1944 Handwritten Diary Fairbanks Alaska Denali National Park Brundidge Holt
I would have never guessed that a diary. With only 30 days of handwritten days, would contain such interesting and mysterious entries as this one does. The diary originally belonged to Charles William Holt who during the time this diary was written was in Alaska. I believe he was in the Fairbanks area and some of the remote areas around Fairbanks. Including Nenana. The diary is from 1944, WWII era, and he didn’t seem to be there as a military man(although there are some entries about the war and it’s progress) but seemed to have more interest in visiting mines. I believe he buys a piece of property around the Denali National Park Area called Windy Creek. http:www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/unit16.htm BUT his biggest interest. One which consumes him, was a woman named Della. On the inside front cover of this diary, Charles writes… To know ... morewhat is right and not do it is to lack courage. The reason I say there is a mystery behind this diary is because Della is married(and not to Charles) and I couldn’t believe I actually found her on the web(Couldn’t seem to find Charles though) Della also has a little girl and Charles says that the little girl is his. The web however says the child belongs to her husband. Neil. They also have 2 other children. Della and her husband live in a remote cabin that Charles says is around Post 369. I will send along with this diary, the full names of Della and Neil. Charles still dates but says the woman he’s dating is a“gold digger” At one point he even sends a message through a radio station. A song dedication, to Della and she sends one back the next day. Finally Charles gets brave and in the last entry of the diary Charles writes that he sent Della a note by train saying he’ll be there the next day and if she doesn’t want to meet him to have a note at Post 369. What an entry too because he does go and ends of watching her cabin through binoculars. I would love to know the entire story. On a side note he also gets a letter from Argentina and says the news is very sad and

1914 Handwritten Personal & Travel Diary - Italy on the "Adriatic", house robbed
This is a diary written by an unknown wealthy woman from Youngstown. Oh. Part of the diary is devoted to two trips, one to Italy via the"Adriatic" the other a summer vacation on the shores of Lake Michigan. On the trip to Italy, she is accompanied by a young girl, Emily, and also someone she calls M.E. From reading the diary. It appears that the author had two children, Imogene and William. Imogene attended Mt Holyoke, and William attended Dartmouth. On her return from Europe, she visited both children for a few days at their schools. The diary begins on Jan 1, 1914 and the first week the entries are about the author's preparations to leave on her trip. On Jan 10, she got underway: Jan 10.Came on board the"Adriatic" White Star Line, about ten AM. Found our stateroom, fixed our things. Will and Imogene came to see us ... moreoff. Sailed at 12 noon. Emma Peck sent a box of flowers. Jan 13.Ship rolling worse than ever. Water frequently dashing up over the porthole. Swept over upper promenade deck. Drenching several people. Had lunch and dinner on deck. Had a hot salt water bath before going to bed. Jan 15.All have felt pretty well today. Wrote to Imogene and to Frank& Elizabeth. This morning we saw a full-rigged sailing vessel. Three tall masts with all sails set. It was beautiful. Spoke to Helen Wilcox, Caroline Huggins friend, after dinner. The author spent the next three months traveling through Italy. She wrote daily in the diary about all the sights she saw. A few were not on the itinerary: Jan 28.Emily did not feel very well. M.E. and I went out this am. And all went this afternoon. Saw a flying machine, going back and forth, over water and land and skimming along the water looking like a giant dragon-fly. April 30.Left Palermo about 8:30 last evening. Somewhat windy part of the day. Heard that there are about 300 immigrants on board. This diary is a great slice of early 1900's life in rural/small town New York. Diary measures approximately 6-3/4" x 8-1/4" There is no cover and the first/last page is detached from the rest of the diary. Remainder. While worn and a little frayed is firmly attached. About the first 15 pages are written in black ink and is easily read. Balance of diary is written in a blue/green ink that bled through to the other side. This makes the diary harder to read but, as with many older diaries, once you get the hang of it, the diary is quite legible. Diary covers the year of 1917 from January through December. I couldn't determine name of writer but plenty of other names are. These include: Olney and Carrie. Leslie, Ida, Josie(7 yrs 5 mos on 2/6. Often mentioned attending school or Sunday School) Maccabes(Macabbee) Fred Hoch'er(Hochstrasser) ... moreJamie Dearstyne, Harvey Gathen(died 1/9/1917 Rensselaerville, Episcopal Cemetery) I did some research especially using the Berne Historical Project and believe two stores frequently mentioned are Hochstrasser's Store and Lyon and Tompkins both located in Hamlet of Berne. At the back there are pages of the diary listing prices of various items. There is much writing about day to day chores and activities. Going for milk Bringing over phonograph for entertainment Having a dance in the new hall Golden wedding celebration Teacher's convention in Albany Crystal Lake picnic Putting in ice Measles in R. Ville Mailing muskrat skins getting shoes at Hochstrasser Boarding house burned Thompson Lake Some towns and locations mentioned include Rensselaerville or R.Ville. L.A. or L.C. Hall(drama held here) Albany, Altamont, Crystal Lake, Schenectady, West Bernice And finally. Some dates listed toward the back of the diary: Mrs. A. Barber 64 Mar 1917 Bertie 41 May 9. 1917 Married 20 years June. 1917 Doras Schoonmaker Sept. 9. 1917 Frank and Libbie married 5 years 12/5/17 There is a lot more information yet to be discovered and I hope you have fun doing it. Antique Diary VT 1884 Full Old Vermont Franklin County VT Diary Antique Vermont
Here's a great read for folks interested in 19th Century Vermont country life.particularly in the Franklin County. Vermont area. It's a diary full of entries for the year 1884. Curiously, in the thrifty Yankee way, the keeper used the lower portions of many pages to make entries for the same dates in 1885.the following year. While we cannot be certain it appears this book may have been compiled by a"C.S. Jemison" as that name forms a heading on the entry for January 1st. It seems the diary comes from somewhere in or near Franklin County, Vermont. Towns mentioned include St. Albans, Swanton, Highgate, Berkshire, and others. Entries center on country life, family comings and goings, tasks of the day, and the weather. While the text is in good shape with a tight binding there is some toning. Fortunately the entiries are in ... morepencil so you don't have that familiar ink fading. At some point the cranberry leather covers have been nibbled on causing some loss. The gilt trim remains bright. There is a slot for a pencil and a pocket inside at the back. Luckily that nibbler did not get through to the entries themselves. So there you have it. Curious about the good sleighing days of 1884 in northern Vermont you can find the answers here. Please ask any questions which come to mind, and note the diary measures 4.5 by 7 inches. 1855 Important Diary Medium Spiritualist Women’s Rights Slavery
