CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH 1855 YANKEE HILL MINER'S LETTER WITH VERY GOOD CONTENT
An original hand written letter dated Yankee Hill. Columbia, California, from Asa Palmer to his brother, dated September 29, 1855, with great content on the California Gold Rush. A rambling discourse about life in the mines, with miners waiting for water to work their claims, which gave out at the end of July. He has been working in the mountains on a ditch to bring the water to the camps. Living outdoors, working hard. A friend went to the northern mines but has returned after no success. The writer has made nothing yet but hopes his claim will make enough to come home in the spring. The nearby town of Columbia is growing rapidly after a big fire the previous year. Many new brick fireproof buildings, over 1000 votes cast in the previous election, the Know-Nothings very successful, and more. Needs further research. Three pages, 7 1/2" ... morex 9 3/4" pale blue paper, folds, very good condition, no envelope present. An historic California"Gold Rush" letter found in New England. 1852 Handritten Diary - Gold Rush Prospector - Panama Rte to CA - SS Prometheus
This diary was written in 1852 by T.E. Mills. A married man who lived in Concord NH at the beginning of the diary. The California gold rush was then at it's height, and there were three ways to go to California from the East. One was the overland route, a second was by ship around South America. Both of these routes took six months, and of course, were full of hardships. The third one was the Panama or Isthmus Route. While the fastest of the three, it also had it's dangers, cholera, malaria and dysentery, to name a few, and required a difficult crossing of Central America. Mr Mills chose the Panama route as his way to California to find his fortune. On Mar 5. 1852, the author sailed from New York on the SS Prometheus. He daily noted the weather and the number of miles the ship had traveled from New York: March 11. Pleasant. Near island ... moreof St Domingo on the east and Cuba on the west of us.1380 miles from New York. The author's entries became more descriptive after reaching Central America. He wrote of some of the hardships aboard the ship and described his route which required switching to smaller boats several times in order to navigate the inland rivers and lakes. He also wrote about the sights he saw along the way. He mentioned a few people being buried at sea. One whom died of dysentery, another who fell through the hatch and broke his spine. A few of his entries: March 16.Pleasant but warm in the sun. Started up the San Juan river. Went about 2 miles and ran aground. No berths on the boat and hardly room for all to sit down. 8 PM 2 drunken Irishmen commenced quarrelling and kept up such a noise that there was no sleep until 11 and by that time the Captain was drunk and kept up the row 2 hours longer. Slept on deck. March 17.Pleasant. Started about 6. At 10 1/4 overtook the boat that started at 11 yesterday and passed it. Got aground and passengers were obliged to get out and push the boat off. 3 1/2 entered the Colorado River. Saw 4 alligators. Red and green parrots. The rivers are all

1850~AMAZING UNPUBLISHED SAN FRANCISCO GOLD RUSH ARCHIVE~50 LETTERS & DIARY
1850~AMAZING UNPUBLISHED SAN FRANCISCO GOLD RUSH ARCHIVE VINTAGE TYPESCRIPTS OF ORIGINAL DIARY AND 51 DETAILED LETTERS INCREDIBLE HISTORICAL CONTENT ON EARLY CALIFORNIA AND MINING I will give you a sketch of the celebration yesterday of the Admission of California into the States. A grand procession composed of the Soldiers. Police, Firemen, Boatmen, Chinese men, Odd Fellows, Masons and thousands of others. It was as splendid a procession as I ever wish to see. There were several orations delivered in the afternoon. In the evening a splendid ball. I was in the room this morning and it was decorated in the most splendid style. Flags of every nation were strung around the walls, but none so nice as the Stars and Stripes. There was one of the[The St. Francis] Hook and Ladder Corps which had 4 small boys on their wagon dressed splendidly and ... morein the middle a little girl carrying a banner with“The Belle of the Pacific” painted on it. The steamer“Oregon” was profusely decorated for the occasion. The supper was given in the next house to this—the one that I am in. The ladies’ dressing room was opposite. Our boss closed the gallery last night and on that account I tell you I saw some as fine looking girls or women here as one will see any place… Alfred Caldwell Thomas. Letter dated October 30, 1850. Note: The Celebration for the Admission of California to the Union was held on Tuesday. October 29, 1850, the day before the above quoted letter was written by Alfred Thomas. California was officially admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850. Interestingly, also mentioned in the same letter is the explosion of the steamer, Sagamore” which occurred on the same day as the statehood celebration. Onboard was the famous Mountain Man, James Kirker. The daily newspaper, Alta” reported the explosion of the steamer—stating that bodies and timber were scattered everywhere. Bodies were so mutilated, they could not be identified. Limbs and fragments were gathered up in baskets. Kirker had just boarded and amazingly survived

Message of the President of the United States Transmitting Information in Answer to a Resolution of the House of the 31st of December, 1849 on the Subject of California and New Mexico" Submitted by President Zachary Taylor, January 24th, 1850. 1st Edition/ 1st Printing. This 5 3/4" by 9" 976 page Volume includes 6 exceptionally important and early folding engraved maps of California and the Gold Regions and a seventh, full page, non-folding Map. ... moreZamorano states that this massive Government Document is"the most extensive source of authorities covering the period" This thick and massive government compendium contains a wealth of information on the annexation of Alta California by the United States, the changeover from Mexican to American rule, the transition from military to civilian government, and the earliest days of the Gold Rush. It systematically documents the work of the federal government in the newly won territory from 1847 to 1849. Arguably, these were the most important years in California history and no single publication provides as much raw data as does House Executive Document No. 17 offered here. The Volume opens with a brief statement by Mexican-American War hero President Zachary Taylor. Which touches on California's desire to be admitted to the Union as a state. This historically important, federal government publication then proceeds with a plethora of official proclamations, reports, circulars, and letters from virtually every important American official in California including Washington Bartlett, Walter Colton, R. B. Mason, Bennet Riley, Jonathan Drake Stevenson, Joseph Folsom, Stephen
