1917 hand written diary Berne NY area - Rensselaerville
This diary is a great slice of early 1900's life in rural/small town New York. Diary measures approximately 6-3/4" x 8-1/4" There is no cover and the first/last page is detached from the rest of the diary. Remainder. While worn and a little frayed is firmly attached. About the first 15 pages are written in black ink and is easily read. Balance of diary is written in a blue/green ink that bled through to the other side. This makes the diary harder to read but, as with many older diaries, once you get the hang of it, the diary is quite legible. Diary covers the year of 1917 from January through December. I couldn't determine name of writer but plenty of other names are. These include: Olney and Carrie. Leslie, Ida, Josie(7 yrs 5 mos on 2/6. Often mentioned attending school or Sunday School) Maccabes(Macabbee) Fred Hoch'er(Hochstrasser) ... moreJamie Dearstyne, Harvey Gathen(died 1/9/1917 Rensselaerville, Episcopal Cemetery) I did some research especially using the Berne Historical Project and believe two stores frequently mentioned are Hochstrasser's Store and Lyon and Tompkins both located in Hamlet of Berne. At the back there are pages of the diary listing prices of various items. There is much writing about day to day chores and activities. Going for milk Bringing over phonograph for entertainment Having a dance in the new hall Golden wedding celebration Teacher's convention in Albany Crystal Lake picnic Putting in ice Measles in R. Ville Mailing muskrat skins getting shoes at Hochstrasser Boarding house burned Thompson Lake Some towns and locations mentioned include Rensselaerville or R.Ville. L.A. or L.C. Hall(drama held here) Albany, Altamont, Crystal Lake, Schenectady, West Bernice And finally. Some dates listed toward the back of the diary: Mrs. A. Barber 64 Mar 1917 Bertie 41 May 9. 1917 Married 20 years June. 1917 Doras Schoonmaker Sept. 9. 1917 Frank and Libbie married 5 years 12/5/17 There is a lot more information yet to be discovered and I hope you have fun doing it. 2 Antique Ledgers Hand Written Finances 1893 - 1924 Plattsburgh NY New York NR
Fresh from a local estate sale and offered for your consideration is Two(2) Antique Hand-Written Ledgers Based on the stack of receipts inside of one of the books, along with some other references noted, I believe these ledgers were kept by the owner of Dock& Coal Co. Formerly of Saranac Lake. NY and later located in Plattsburgh. NY. But I can not say for sure. The name printed inside is Leonard A Lewis From what I am able to tell. It looks like an account of personal household expenses as well as farm and business expenses. Records are kept with prices for an assorment of sundries and bills. As well as the sale of hale. Oats, potatoes and other crops, and records of labor expenses and wages(10 cents an hour! The first book(the tall one) appears to have records from 1893- 1919, and the second book looks to cover the period from 1920- ... more1924. Both books have some blank pages in them as well(more in the taller book than in the other one) But when you are looking through them. If you hit a blank period do not assume that is all that is in there because both books also have skipped pages and then records resume again. Most of the writing is pretty legible! Excellent look at the local economy and prices around the turn of the century. Both offered for one low starting bid! VERY OLD C.1800'S LETTER Hand WRiTTen Quill AMzI NORTON SIGNED Signed Amsi Norton aug 21 1842 Amsi apears to be upset. Is mentioned Going to a funeral England France i think amongst other things. his views on the millennium for some reason disagreeing with temporal millennium or something like this. May be a letter to his brother possibly. QUICK BIO. A. B. W. Norton. Known in Plainview and country around as Squire Norton, from his protracted service as justice of the peace, was born October 30, 1818, in the town of Guilford, Chenango county, of Connecticut parents, being descended from grandparents of old revolutionary fame. He enjoyed the privileges of a common school education. And started in business at the age of fourteen years. At Richford, Tioga county, New York, in the county clerks's office, he commenced assisting his former ... moreteacher in transcribing the records. Following this he experienced a series of changes for ten years, and then went to Brooklyn, New York, as clerk in the employ of Freeman& Co. and from there, after a short term, to Sussex county, New Jersey, at the solicitation of his uncle, to spend Christmas. In 1846 he was for a time in Pleasant Valley, in the same state, and then through the instrumentality of his friend Fisher, a New York bookkeeper, when clerking in that city. In 1847 he, with his brother, settled in Woodstock, McHenry county, Illinois, and continued here in business for ten years. On July 4, 1857, he came, in company with Wm. Kimberly, to Plainview, Wabasha county, Minnesota, and settled on a quarter-section(160) acres of land, in what is known as section 6. His two children, daughters by his wife whom he lost in Woodstock, followed him about a year after, and one is now keeping house for her father, and the other, married to E. A. Pomeroy, resides opposite on property presented to her by the judge. In 1860 Mr. Norton was elected as town clerk against William Stone, and he immediately set about straightening the records. In 1859 he built the first substantial buil