1855 Important Diary Medium Spiritualist Women’s Rights Slavery Met Samuel Colt Lucretia Mott Séance Healing 179 pgs This is a great and important 179 page handwritten diary. It was written by Achsa W Sprague in Vermont. Sprague was afflicted with severe arthritis as a young woman and could barely walk on her own until she met a Psychologist who magnetized her over several months and“healed” her. She then went on to become a well-known medium and spiritualist and giving speeches around New England in the 1850s. This diary covers her time as a medium and public speaker on spiritualism. She talks about meeting famous people and talking with them about spiritualism. She talks about her travels to speaking engagements and resistance she met with from various leaders. There is also quite a bit about women’s rights and talk about abolition ... moreand slavery. Each page is long and completely full. It goes from 1855 to 1856 and has great content throughout. Here is a sample of what is in the journal: 1855 Hartford. Ct. Nov. 17th. The pages. Both bright& dark, of my former life are left unwritten, save in the great Life Book of Eternity. I came to Hartford one week ago today to speak under Spirit Influence as I have been doing publicly for the last year& a half. Having been raised from a bed of sickling’s, where I suffered the most extreme pain by Spirit Agency, I have felt it my duty to do that which has been pointed out to me by my Spirit Guides, the result is, that I have felt constrained to take the position which I now occupy, that of a Public Speaking Medium. And in the course of events I am now at Hartford, a place which I have once before visited in the same capacity. I spoke here last Sabbath, at"Union Hall, afternoon& evening. Had a very good attendance, especially in the evening. Also spoke at Manchester some eight miles distant last Tuesday Evening. There are very few believers in Spiritualism at that place, but had a very good audience. I enjoyed it well. Tomorrow, Sabbath) I speak here again

5 Handwritten Diary Moulton Cotton Family Randolph VT Washington DC Mrs Lincoln
I want to start off by saying that on a weekly basis I get questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. So I thought I’d post something to ease everyone’s mind before they buy. I am very passionate about diary collecting and history and I can’t even imagine buying a diary lot from one particular family(such as this one from the Moulton family) and then splitting them up and selling each separately. Its heart wrenching when I see this happening and you have my promise that if I have more then one diary. No matter how many I have, I will always sell family lots together in one auction. But I think it’s a good question you should always ask your sellers just in case you want to try and keep a lot together. And with that said… There are some diaries that could actually change and/or add to the course ... moreof history and I feel these diaries possess that kind of information. This is a very historical group of diaries that belonged to the Moulton family originally from Randolph and Brookfield Vermont. There are 5 handwritten diaries written by different members of the family and they date between 1855-1872. Also included in this diary lot is a handwritten manuscript that I found between the pages of one of the diaries. This manuscript has a handwritten genealogy representing the Moulton/Cotton families. The head of this family was Phineas Moulton and he was married to Maria Cotton. Phineas was the son of Phineas Moulton Sr. and Maria’s father was Bybe Lake Cotton and both were soldiers in the Connecticut Line during the Revolutionary War. Phineas Sr. was a pioneer of the town of Randolph Vermont. Arriving in 1788 from Monson Massachusetts and settling in 1793 about one mile east from the village on what is known as the“Green Mountain Stock Farm” which has since remained in the possession of the family. Phineas Jr. became influential in public affairs, serving in both houses of the state legislature. There is also a cemetery named after the family called Moulton Cemetery a

1931-40 Handwritten Diary Harry Jaques Lynn MA Historical Society Road Trips
Up for auction today is a 150 page handwritten diary that originally belonged to Harry A. Jaques. I found Harry on the Lynn Massachusetts genealogy sites so I’m assuming this is the same man. Says he was born in 1862 and married Junie or Jennie who has been his wife for 49 years when this diary was written. I get the feeling he might have something to do with the Historical Society too because in the front of the journal you’ll find several pages devoted to work he’s done and at the top of the pages it says either“Historical House” or“Lynn Historical” He also talks about the Historical Society within his diary entries. So this would most definitely be a great diary for anyone having interest in or living in the Lynn Massachusetts area. The first entry starts on November 1 st. 1931 and the last one May 30 th. 1940. He doesn’t write every single ... moreday but does write for 150 pages which give the reader a lot of information. He’s a“road trip” kind of a guy too because so many of his entries have to do with trips taken in an auto. I’ve taken several of his entries to give you a better idea of the contents… 1931“November 1 st, Rupert and Helen came and took us to Ride to Peterborough and Keene then home by the way of Manchester. Left home about 11 A.M. Come home at 9:45. We ate lunch by the side of the road… November 29 th, Rupert and Helen were here to help us eat our turkey after Thanksgiving dinner they took us to ride on the turnpike to Dummer Mill then to Byfield and to West Newburg through Ash Swamp and to the place where Grandfather Jaques. Giles M. Jaque was born. Then to the main road to Greenland and Georgetown. Topsfield and home… 1932“February 18 th. Benjamine N. Johnson died at his home on Nahant St. After a short illness of heart trouble. He was the President of the Historical Society at the time of his death… March 28 th, General alarm of fire on Broad St. at the Atlantic Wrecking Co. 4 men were hurt and were take to hospital… May 31 st, Bessie Richardson and mother and father took us
1945 WWII Handwritten Autograph Album Diary Camp Stoneman Biak Yontan Airfield
Up for auction today is a handwritten autograph album belonging to a soldier who was in the army during WWII and it looks like he was the baker in the outfit; or at least all of his buddies who signed the book refer to him as that. They also call him“Stubby” I tried to see if they were all part of the same company but didn’t have the time to research it thoroughly. In the back of the album there is a three page diary entry which gives you a good idea of where he was and when. And I quote… MY DIARY My Voyage Overseas. I left Camp Stoneman at San Francisco Cal. August 27 th. 44. I passed by Guadalcanal and arrived in New Guinea 9/11/44. Arrived in Biak Netherlands East Indies 9/25/44. We were on the front lines there then. They hadn’t invaded the Philippines yet. Our first big air raid hit us March 22 nd. 1945. There was nine of my buddies ... morekilled then, blew everywhere, it missed me by about 50 ft. Daisy Cutter, the name of the bombs. We had 27 air raids there. We loaded on L.S.T. June 18 th. And left for the Philippines June 22 nd. We went to Leyte and it took 5 days to get there. We stayed two days. Then we started for Okinawa. It took us 4 days. We started unloading at Naha 4 th of July. The 5 th of July we moved to Yontan Airstrip(at least I think it says Airstrip) about 25 northwest. Our first night there and the air raids started. This is August 4 th. We have had 33 air raids here. We bet among the fella’s who guessed the closest time they come over. The nips… His entries suddenly stop there. I found out some very interesting information on Yontan Airfield… Yontan(Yomitan) Airfield was originally established by Imperial Japanese Army in 1944 as Kita Airfield( 北飛行場, Kita Hikōjō? During the Battle of Okinawa on April 1. 1945, United States Marine Corps and United States Army forces seized the airfield on the first day of the landing. It was quickly repaired and became the first airfield on Okinawa to be used by the American forces. Later. It was developed into a major American base for A

