Julia Goddard’s delightful fantasy. First published in 1891, weaves together a series of fairy tales, told to the golden weathercock of the title, dealing mostly with fairies, ... moreand with enchantments of various kinds. This later edition of The Golden Weathercock. With the story newly retold by Dorothy King, is from the same series as Florence Harrison’s Mopsa the Fairy(1932) The charming illustrations are by the English artist Alice Helena Watson. A particularly elusive title(seemingly as scarce as Mopsa the Fairy) I can see only one other copy currently for sale online. Alice Watson(1896-1958) was born in Cumbria. And educated at a local Quaker school before attending the celebrated Glasgow School of Art. Her studies there were interrupted by the war and by the death of her father, and she left before completing the course. In the early 1920s she set up an art studio in London and accepted her first illustration commission(Compton Mackenzie’s Santa Claus in Summer. 1924) In 1926 she married the artist Alistair K. MacDonald and they went on to have two sons. The felt piece include 6 fairies, log with a bug peeking out, flower umbrella, leaf with berries, mushrooms, snail, firefly, butterfly, ladybug, line of ants, grasshopper, 3 clusters of flowers, and a leaf with fairy tea party flowers. This high quality set is lightly played with and in good condition. The pieces are not stained or torn and the board is in good shape. The plastic carrying sleeve is split up one side.
