FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT LEDGER. This amazing volume was compiled by Hook& Ladder Company No. 19 which at the time operated from Ogden Avenue in the Bronx section of New York City. The location where it was originally organized. Entries run from May 6th through August 15th, 1887, and cover day-to-day activities of the firehouse in fascinating detail. Massive folio contains some 500 numbered pages. Each chock full of handwritten entries including fire calls and alarms, ambulance calls, roll calls, company drills, meal breaks, caring and exercising of the horses, trips to the blacksmith shop, equipment maintenance, supply purchases, etc. This is one of those vintage gems which should be seen to be fully appreciated. Ladders and buckets were financed through the collection of fines for dirty chimneys and a fire watch was established consisting of eight wardens which were drawn from the male population. An organization known as the"prowlers" but given the nickname"the rattle watch" patrolled the streets with buckets, ladders and hooks from nine in the evening until dawn looking for fires. Leather shoe buckets, 250 in all, were manufactured by local Dutch shoemakers in 1658, and these"bucket brigades" are regarded as the beginning of the New York Fire Department. In 1664 New Amsterdam became a British settlement and was renamed New York. The first New York fire brigade entered service in 1731 equipped with two hand-drawn pumpers which had been transported from London. England. These two pumpers formed Engine Company 1 and Engine Company 2. This four-panel brochure tells“The Story of the Loss and Recovery of the Manuscript of a Posthumous Novel by Frank Norris. Godey's Lady's Book- bound volume containing all 12 monthly issues for 1858. Each issue includes a color fashion plate. A black& white engraving, and craft illustrations which are usually color as well. Plus many black& white illustrations throughout. All plates are present except one b& w engraving. The front cover is lacking and the first couple plates are de tached. Much wear to the spine& rear cover. Otherwise condition is good. With articles on fashion. Home designs, poetry, and many long-forgotten crafts(a whole article about how to make feather flowers is just one example) and more. FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT MATHEMATICS BOOK. This terrific early volume was compiled from 1839-42 by Calvin Shaffner at Lititz Academy. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Volume is remarkable in every respect. From its sheer size[nearly 300 pages of handwritten entries] and the broad range of subjects covered, to the neatness of the hand writing and artistic flare of the compiler. This is one of those rare gems that should be seen to be fully appreciated. One of the more striking features is the fraktur inspired calligraphy which adorns volume throughout. Text contains numerous titles and page headings elaborately applied with an artistic flare seldom seen in early math cypher books. Another notable feature is the scope of subjects receiving detailed attention. Ranging from mathematics[mensuration of superfices, solids, cylindrical ... moreshapes, arithmetic, rule of three, vulgar fractions, algebra, cubical measure, etc. to the trades[bricklayer's work, mason's work, carpenter's work, slater's and tiler's work, plasterer's work, painter's and glazier's work, vaulted and arched roof's, etc. to business applications[interest, fellowship, loss and gain, custom house allowances, book keeping, journals, ledgers, invoices, expenses, etc. Every page is exploited to the fullest extent. In quarter board fashion with titles and graphic designs blind stamped, brown on tan and gold on the red quarter board portions, page tops are gold. There is light soiling to the surfaces, however, the cover illustrations is still quite pronounced. Edge wear is noted primately at the ends of the spine and at the corners with some spits and wearing through, but no excessive fraying or fabric loss. For a volume of near 120 years, it is still very solid, very attractive. The interior reveals the contents to be clean and still firm with all pages firmly bound and hinges intact. Age toning is modest with a couple foxing spots on the leading edge of half title and on the tissue covering the frontispiece. A slight forward lean is noted ... morebut overall. It is a clean, attractive with no ownership indications and no marks, creases or tears. INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER. Excerpt) While spending the winter of 1889 and 1890 in Southern California and San Francisco. I was repeatedly asked if I should not visit‘the Islands’ before going away; and was told that‘A run down to the Islands is the thing, you know; everybody goes to the Islands. We have for your viewing and bidding pleasure a highly collectible antique hardback bound historical book. It is titled Remember the Alamo By Amelia E. Barr. The book has a copyright date of 1888 by DODD. MEAD AND COMPANY who were also the publishers in New York. We have photoed the hardback cover, the Title page with the picture of the Alamo Fort, the Content page and several other pages to give interested parties some idea of the content and conditions contained within the book. Sheet 213 and 214 has a bent upper corner. Pages 124 and 125 has some light stains. The book is complete and readable with none of the pages torn, loose or missing. There are 431 of them. The front inside cover, first inner page, back inner page and back inner cover all have children's scribbling in lead pencil. The spine is tight. Antique 1909 FLEMING'S Vest Pocket VETERINARY ADVISOR Book Booklet
Antique Fleming's Vest Pocket Veterinary Advisor. It has a soft cover with 192 pages and measures 3" x 6" The latest copyright date is 1909. It is full of period veterinary facts& illustrations and is in very good condition for its age and use. The cover shows creases and the pages show light yellowing. There are no missing or torn pages but the frontispiece page shows some holes from silverfish. The rest of the pages are excellent.