1969 HANDWRITTEN DIARY OF EXTREMELY BOY CRAZY 18 YR. OLD GIRL!LONG ISLAND N.Y.!!
I am so pleased to offer you today such a cool diary from 1969!Alot of the things she talks about takes you right back to the 60's!It was written by a girl who turns 18 this year and who is obsessed with boys.Or men,I should say.She is from New York and graduates this year also. She is not sure what she is going to do with her future,go to college,or what. She tries to find a job for the summer, but never does,or doesnt mention it.She doesnt want school to end because she doesnt have a steady boyfriend,or at least one she wants to be with, and shes afraid she'll be bored. She will date guys she doesnt really care to,just to go out,and the one guy she really likes, apparently doesnt feel the same about her.She talks about things like, going to see Blood Sweat and Tears, and Hair, and of course her main topic is the men in her life, and the dates ... moreshe goes on,she mentions getting high, and feeling bad about it,drinking some, being chased around the class room by her male teacher, while he makes embarassing statements to her,and how much she likes it!She even mentions seeing one of her male teachers on the beach, and says he was trying to pick her up! She wants for women to be able to sleep around and not to have to worry about morals or ethics. She talks about her family and friends too.I have to mention that while reading this she cracked me up because she uses the word, piss" sometimes, and it is just funny the way she uses it.For instance she said one time,What a piss today we got the permission to wear pants to school-amazing for our school district. She uses the word several times and also does more cursing. To give you a better idea of the contents of this diary here are a few examples of her entries. Went to see Joanna. The most fantastic picture Ive seen ever beautuful.May people be like that one day-why cant it happen in reality-why cant a girl just sleep around& have fun-no ties why must morals& ethics be such an important thing. It was sad 18- no friends-no future hopes-no fun-Birthdays are sad 18,18 is o

150pc Handwritten Letters Diary Archive Beal Potter Bath Bowdoinham ME 1896-1951
This group is just too large for me to read and study right now so I’m selling it un-researched. All of the items belonged to the Beal and Potter family of Maine. Most are written to Rachel Beal Potter who was the daughter of Reverend Zacheus M. Beal. There are 120 letters. 2 handwritten journals and about 20-30 other pieces of ephemera. All of them date between 1896-1951. Most of the letters date from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. A few are from her father too. Some of the writers of the letters are: H. H. Lefferts(who has a business or ministry called“Signs of the Times) R. Lester Dodson, Martin D. Fisher, D. M. Vail, Minnie Waddell, J. I. Foster of Rising Star Texas, Arnold H. Bellows, Marion S. Brooks of Chico California, Elder O. J. Crocker of Hiram Georgia and more. Dodson and Lefferts ended being authors writing several books about“Signs ... moreof the Times” and other religious pieces. Most of the letters are long several page letters too and most have their original envelopes. As far as the two journals; both seem to have to do with genealogy. One is a 50 page journal and the title page reads“ Bath Maine. Dec. 2. 1895. Letters, preaching and thoughts of Father’s. Eld. Zacheus M. Beal. And then in the back of that journal is another section with the title. Sketches of Sister Attie’s letter to Father. The 2 nd journal has 62 pages and all those pages have to do with birth. Marriage and death dates. When they moved to each house, dates of special events, etc. Some great family history. Then as far as the ephemera goes there are a few“Times of the Signs” newsletters or newspapers. Then there are 18 handwritten(several pages) of manuscripts that are titled. Maine Old School Baptist Circular Letters. Bowdoinham Maine. I actually found this church on the web and scanned a photo of it. These manuscripts date from the early 1900’s and then skip to the 1940’s. Really a wonderful family group that deserves further research.
1905 Handwritten Diary Sails to Berlin to Study Piano at Stern Conservatory
I know this 1905 diary has so much more to it then what I’m going to be able to share here because I haven’t fully read or researched it. The diary doesn’t have a full name but the initials F. M.B. are written on the inside cover of the diary. She also mentions an uncle by the name of Buettner so that could possibly be her last name. Further research needs to be done. The diary starts off with our author and her friend Gertrude in the states heading to St. Louis through Burlington on board the train. They are heading to New York to catch the ocean liner Kronprinz Wilhelm which takes them to Berlin Germany. The reason our author is heading to Europe is because she is attending The Stern Conservatory in Berlin under the tutorship of Professor Gustav Hollaender. I believe she plays the piano. The Stern conservatory has an incredible history ... morebehind it and I quote… It was a private school in Berlin with many notable tutors and alumni. It was originally founded in 1850 at the Berliner Musikschule by Julius Stern. Theodor Kullak and Adolf Bernhard Marx. It was originally founded in 1850 as the Berliner Musikschule by Julius Stern, Theodor Kullak and Adolf Bernhard Marx. Kullak withdrew from the conservatory in 1855 in order to create a new academy of sculpture and three-dimensional art. With Marx's withdrawal in 1856, the conservatory came exclusively under the Stern family and adopted its name. In 1894 it was taken over by Gustav Hollaender(the uncle of film composer Friedrich Hollaender) who moved the school's location to the Berlin Philharmonic concert hall on Bernburger Strasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In the course of the Gleichschaltung process. The Stern Academy in 1936 was renamed Konservatorium der Reichshauptstadt Berlin controlled by the Nazi regime. Gustav Hollaender's heirs were diseased. But for a few years they were able to run a"Jewish Private Music School Hollaender" until they were deported and murdered in 1941. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the school was again renam

Written down circa 1850-52 by a soldier named O. W. Gilman. Also contains a diary from 1855 written by 18-19 year old Hattie Gilman. The book is from the Gilman family, Buffalo, New York. Judging by the officers mentioned in the journal and the places where he marched and camped. Gilman served with the 10th Infantry. The book begins with a few poems by Harriet(Hattie" L. Gilman of Buffalo(her relation to O.W. unknown) and then records O.W. Gilman's ... moreexperiences beginning on May 8, 1847, when he sailed from Fort Hamilton, NY bound for Texas and Mexico. The journal section totals 20 handwritten pages. After that, Gilman has written"Journal lost, Song book commenced Nov. 15th, 1852. This is followed by handwritten lyrics to songs, each with O.W. Gilman's name below and dated 1852, followed by poems and then a daily diary during 1855 written by Hattie, who notes that she turned 19 on August 10. Since Gilman has written"Journal lost" after the 20th page, he most likely wrote his account into this book from his original journal within the few years after his return from the war. Preliminary research found no known publication. Gilman records the difficult conditions under which the troops marched and camped. The burning sands, scorching sun and lack of water. He gives numerous details of the places they march to in Mexico, incidents including a few men who are killed by unknown assassins or drown in the Rio Grande, the death of General Hopping, and in November the visit of General Zachary Taylor and his retinue to Gilman's camp(at the School of Instruction in Mier) 7.5 x 6.5" Very readable. 1878 Travel Diary to Colorado Dodge City KS Indian Fight