Hand Written Civil War Era Journal 1861-1880 Ft Sumter England Threat Pres Elec
Up for bid is a 1861 through 1880 hand written journal by Jacob Rhodes from Indiana. The journal has approximately 70 pages front and back of Jacob's writing's. He was a preacher of some sort and much of his writings pertain to the Bible. God, and the condition of humanity. He wrote down many of his sermons. On December 4, 1861 he wrote a journal entry about the Civil War, specifically the Ft. Sumter attack by the"Rebels" South Carolinians and how the fight lasted several days and then they trampled the flag and replaced it with the Palmetto flag. A few days later he wrote about England threatening to start a war with the U.S unless they return two traitors to England named Mason and Slidell who were taken by Captain Wilkes. Jacob also wrote a letter, which was inside his journal, to a friend in 1880 and mentioned the Presidential ... moreelection asking what his friend thought about it and that he hopes the right man wins. There are a lot of interesting entries but I did not have time to read them all so I am highlighting what I found when I thumbed through the book. The first few pages of the book are account entries from 1850s concerning items he bought and sold, the remainder of the book is crammed full of his personal writings. The book is 12"x8" and the cover has wear that can be seen in the photos. The inside pages have expected discoloration and some stains but is in overall very good condition. Questions are always welcome. Thank you. PAYMENT& SHIPPING We accept payment through PayPal. Miniature Hand Written ANTIQUE Fortune teller BOOK 1834 Hornellsville NY Quaker
Very Rare 4" x 5" handmade booklet written by Thirsa aka Thirya L.Grover.1836, 1837. 50 colourful pages tied with original ribbon! The booklet has two features; it begins with pages of poetry autographs to Thirsa.Dated 1836 1837, the second part approx 2/3 of the booklet consists of the MASH game numbered answers and fortune telling. MASH. A very popular game, has been played for many years. This game not only predicts the name of your future love, but also what your life with this person will be like. This is a two player game: one player will have his or her future"told" while the other player serves as the scribe, writing down pertinent information. Traditionally MASH has six categories that must be filled out. With two or more items per category. This earlier version is much more elaborate and most likely based on ... morean 18th Century version( since his one comes from so early in the 19th century. MASH is a two-player paper-and-pencil game. Commonly played by preteens intended to predict one's future. The name is an abbreviation of"mansion. Apartment, shack/street/shed/sewers, and house" 1] The game revolves around a set of headings or categories. Such as: cars, kinds of homes, spouses, pets, and how many children they will have, but many people add additional categories. MASH' is played by two players: Player 1. About whom the descriptions in the game are meant to pertain, and Player 2. Game play· The game starts by either player writing out the title MASH at the top of a piece of paper. Both players contribute to writing a list of categories in a column· Each player thinks of two items for each category. And writes them to the right of the category. If you are Player 2, it is a little comical if you put things down the other person might not enjoy. Player 2 then begins to draw a swirl. Player 1 says"Stop" At a time she chooses, and counts the number of lines in the swirl. Player 1 counts each item down the page. And crosses off the word that they land on(

Antique Hand Written Manuscript / Store Ledger From 1890-1937 Vintage Rare
Hand Written Manuscript/ Store Ledger From The Late 1890's- 1937 This is a store ledger of some sort. Showing dates from the 1890's to 1937. It is in the original leather or suede binding and has many entries. I am not sure why, but it looks as if only the middle portion was used(entries mostly start on pages#300 or greater with only a handful earlier) Of the 600+ pages, I would say less than 100 have entries. If you own an Antique store or other business, you could set it on your countertop and use this for your own bookkeeping or simply a novelty. The overall dimensions measure 13 1/4" tall x 9" wide x 2 1/2" thick and weighs a whopping 6 1/2 pounds! From what I can see. The ledger does not say who the proprietor of the store was, neither the name of the store nor the location. The original leather/ suede covers are ... moreworn and the leather is peeling in places, the spine is mostly perished and the binding is fragile. The back or bottom is much nicer than the front as noted in the photos It measures The ledger is somewhat fragile. Yet still basically sound and present. Ink is clear and dark, paper is strong. An amazing relic from a store in the 1890s. A true piece of history and a rare, one-of-a-kind piece of Americana. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Buyer to pay the super low shipping cost of $3.99 shipping within the continental USA. Paypal payments only. Good luck bidding!

