WENKENBERG HIMMELSBRIEF - EXTREMELY RARE TYPE OF PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN BROADSIDE
Several types of Himmelsbriefe(Letters from Heaven) were printed by Pennsylvania Germans. The most common one was supposed to have been delivered at Magdeburg(sometimes misspelled Madgeburg) in 1783. The rarest one was delivered at Wenkenberg(sometimes misspelled Wenkenburg) in 1721. In fact. The Wenkenberg Himmelsbrief is so rare that Edwin M. Fogel missed it entirely in his survey of Pennsylvania German Himmelsbriefe published in the German American Annals in 1908. This particular copy is from the collection of Dr. Don Yoder, who purchased it decades ago at Weaver's Bookstore in New Holland, Pennsylvania. Dr. Yoder translates the beginning of the text as follows: A Quite New Doleful and Veracious Statement of Warning from the Letter that Hung in the Air at Wenkenburg on the 29th of December 1721. This Letter God allowed to be seen, ... moreoutside and inside the city, so that no one knew on what it was hanging. But it was written in golden letters and sent from God through an angel. Whowever desires to copy it, to him it will lower itself; but whoever has no desire to copy it, it will fly away from him into the air.

AN EXTREMELY RARE c. 1850 BROADSIDE OF AN EARLY AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE PERFORMANCE
AN EXTREMELY RARE c. 1850 BROADSIDE OF AN EARLY AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE PERFORMANCE WORLDCAT DOES NOT LIST ANY OTHER COPIES OF THIS PLAYBILL The Broadside: American Shakespeare Performance] Boston Museum Richard 3d or the Battle of Bosworth Field! approx. 36.5 x 14 cm. in frame. s.d. But Boston, Hooton's Press, c. 1850s. The Colley Cibber adaptation of Shakespeare's Tragedy. RARE. Some creasing or toning. Worldcat does not list any copy of this interesting broadside. John Wilkes Booth would assume the leading role when the play was performed in the 1860s. Perhaps partly because of the failure of his previous two plays. Cibber's next effort was an adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard III. Neither Cibber's adaptations nor his own original plays have stood the test of time, and hardly any of them have been staged or reprinted ... moreafter the early 18th century, but his popular adaptation of Richard III remained the standard stage version for 150 years. The American actor George Berrell wrote in the 1870s that Richard III was: a hodge-podge concocted by Colley Cibber. Who cut and transposed the original version, and added to it speeches from four or five other of Shakespeare's plays, and several really fine speeches of his own. The speech to Buckingham: I tell thee, coz, I've lately had two spiders crawling o'er my startled hopes"the well-known line"Off with his head! So much for Buckingham! the speech ending with"Conscience, avaunt! Richard's himself again!and other lines of power and effect were written by Cibber, who, with all due respect to the'divine bard, improved upon the original, for acting purposes.
1837 extremely rare Ohio River Steamboat Ladies Cabin Register-Brownsville-St. L
1837 Extremely rare Ladies Cabin Register for a steamboat trip#1 from Brownsville. Pennsylvania to St. Louis, Missouri. Dim: 9 11/16" x 15 1/16" see#7] Printed at top" Berth or State Room to be changed without consulting the Captain or Clerk" Trip No. 1 from Brownsville to Saint Louis 1837" This boat had 8 berths for women and the sheet gives names of each, port of embarkation and destination and whether paid or not. Mrs. Babbitt and Mrs. Stewart are sharing#4 so there are nine names. Traveling western and southern rivers in the ante-bellum period was risky and not just from boiler explosions and river snags. The steamboats carried a number of somewhat to really disreputable men and Victorian women had to be protected while traveling. So a small portion of the each passenger steamboat was assigned to women whether ... moretraveling with a husband or a family member or friend or alone. This followed the standards of eastern steamboats. Normally the women's cabins were located aft, to the rear of the boiler deck shielded from the heat and noise of the boiler room. The accoutrements were more refined with damask curtains, rocking chairs, sofas and maybe a piano. Rooms were about 1/3 the size of a man's room. The most noticeable distinction was the women's section was carpeted while the rest of the boat was not. see#5 from internet] Dividing the women's cabins from the rest of the boat was a foldable wall, partition or sliding door. Although husbands could sleep with their wives, single males could only come in during the day. Men and women ate together. This 1200 mile journey began as Martin Van Buren became President and the American economy crashed in the Panic of 1837. Its not clear if the boat owners/captain knew who was getting on where before the trip began but the names are not exactly in geographical order of point of embarkation. The point of departure was Brownsville, Pennsylvania[see#2 from internet] which was located on the east side of the Monongahela River south of Pitt