1878 Travel Diary to Colorado Dodge City KS Indian Fight Describes Travel from Missouri Encounters Indian This is a fantastic handwritten diary of a trip starting in Missouri and going to Colorado with stopovers in places like Dodge City. Kansas. There is great description of the trip and the places they visited including several times talking about run-ins with Indians or avoiding Indians and one of a battle between soldiers and Indians near Fort Dodge. It is from 1878 and covers several months journey. It is in good condition and done by Lilley. It says in part: Left Osceola MO for Colorado May the 16 th 1878. Our party consisted of four in NO: N Lilley. Zach Lilley, Hugh Hecherd and WE Lilley, the first day we reached Appleton City…Thence we removed to Mr Jacob Gundy’s 3 miles South East of town and remained there until Monday 20… I saw ... morethe smoke from his campfire. I then remarked that I did not expect to see campers so near to our own tent. To which he replied in an unknown language or rather no tongue at all. I there smelt Big INgin and farther more saw the rings in his ears and some other weaving apparel peculiar to the Indian…I immediately notified the gentleman by a motion of the hand that distance would bring enchantment to the scene…I then made some other remark to which he replied in a gruff grunt and a sudden loss of the head by this time I had seen quite enough of Indian life for the time being and made the same known by gently waving the Red Skin off… Salma County is like most other Kansas RR towns in point of business. The streets were thronged with busy men and loaded wagon. I was not definitely informed as to its population. Some gave it as being 1500 while others claimed it for 3000. The buildings are substantial most of them being built of stone or brick. There public school building is one that would be a credit to any town in the state… Saw a Jack Rabbit during the day passed through Brooksville. A small town on the KPRR pitched our tent on a branch about 4 miles west of Brooksville. We are
1880 Handwritten Diary Rosa Sanborn Holderness NH 12yr old Girl Makes Gloves
This is another charming little diary written by a young 12 year old school girl who makes gloves. The diary is from 1880 and it originally belonged to Rosa R. Sanborn of Holderness New Hampshire. In the back of the book she writes… Steal not this book for if you do Rosa Sanborn will be after you. Rosa was born in 1868 and the daughter of Luther B. Sanborn and Laura J. Smith Sanborn. She married Frank P. Pearson July 25 th. 1898. I just skimmed through the diary as her entries are rather simple but still a great piece for anyone living in or having interest in this part of New Hampshire. I did notice that the entire family seems to contract the measles and that her Grandfather Smith dies. I’ve taken a few entries to give you a better idea of the contents… 1880“Henry Clark and Bill C. was here. Our folks broke roads. 4 went to meeting. Ned ... morewent a cavorting…Had lots of callers. Father fenced. Went over to Brown’s part of us. I made a few gloves…We went to school. Grandpa Smith is sick. Father and mother went to see him…Grandpa Smith died today at 7 o’clock P.M. August 28 th)We all went to Grandpa Smith’s funeral but Cora. Nona and Julie. We had a lot of company. Ned come home. Some of which are; Henry Clark, Ben Sanborn, George Baker, Elder Nelson, Betsy and Georgie Huckins, Bill Cox, Brown, Smith, Batchelder, Gilman, Ettie Worthren, Stevens, Beede, John Shaw, Eastman, Bill Wallace and more. The diary measures about 2 ¼” x 4” and it’s in fair to good condition.
RARE 1910 HANDWRITTEN DIARY Kansas City Missouri/Louisville Kentucky History
1910 HANDWRITTEN DIARY- It's been a while since I've read a diary that held my interest as this one did, I found myself not wanting to put it down! Not only does it have amazing entries, but it is from Missouri and she also travels to Kentucky to stay with family, and diaries from both of these States are exceptionally tough to find! This INCREDIBLE SPECTACULAR 105 YEAR OLD handwritten antique diary/ journal/ manuscript book was written by a woman whose name was VIRGINIA CROMWELL ROBERTSON who was born on July 13. 1827 in Ohio, and died on Nov. 24, 1916. A picture of her gravestone can be seen on the find-a-grave website. She married Richard Robertson. Who was a Steamboat Captain. He was born in 1819 and was 8 years older than Virginia. Which was quite unusual for those days! A 1860 census shows they were living in Newport. Campbell ... moreCounty, Kentucky where her husband was employed as a"Riverman" They had a 13 year old domestic servant named"Lena Able" A 1880 Census shows the family living in Kaw. Jackson County, Missourri and Virginia's husband was employed as a Steamboat Captain. They had a very large family of 7 children: Richard ~ Minnie ~ Grace ~ Nannie ~ Ernest ~ Howard ~ Guy ~ Lillian, and a servant named James Sheck. Their daughter Lillian was visiting abroad in Europe. When Virginia wrote this diary in 1910 she was widowed. Her husband died in 1900. She was living with her daughter. Grace, in Kansas Ward 12, Jackson County, Missouri. This is verified by 1910 Census records. I will include a copies of the Census records to the winning bidder. This diary is JUST AMAZING! The entries are very detailed and give such a wonderful look into her life! She loves music and writes of attending Operas and concerts. She writes of traveling to Louisville Kentucky to visit and stay with family and visits with many friends. She tells how traveling for 2 days by train between Kentucky& Missouri was very hot and dusty. And of Mr Bryan(who was a Presidential candidate) was making speeches
Antique Handwritten Diary of Civil War Colonel - Coded Masonic Memory Jogger
I'm going to start out by saying this is a lengthy item to describe and do it justice so please bear with me. I believe this handwritten diary to be a very rare find. It was originally owned by a Civil War Colonel named Colonel John B Yates. It is written in a coded language and I have done a lot of research to determine what exactly this is. With the help of several professors we have determined it is a Masonic Memory Jogger. The Masons used many rituals and were expected to memorize them without having them written down where just anyone could see. By using the book"Illustrations of Masonry" by William Morgan 1827 I have been able to decipher bits and pieces of what this says. There is still a lot to be deciphered which I will leave to the curious mind who owns this gem after me. Colonel Yates served in Company A. Michigan ... moreEngineers and Mechanics. That regiment worked repairing bridges and railroads, building blockhouses and fortifications, having skirmishes with the enemy and taking part in the engagements of Bowling Green, Perryville, Stones River and on the march with Sherman's army, 1861-1865. Colonel Yates was from Albion, Michigan. One of his business cards was tucked in a pocket of the diary and there is a photo of this. Also tucked in a pocket was an invitation to a"Washington Ball" at the Union House, in Delhi Friday evening, Feb. 20, 1863 at 4 o'clock. I have a copy of Col. Yates death notice stating his birth date of Oct. 18, 1833, and his record of service during the Civil War. This was written by William T Sherman himself. A quote reads"Its journal of operation during the campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas would illustrate the absolute limit of man for physical labor. I have sometimes reproached myself for cruelty in imposing or allowing to be imposed, on it such hard and constant labor, and now desire to indorse the paper with an emphasis that will show that I was conscious of the fact. I will be much pleased if Col. Yates can be suitably rewarded for his pa