Very Rare 1844-1863 HAND WRITTEN OBSTETRICAL LEDGER CASE BOOK--New York City
Very Rare 1844-1863 HAND WRITTEN OBSTETRICAL LEDGER CASE BOOK-New York City Very rare and important obstetrical ledger. Handwritten by doctors detailing the labor, delivery& outcomes of the women that they attended between 1844 and 1863 at the New York Female Asylum For Lying-In- Women. Over 300 entries on about 70 pages starting in 1844 with the last year being 1863. Most entries with normal deliveries are brief with the mothers name. Nativity, age, marital status, pregnancies, important occurrences during pregnancy, date onset of labor, presentation, occurrences during/after labor, date/time termination of labor, stages, sex, occurrences to child and remarks. Cases which were complicated are detailed with longer notes and later in the ledger some cases took one or two pages. There are at least two different writers. The last(in the ... more1860's) being a little harder to read. Someone more familiar with the medical/obstetrical terminology of the times would probably have an easier time reading this. I believe that this is from The New York Female Asylum For Lying-In-Women located at 85 Marion in Brooklyn during this period. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH. HERE'S HOW I CAME TO THIS CONCLUSION: First. Because of the details, use of Chloroform, ergot, etc. and an entry"Midwife had been with her for 2 days" it's pretty clear that this was written by doctors and not midwives. Second. Because of the orderly and neat entries and the frequent poor outcomes and the writers' consultation with other doctors I feel certain that these entries took place in a hospital setting. Third. Because of two locations mentioned, Eastchester and Scarsdale next to two of the women(and I'm assuming they were mentioned because they were from"out of town" that the location of this hospital was in or near New York City. Fourth. Two doctors are mentioned, a Dr. Baylies and a Dr. Brauns: Hersey Baylies. M.D. 1799-1874) is listed in a New York Directory for 1827 as" attending physician to The New York Female Asyl

IMPORTANT HISTORICAL HAND WRITTEN & SIGNED 3 Pg LETTER BY P T BARNUM 1869
Up for auction comes this historical letter written by P T Barnum in 1869 at the time he was writing his book forty years recollections. This letter was wrote to a man named Stuart to go over an account that took place aboard the steamer Falcon on it’s way from Havana Cuba to New Orleans. On board was James Gordon Bennett Jr. and his wife. Editor and publisher of the New York Herald. Also on board was Henry Bennett who was an agent and worked for Barnum. James Gordon Bennett wrote some bad reviews in his paper for Jenny Lind and that angered Henry Bennett to the point that he wanted to kill James by way of throwing him overboard and drowning him. Barnum stopped him in a drunken rage that night aboard the ship and made public an account of it in his book, Chapter 20 page 120. The 3 page hand written letter by Barnum goes into greater detail ... moreabout that night. James Bennett was going forward on the ship to play with his monkey that he bought for his wife in Cuba( he was drunk most likely as where others) this is when Henry told the others he was going forward to through him over. There is more to the letter but this is the purpose of the letter, to get the account accurate for the writing of his book. The letter is written on his personal stationary written at Waldemere Bridgeport Connecticut July 13th 1869. At top of letter there is a written notation“ fro Mr. or Mrs. P. T. Barnum given me by Mrs. Paine HTL 1891. HTL is Hanna T. Lawrence of Bay Side Long Island. Hanna was from the prominent Bay Side Lawrence Family. I think her father or brother was Henry E. Lawrence, the son of Ann Townsend(fl.1802-1830s) and Judge Effingham Lawrence. You can do some more research going to the web site of the Lawrence family cemetery in Bayside. This 3 page letter is tip in a scrap book that belonged to Hanna Townsend Lawrence. I bought this scrap book from an estate who’s family came from a very prominent New York Family. The family was connected to Joseph& Henry Lawrence, founder and president of the United States Trust Co

