1930s Handwritten US Travel Diary 4 Trips Train Bus California Grand Canyon MORE
This is a US Travel diary that represents four different trips taken by one woman in the 1930’s. Most of them have to do with her travels to the West Coast but one is to Washington D.C. She is either traveling by train or bus. Sometimes autos were taken to see the various sites when they reached their destination. She also was able to visit the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone Park. I don’t know her last name but the diary is to a“Jessie” from“Olive. There are a total of 135 handwritten pages and because there are so many I actually just sped read through the last part of the diary for times sake. Here are a few examples of her entries… 1932(She starts out leaving Painesville Ohio passing through Elyria. Oberlin, Toledo. Defiance. Marion. Anderson Indiana. Indianapolis. St. Louis, Effingham, Greenville, Kansas City, Salina Kansas and finally ... morereaching Denver where I start her quotes… June 14 th. Reached Denver Tuesday morning at 5:25. Had breakfast. Called Dr. Weaver and left at 7:30 Tues. A.M. Passed thru Pueblo, Trinidad, Colorado and over the Raton Pass, a most wonderful ride over the mountains down to Santa Fe where I wish I had stayed over. It was such an interesting place. We reached Albuquerque late Tuesday night where we were detained on account of tire trouble. Left here at 1:30 A.M. Here I left the young man from Mississippi who was on his way to the Philippines. The ride now for hours and hours was thru arid land. At Holbrook we saw petrified trees and at Winslow the Painted Desert. Which was very beautiful. Arrived at Flagstaff about noon Wednesday tired and dirty. Went with Miss Westman and Miss Bushman. Teachers from Chisholm Minn. to the“Ideal Hotel” where we had a hot bath and after resting for a time intended to go out to the Observatory but were so tired we just slept on until six. Thursday morning when we left there in a lovely Packard car and drove 85 miles to the Grand Canyon. On our way we saw one deer and immense fields of Purple Sage. Vintage National Geograhpic Book and it's Volume 45. Jan-June 1924. The book was from the public library in Orleans. Nebraska and does have some minor wear on the covers. One of 20 handsome half tone photo illustrated portfolios. With lots of history about the area, that I am listing on ebay. They were published by the Union Book& Publishing Company, Chicago& New York, early 1900's. They all have several large photos and many smaller ones pertaining to a certain part of the country. 12" by 14 1/2" 8 double sided pages. In good overall condition, just show their age a bit.