1851 Handwritten Diary Caleb B. Rogers Norwich CT Sailing on Ship Constantine
Wish I had time to give you a full detailed description of this diary but I’m in the process of downsizing my private collection as I don’t have the kind of time to spend on them that they deserve. I’ve had this diary for almost 15 years now and I read it a long time ago but can’t quite remember all the details. However. I kept it because of the amazing qualities it has. First off it was written in 1851 by Caleb B. Rogers. It’s all about his journey on board the ship Constantine with R. L. Bunting as the ship’s captain. Caleb was sailing with his wife and they were both from Norwich Connecticut heading to Europe. He owned a machine company in Norwich and I found several inventions of his on the web. Plus in a history book on Norwich I found out that Caleb. Along with several other prominent men, formed The Municipal Gas Light Plant in 1853. ... moreThere are 123 handwritten pages and 8 of those pages have wonderful drawings on them(see scans above. There are also 10 pages with shipboard entries in the beginning starting with them leaving the docks in New York Harbor on May 8 th. 1851. He even lists the names of the 21 cabin passengers that are on board the ship. One is a Dr. Watkins who was a widower and 54 years old. However the Dr. just married a young woman who is 19 years old! He has a daughter who is 23. How interesting is that. And as you can imagine. A steamship in 1851 is quite different then the“modern” ocean liners of the turn of the century. I’ve scanned as many pages as I can to give you an idea of the contents but believe me you won’t be disappointed. This diary has so many wonderful qualities with its provenance being one of them. It measures about 4” x 6 ¼” and has a beautiful burnt orange colored hard cover. The cover is a bit worn but the binding and pages look good.

1869/1870/1871 Handwritten Diaries Diary - Fred Felch, N Sutton, NH and Boston
Frederick A Felch lived on a farm in No Sutton NH. He was 18 years old in 1869. And had a sister Mary Addie, age 23, and brothers John, age 22, Mark age 16. Fred and all the brothers worked very hard on the farm, along with their father, Gideon and mother, Malvina. In the winter months, they cut timber and took loads of wood to the mill. In the spring, they gathered sap. Of the three diaries. The earliest(1869) is the neatest and most complete, young Fred having skipped only 4 days of the year. He was quite smitten with a young lady named Ella, and wrote quite often about her: Feb 18.Our school finished today. Six men in the afternoon answered questions. Elder Cimbal was there. We got home at 5 oclock. Good evening. Ella I am glad to see you but I can't so too bad. Feb 26.I choped limbs upon his farm. Stormy. I choped until I got sick ... moreof it and put for home. I heard from Ella last nite. She is a lovely gal. June 4.I think of the lovesick they say I am. Ella Fisher wants to go a fishing some. Fred seemed to be sowing some wild oats and didn't get along with someone he called"Old Mean" and a few other names. Possibly his mother: Feb 9.They had a tip top good sing this evening. I was about sick but that was all rite. A lot there. Oh how sorry I am for something that I done but I never shall again at school. Feb 11.I didn't go down to Meeting this evening. They had a real good one. I was mad and no one cared for that but me. Mar 2.I schoped and choped. We had a first rate sing this evening. The Old Mean said that I got home at 2 oclock. I new better. 12 oclock. Mar 9.We all went to town meeting. I staid round there til half past 2. Then I went down you now where to Ella Fisher and came up to the N( and got some snuff and got drunk and got home half past 10 safe. Apr 4.Deacon Nichols was buried today. I went to meeting all day. I am sick of home if I ever was. Sept 26.I went to Church all day. I went down and took supper with Ella. Ella
Antique 1907 Handwritten Diary: Ithaca NY Young Lady Ella Rider, Victorian Life
Antique 1907 Handwritten Diary: Ithaca NY Young Lady Ella Rider. Victorian Life Description. Offered here is the 1907 diary of a young lady from Ithaca. N.Y. I haven't read the whole diary. But did peek in enough to get the gist of her story. The author wrote a half to a full-page daily. Her handwriting very easy to read. At this point. We believe she was Ella Rider. I have 14 more of what may be this woman's diaries up through 1961. Only the 1907 diary is being auctioned here, but if you're interested in the lot, let me know and I can place the rest of them on eBay as a bulk buy. I also have 16 other vintage diaries that apparenlty belonged to Ella's sister Hazel Rider Daly. I will be offering these singly or as a lot soon. Let me know if you have a preference on how they're sold. Hazel was originally from Ithaca but ... morelater moved to Cortland. Hazel's diaries run from 1913 thru 1959. At this point I'm confused over who wrote some of the diaries in these two lots. We know which 16 are definitely Hazel's because she signed them. The others are unsigned and could be either sister. Though there are two 1913s and two 1932s. indicating at least two writers for those years. But back to what we're going to call Ella's 1907 diary. While in Ithaca she worked in a store. And probably lived with her parents. She had a large circle of girlfriends. And male friends appear fairly regularly to walk her home. A particular fellow"stayed until nearly one. Then he said he wouldn't go until I had kissed him goodnight. So I did(not) Ella is active in several churches. Their choirs and youth groups, and she and her girlfriends attend several times per week. She especially enjoys having girlfriends spend the night. Or spending nights at their homes, and writes of being very disappointed when they don't always accept her invitations. She sews. Including working on a long kimono, and occasionally goes to a sewing bee. She notes riding her bicycle a few times, listening to the Graphaphone
1948 Typed Diary & Scrapbook Trip to NY City/Crestline OH Lawyer Charles Ryan
If you love New York City then this is the diary/scrapbook for you. It originally belonged to a Crestline Ohio Lawyer by the name of Charles Edward Ryan and it’s all about his first trip to New York City in 1948. There are 55 pages in this journal and 27 of those are a typed diary of his trip. The rest are scrapbook pages loaded with ephemera including 25 postcards(4 of those are of the Gold Bond Border series) 1 photo postcard showing(I believe) Charles standing in front of the Statue of Liberty, newspaper clippings, souvenir pamphlets from all the different sights, hotel receipt, train schedules, and then in the back he’s pasted a book called, Naked City” By Weegee which has some incredible photos inside. Just the front cover of the book is pasted to the back cover of the scrapbook. I usually quote passages from the diary portion but since ... moreit’s typed I thought I could just scan some of the pages and they could be easily read that way. However I want you to see just how good of a writer he was and therefore I’m quoting the first page and another excerpt from page 6… SO THIS IS NEW YORK… 4 July 1948. It has been stated that in writing a story. The author writes the introduction last. So be it. In this respect, and in this one only, I will follow the orthodox. I arose this A.M. and besides being four A.M, which in itself with me up, is usual, I pinched myself to see if it was all true. After the customary reaction(it hurt) I concluded I was going to travel. Every since my trip to Milwaukee. Wisconsin. In 1940, I said I was going to go West. Well, this A.M. Bernice went to the station with me to see that I boarded the Eastbound train, the Pennsylvania Gotham. And I was headed for NEW YORK CITY. For the city of over seven and a half million. I was to temporarily increase the population by one. The train was on time, leaving Crestline at 5:30 A.M. Bernice saw me seated, and I felt a little‘downcast’ to be leaving her. Then when I saw a tear rolling down her cheek, I turned my head; I felt downright a