ANTIQUE HAND WRITTEN GEN. STORE LEDGER 1859-60 & DIARY HENDERSON COUNTY KY. RARE
| | ANTIQUE HAND WRITTEN GEN. STORE LEDGER 1859-60& DIARY HENDERSON COUNTY KY. RARE, THIS OLD I ASSUME GENERAL STORE LEDGER SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN CONTROLLED& WRITTEN BY THE PRIEST FAMILY IN HENDERSON COUNTY KENTUCKY. IT HAS AN ALPHABETIC INDEX IN FRONT WITH HAND WRITTEN NAMES OF ACCOUNTS MANY MANY. PERHAPS MISSING THE D& E SECTION HOWEVER NOT TO WORRY ALL OF THE ACTUAL ENTRIES FOR PERSONS ARE STILL INTACT. I BELIEVE THE STORE LEDGER WAS FROM 1859& 1860 AND DATED ON MOST PAGES AS SUCH. THEN AROUND 1911 FRANCIS WILLIAM PRIEST STARTED USING LITTLE USED OR UNUSED PAGES AS A DIARY PROBABLY INTO 1924 ABSOLUTELY LOADED WITH DAILY INFO AND INSIGHT TO THE TIME AND PLACE WHO WAS THERE AND WHAT THEY DID. WEDDINGS, HOUSE BURNING, CHURCHES, HORSES BORN, LAW BREAKING, DEATHS YOU NAME IT. I THINK MAYBE WILLIAM PRIEST WAS THE PROPRIETER IN 1859-60 ... moreALSO NAMES WRITTEN IN BOOK ARE J.E. PRIEST, PAM PRIEST, FRANCIS WILLIAM PRIEST WHO KEPT AND USED THE BOOK. MORE PRIEST NAMES AND MANY OTHERS OF COURSE INSIDE. PROBABLY SOME OF THE MEN WENT OFF TO THE CIVIL WAR THE YEAR AFTER 1860 WHICH MAY EXPLAIN IT STOPPING THEN. ONE WOULD HAVE TO RESEARCH THE NAMES. IF YOU HAVE ANY ANCESTRY IN THIS AREA DURING THESE YEARS I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND BIDDING ON THIS IT IS 1 OF A KIND FOR SURE. IT IS HUGE ABOUT 16 X 10 X 2 1/2 AND WEIGHS IN AT 8 LBS 12 OZS. I WILL SHIP IT MEDIA MAIL AT ACTUAL COST TO SHIP. THIS IS A TREASURE FOR SURE. CONDITION IS ROUGH FROM COVERS AND BINDING STANDPOINT FALLING APART FOR SURE BUT THE PAGES ARE VERY READABLE AND LOADED WITH THE HISTORY OF HENDERSON COUNTY. MAYBE CLOSEST TO HEBBARDSVILLE AT LEAST DURING SOME TIME. BUT MANY TOWNS ARE IN THE TALKS. I HAVE PHOTOGRAPHED A SAMPLING. OTHER TOWNS IN THE AREA THAT MAY BE INTERESTED ARE HENDERSON KY. CORYDON KY. ROBARDS KY. SCUFFLETOWN KY. SPOTTSVILLE KY. PHILPOT KY. EVANSVILLE KY. EVANSVILLE IN. OWENSBORO KY. OHIO RIVER AND GREEN RIVER. I HOPE SOMEONE WILL FIND THIS HANDWRITTEN HISTORY PRICELESS. Original hand-written and signed epigram "Outwitted" by Edwin Markham 1933
The full Epigram"Outwitted" hand-written and signed by Edwin Markham(born Charles Edward Anson Markham April 23. 1852– March 7, 1940) covered in glass and incorporated into a hanging frame, about 4 by 6 inches in size. Edwin Markham was an American poet, and from 1923 to 1931 he was Poet Laureate of Oregon. As recounted by literary biographer William R. Nash. between publications, Markham lectured and wrote in other genres, including essays and nonfiction prose. He also gave much of his time to organizations such as the Poetry Society of America, which he established in 1910. In 1922, at the conclusion to the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial, Markham read a revised version of his poem, Lincoln the Man of the People. Markham rose to fame as a poet with the publication of"The Man with the Hoe. which was inspired by a Francois ... moreMillet woodcut of the same name. On New Year's Eve of 1898, Markham read the poem at a party, which led to its publication in the San Francisco Examiner. Because Markham's populist views were in line with the social reform movements of the day. His poem became an overnight sensation. Markham also wrote a number of epigrams. Of which the best known is Outwitted. Throughout Markham's later life, many readers viewed him as an important voice in American poetry, a position signified by honors such as his election in 1908 to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Despite his numerous accolades, however, none of his later