The print#37 has a small 1 3/8” tear but still in beautiful appearance. The tear extends across the border and on to the actual picture only 3/8” A photo is provided. These 120 Prints could be framed and easily fetch $25 each; that’s 120 x $25 = $3000. I thought about it but really don’t want to break up the 10 Portfolio set. To me it’s a rare find and a treasure. The prints white borders have aged and show an antique tent but keep in mind that if and when they are framed the border will be covered and only the picture will show. The Prints measure: 12 3/8” Wide x 9 ½” Tall Please view all photos as they are a valuable part of the description. Pictures truly are worth a thousand words!