1846 Handwritten Diary Mary Narbonne Salem MA Seamstress Famous House Beaten
Although the entries in this diary are simple and small the provenance is anything but that. The diary dates from 1845(although her entries are from 1846 and some from the 1870’s) and there are simple notations on only 85 of the days. It belonged to a woman by the name of Mary A. Narbonne who was a prominent resident of Salem Massachusetts. Her home is on the National Historic Register and her family and history is quite amazing to say the least. Before I get to the diary I want to tell you a little bit about what I learned concerning the Narbonne family and home. On the web there was so much history concerning them and I’ve quoted three different ones here… One of the best preserved specimens of domestic colonial architecture of the seventeenth century is the Narbonne house on Essex Street. Salem Mass. which was built in 1680.and is sound ... moretoday and good for another century at least. Belonging to a period in which the colonists had very little money to lavish on their homes the house represents the conservative tastes of the thrifty resident of Salem 100 years before the revolution. It was built by Thomas Ives. And it’s title passed through many hands before coming into those of Nicholas Narbonne, a sea captain in the East India Trade to whom it was left by an uncle in the early part of the last century. The captain died here and so did his wife, who lived to the ripe age of 95, passing away in 1890. They had a daughter, Mary A. Narbonne, who was born in the house and lived in it all her life. Dying in it at the age of 80, in 1905. Miss Narbonne was well known in Salem. Chiefly for her aversion to meeting strangers. She was a great reader and was content to live entirely by herself. In fact she rarely suffered anyone to remain long under her roof, although she greeted callers on their arrival at her door with stately courtesy. The house was well filled with old furniture and curios collected chiefly by her father and she was greatly annoyed by collectors, for whom she entertained a cordial contempt. On Mi
Original 1964 Blank Diary Perfect for Gifts Christmas Birthdays Graduation RARE
I’ve been selling antique handwritten diaries for over 25 years now but I’ve also been collecting antique blank diaries too. Can’t seem to pass up a good diary. Anyway I thought I’d start also selling on my site these blank diaries. When I started collecting them I realized they made wonderful gifts and so I’d give them to family and friends for birthdays. Christmas, graduation presents, etc. They make wonderful pieces too because there are particular years that are special to certain people; especially the year they are born or the year they graduate. That’s what makes them such unique gifts and with Christmas coming I thought it would be a great time to list them. All of the ones I’m listing are in almost mint condition but again, they are vintage so there’s always a little bit of wear. I’ll be listing them all on my site for a buy it now ... moreprice of $49.95 so check out my other auctions if you are interested in this sort of thing. Diaries(written in or blank) are becoming rarer and rarer and that’s another reason this makes such a wonderful gift. The diary up in this particular auction dates from 1964 and measures about 4 ¼” x 7” There’s an address section in the front and then the diary pages start. It’s a“page a day” type diary and in excellent condition however there is“ONE” handwritten entry in this one. It’s rather comical too and is as follows… January 23 rd. 1964. I hereby claim this a regional holiday in the name
1913 Handwritten Trip Diary R. J. Daly Chicago Univ Cunard Line Laconia 280pgs
Up for auction today is a 1913 handwritten diary originally belonging to Raymond James Daly or as he puts it on the first page of the diary… Diary of His Imperial Majesty R. J. Daly(Incognito as the Duke of Nowork) During his royal sojourn in divers parts of Europe. This diary consists of almost 280 pages of writing and it’s a large journal too measuring about 7 ¼” x 10 ½” and is 1” thick with all of the pages being written on. Because it’s so large I don’t have time to read it but I can guarantee it’s full of incredible writing. Raymond was born around 1892 and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1912 and in 1913 he takes a 4 month tour of Europe with some of his college buddies. I found him in the universities yearbook and this is what it said… 1912 University of Chicago Yearbook: Raymond James Daly. Beta Theta Pi. Ph.B. ... moreSpring Quarter 1912. Chicago Illinois; University High School; News Editor Daily Maroon; Associate Editor Daily Maroon; Associate Editor Cap and Gown; Chairman Publicity Committee Interscholastic Commission, 11; Blackfriars; Chairman Social Committee Senior Class; Secretary-Treasurer Undergraduate Council, 11; President Junior Class; Chairman Finance Committee Senior Prom, 12; University Marshal; Three-Quarters Club; Skull and Crescent; Order of the Iron Mask; Owl and Serpent. I also found a photo of Raymond in the yearbook. Sadly I don’t have the original but wanted to print this one up for you so you could get a better idea of what Raymond looked like. Raymond went on to become a stock broker and banker. There are also pieces of ephemera attached to many of the pages including his deck chair ticket from off the steamship. He sailed on board the Cunard Line R.M.S. Laconia. The first page starts off with him boarding the train and heading for New York on June 18 th. On June 24 th(8 pages later) he arrives at the dock after spending time in New York City and Boston. Sailing that night on board the Laconia. The next 25 pages are all about his time on board the ship and tho

Rev James Hope Arthur Archive Handwritten Diary Missionary to Japan Civil War