books achieved the success of the first two. This poem is dated November 1933. At The Poet's Garden, B.B.B. A little background on the Garden and what"B.B.B. stands for below: Edwin Markham dedicated the Poets Garden. Located in Ruth Le Prade's backyard at 1622 S. Spaulding Street, in April 1927 with the planting of a sycamore tree called the Song Tree in honor of Ruth Le Prade and a wisteria tree for Peace. There are also a few maps within the book. Including the"Wanderchart" and the owner traced the travels with a pen. The traveler departed NYC on the SS Caronia. Cunard White Star line. August 5th, 1950. The traveler departed Europe on the SS Mauretania. Cunard White Star line. Date not specified. The traveler describes dinner and dancing at night along the Caronia. Indenture 1797 March 25, Document Hand-Written Gallifer, Sharp, New Jersey Land
For your consideration. This incredible indenture outlining the purchase of a plot of New Jersey property in 1797. I have inscribed up to 9 lines of this document, see below. Condition is as seen in photos. This is pressed between mat glass to be able to see both sides of the document. This is in a solid, attractive frame with a carved pattern. This frame would have to be dismantled to remove the document. Evident on the document is where the wax seal was. This measures 18 1/8" X 25 1/8" and the frame is 2" thick. This Indenture. Made the twenty fifth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven between Thomas Gallifer of the township of Evesham in the county of Burlington and the state of New Jersey Taylor his wife of the one part and George Sharp of the Township County and state aforesaid ... moreTaylor of the other part witnefseth[sic] that the saie Thomas Gallifer for and in consideration of the sum of seventy five pounds gold or silver to him in hand paid or secured to be paid by the said George Sharp and that at or before the enscaling and delivery of these presents the receipt where of the said Thomas Gallifer doth hereby own can acknowledge himself fully paid and satisfied and thereof doth acquit exonerate and forever discharge the said George Sharp his heirs executors administrators and every of them by these presents hath granted bargained sold[two indistinguishable words here] released conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do freely cleanly and absolutely grant bargain sell. And so it goes on to detail the plot of land that starts at"a stone corner to Samuel Ballinger" fourteen degrees East. There are some words I'm not familiar with or that I might be misreading. What I have transcribed here is about one-fourth of the text on the front. There is a little sketch at the bottom which outlines the plot of land. This is signed my Thomas and Mary Gallifer. There are also the following signatures: Thomas Gaskill. William Sharp, and on the back,

Antique 1896 HAND WRITTEN DIARY JOURNAL ALLISON Family Muskingum County Ohio
Hello and Welcome to Our Auction. You are looking at an antique hand written diary or journal. It is from 1896. The covers are black and it has a fold over closure. There is a pocket in the back for receipts. Etc. It was written by a woman from the Allison family from Muskingum County Ohio. We purchased this with other family diaries at their estate sale in November. It doesn't have the name of the writer in the Journal, but she speaks of other family members. The hand is similar to the diaries we have listed by Sade Allison, but some of the penmanship it different. This one is 20+ years older than the other one, so her hand could have changed a little over time, or it is by another member of that family. I didn't read the entire thing, but browsed through some entries. She writes of daily chores, knitting, sewing, what the weather ... morewas like, what Mary made for dinner, selling butter, livestock, people that visit, going to church, reading, writing, travels to nearby towns to get and or sell supplies.