This group is a perfect example of why I never split up family lots. All of the items in this family archive really fit together like a puzzle and answer some very important questions I had that I could not find on the web. Opening each envelope was like a new surprise and new piece to that puzzle. Had all these pieces been split up I don’t think I would have ever experienced their amazing story in such a complete way; and yet there is still so much to discover about this family. I really enjoyed learning about them and what a life our main character lived. His name was Reverend James Hope Arthur. All the items belonged to the Arthur. Stow. Mason and Stevens families of Hartford CT, Eastport Maine. California and Japan. Japan is because one of the son’s was born in Tokio Japan in 1877 while his mother and father were missionaries there. There ... moreare so many amazing things about his lot and the family. First off the group came with an 1877 handwritten diary written by none other than Reverend James Hope Arthur while he was in Japan as a missionary. He’s been in Japan with his wife and two young boys for four years now and at the time this diary was written he becomes very sick and decides to sail back home to California at the end of May. He dies in December of this same year. However before he became a missionary he was a private in the Civil War in the 7 th Connecticut Volunteers. He was also a prisoner of war and confined in Libby Prison in Richmond I think for almost a year. He was also wounded in the knee in the battle of Tybee. N.C. While in Japan he was with the Reverend Mr. and Mrs. Brown whom he mentions quite often in the diary. I found a book by Mrs. Brown written in 1890 called; The Whole World Kin: A Pioneer Experience Among Remote Tribes and other labors of Nathan Brown. By Elizabeth W. Brown. 1890. She gives a brief biography on Rev. Arthur and I quote… Rev. James Hope Arthur had joined the mission in November. 1873. After spending the winter in the study of the language at Yokohama. Mr. and
Important 1873 Hancock NY Diary Records Dangerous Delaware River Log Rafting
Important 1873 Hancock NY Diary Records Dangerous Delaware River Log Rafting Description. Offered here is this historically valuable 1873 diary. This journal contains rare first-hand testimony to the dangers of rafting logs from forest to city markets upon raging flood waters. These exciting springtime adventures have gone largely unrecorded by historians. Though they weren't unheard of for young farm hands of the 19th Century living in the Northeast and some other parts of the country. Our writer is Palmer Lakin of Lake Como. Pa. Lake Como is located south of Hancock, N.Y. and relatively close to the Delaware River. Lakin made several of these daring trips to Trenton and New York City in the spring of this year. Like many young men of his era. Palmer farmed in warm weather and logged in cold. He, his family and friends would cut timber ... morefrom their properties or those of their employers in the winter. Using teams of horses or oxen, they would drag the logs on snow and ice to the river bank. The snow in the woods was four feet deep this particular winter. The timber would be piled awaiting the spring floods. When the ice went out and the swirling waters rose to their highest of the year. The logs were put in the river and lashed together into rafts. High water was necessary to get these rafts through the otherwise shallow spots in the river. Of course there were mishaps as these farmer-loggers attempted to ride and steer their crude crafts in the rushing waters. On April 6 Lakin wrote. While rafting, Charles Gears fell though the walls of ice and could not get out for some time. April 11 he described: Run two rafts. One to Stockport Lower Eddy, one to Nobody's Eddy. About noon Mat Metony was drowned in the river while rafting logs for Elmer King. Great excitement prevailed. Lakin recorded his progress downriver on the rafts daily starting on April 3. On April 17 he gives us a peek at the hardships involved: Started from Upper Blacks. Rained and hailed to a fearful rate. But business is business and on we we

I am so pleased to offer you today the wonderful old diary of a lady named Lucille Roberts from Washington D.C.For the years 1938, and 1939.It is a five year diary, but she just used it for these two years, usually using a half a page for each day.Lucille and her husband Albert, along with their little boy Jack, who is about a year and a half old,are living through some pretty tough times,in this depression era diary.Albert is a hard worker and works odd jobs for different people,to keep food on the table and take care of his family.Lucille works equally as hard around the house, carrying water from the spring to wash clothes with on a scrub board, sewing material onto the sleeves of little Jacks clothes to lengthen them, because he has outgrown them,as well as mending, redoing and altering many other things,to make them new again, and basically making ... moresomething out of nothing, and stretching every penny just as far as it would go.As the diary progresses, they seem to be doing better, and Albert works more regularly. They buy a couple of lots and move a little old trailer on it,and fix it up to live in until they could build a house. They ended up building a small building, tearing the trailer apart using every bit of it they could on the room they built. She spent most of her time with little Jack. They would walk to the store and pick up what they needed almost everyday, when they could. After one trip though,Albert got upset and said she didnt spend the money correctly, because she had spent all the weeks allowance and that he would do the grocery shopping from then on,and she could just get milk and bread. She talked about visiting friends, neighbors, and family, often sharing meals with each other.Albert did several odd jobs for different people who would sometimes send things like clothes their children had outgrown, and things they didnt need anymore, like pieces of furniture, etc, and Lucille and Albert both would make good use of them.Albert was very handy and seemed to be able to do almost anything, and often fixed up things th

WW II DIARY MANUSCRIPT 200 PAGES RARE SOLDIERS EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT HITLER DEATH
Up for auction is a rare diary and manuscript that is a fascinating account of the occupation of France three weeks after the D- Day invasion in 1944. This personal diary consists of 200 unnumbered typed pages as the diary states on the first page" The personal journal Sgt. Harley E. Herbert 3619870 Det A1c2 Co H 1st ECA Reg APO US ARMY" Herbert starts from his rail journey than Embarkation from New York crossing the Atlantic on a Liberty Ship and leaving for Europe. He than describes his experiences while stationed in England Scotland. He leaves for France soon after the invasion. He was not in an active combat role but he did see the aftermath of battles( all though his unit was strafed and bombed several times) and he describes German prisoners of war in many cases bombed out French cities and towns. His account is amazing and ... morereads like a novel. For its detailed and thoughtful descriptions of French civilians his interactions with many French families whom he befriended, and descriptions of what happened as the allied forces moved info France after D-Day. Some of his observations are quite comical and other details are reveling. For example the description of an America P-47 fighter comandered by a German fighter pilot who dropped a bomb on his unit. Or his remarks on a French city bombed by the Americans that killed many civilians, as well as other incidents. His description of the announcement of the Death of Hitler is quite interesting(The reactions from soldiers many seemed to think it was to good to be true) Some much is written about that I only skimmed the surface. His thoughts are eyeopening, and since he typed his diary its very easy to read. This diary documents his entire time in the service until he ships out and returns to the States. Here are some excepts and quotes form Herbert's diary April 5th. 1944 If it can be said that the day one leaves one's native land is a" Gorgeous day" than this was such. The sea was smooth with only a faint surge as a monster breathing; a

1887 Diary Travel West Train Robbery Butch Cassidy Colorado Mormon
1887 Diary Travel West Train Robbery Butch Cassidy Colorado Mormon Mormon Tom McCarty. Matt Warner and Butch Cassidy This is a great handwritten diary of a trip out west to Utah and Colorado in 1887. It includes daily entries of the activities as well as ledger entries recording tickets to Salt Lake City and much more. The most important entries are related to a train robbery that took place on November 3 rd outside of Grand Junction. This is robbery that many people believe was the first robbery of Butch Cassidy along with Tom McCarty and Matt Warner. It gives great detail about the robbery and is guaranteed original. It says in part: After passing Grand Junction. GREAT 1929 Handwritten Diary 25yr old Nurse New Haven CT Hospital Inez Lagrange
Up for auction today is the handwritten diary of Inez LaGrange who was a nurse at the New Haven Hospital in Connecticut during the time this diary was written; 1929. I found Inez on the genealogy sites but I’m a little confused. She was born in 1904 and all the directories from about 1925-1933 list her as a nurse in New Haven Connecticut. Here’s the part that confuses me a bit. The 1910 census when Inez is just 6 she is living with Elmer and Jeanette“Townsend” and it lists Inez as their daughter. It also lists a woman by the name of Caroline Lagrange who is Elmer’s sister-in-law who is widowed. So I’m assuming when Inez’s father died(or they divorced) they moved in with Elmer. Then the 1920 census shows her living with her 74 year old Aunt. Mary J. Lagrange, as are her brother and sister. Inez is still just 16 so I have no idea what happened ... moreto her mother. I didn’t research this much further but that gives you a better idea of what Inez life started out as. I would say that the diary is about 2/3 full of entries as there are 123 blank days. The days that she does write have some rather noteworthy entries and most are very interesting. She not only talks about her social activities but mainly writes about her work as a nurse. One very profound entry is simple and two days long but it really speaks to the times(1920’s) and to Inez character… July 13 th& 14 th. Sewed most of morning. A girl came in the evening, pregnant. Felt very sorry for her as grandmother is trying to shield her…Fairly busy morning. In P.M. Mrs. Evelyn and I went hunting for the“girl” which I wanted to help. There are tons of names too of the Doctors. Nurses and patients. I’ve listed many of those names below after the example entries here… 1929“January 1 st, On case at New Haven Hospital. Pegg Minor 15 yrs. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Minor. Dr. T. H. Russell. Rain and sleet. Turkey dinner such as it was. King George’s condition the same. Spent the evening at home. January 3 rd. Same case. Patient doing fine. Met Arthur

1913 Handwritten Diary 17yr old Ethel Woods Coty West Newton MA Steamer Meteor
The author of this diary. Ethel P. Woods, has such an interesting life and historical background. She was born in 1896 which makes her only 17 years old when writing this diary. She lived in West Newton Massachusetts. It represents a trip she takes to Europe in 1913 with her cousins Henry and Margaret and her father. Henry D. Woods. Before I get to the diary I must give you a background as to who her father is because when he died he left her a trust fund comprising most of his estate which was $1,500,000. Among other things he was a civil engineer. This is a rather long biography but worth reading as it has a lot to do with this diary and their trip to Paris… Henry Dickinson Woods was born in Paris. France. On October 3, 1852, the son of Henry Woods and Annie L. Dickinson) Woods. His father was long a member of the old-time firm of C. F. ... moreHovey and Company. Representing that house in Europe and making his home in Paris for thirty years. It was his custom to return to the United States at least once every four years in order. As an American citizen, to vote in the National elections. It was in Paris. Therefore, that his son, Henry Dickinson Woods spent his boyhood and received most of his education. With an interval of two years in 1866 and 1867 when he came to this country and attended a boarding school at Newport. R. I. In Paris. He attended the College Chaptal and, later, the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures. From which he was graduated in 1876. 1908 Handwritten Diary Cunard SS Lusitania Chicago Banker Reynolds & Outerbridge
I’ve had this diary for about 15 years now and for so many reasons it’s a very historical and collectable piece. The diary represents one man’s trip in 1908 to Europe on board the amazing and historical ship Lusitania. He himself is a wealthy Chicago banker and some very prominent and historical people are sailing with him and also sign his diary. Before I get to that. I want to tell you a little bit about this great ship. For those who don’t know much about her, here’s a brief background… RMS Lusitania was a British Ocean Liner. Holder of the Blue Riband and briefly the world’s biggest ship. She was launched by the Cunard Line in 1907. She was smaller than the White Star Line’s Olympic–class vessels but not by much and was just as opulent. Perhaps the most historical thing about the Lusitania was that in 1915 she was torpedoed and sunk by ... morea German U-boat. With the loss of 1198 lives. There is so much on the web concerning this ship. The photo you see in the scans above is one of the best shipping photos I’ve seen. I found it on the web and scanned it as it shows the Lusitania at the end of the first leg of her maiden voyage. New York City harbor. Now. Fair warning. This description is going to be long but there’s no other way to describe this fabulous diary. The diary originally belonged to George M. Reynolds who was a wealthy Chicago banker. Here is his obituary… Birth: Jun. 11. 1862. Death: Dec. 19. 1935 George M. Reynolds Death Comes Today After Short Illness Utica. Ill. George M. Reynolds, 78, for many years prominent in the affairs of LaSalle County and state of Illinois, this county's representative in the Illinois senate from 1927 to 1930, died at his residence here at 3 a.m. Thursday. Death came following a critical illness of one week. A son of pioneer LaSalle county residents. Mr. Reynolds had always been associated with the growth of the community in which he lived, taking a prominent part in the public life of the county, socially, politically and in commerce. He was born on the Reynolds f
1931 Diary/Mate on 1st US Merchant Ship to dock in Russia after WW1
1931 Diary/Mate on 1st US Merchant Ship to dock in Russia after WW1 The SS Exford is credited as the first US ship to dock at a USSR port since WW1. In 1931. In March 1919 she was also the first US ship to dock in Hamburg Germany since the start of WW1. She was originally a WW1 cargo vessel, later a merchant ship in a variety of capacities. A Google search will produce a wonderful amount of colorful history. William B. Ahlers was a crewman on the ship on its 1931 voyage carrying"machinery for Odessa and Novosibirsk USSR" The diary is the 5-year variety. And although there appears a varying degree of dedication to entries, the first year is 1931 and his entries are clear and straightforward and cover the year beginning Friday April 24 1931, the day he"reported aboard Exford" He writes of his duties, mostly typical of a ... morecrew hand such as cleaning the deck and wheelhouse and polishing brasses and loading and unloading cargo. He also notes, in almost every entry, the primary concern of every sailor, the weather. Often the manner, in retrospect, give a good strong visual accounting.rolled out 3.45 am lookout 4-6 heavy sea ship pitching and shipping[ water- 70 F Entered Gulfstream in INDIGO water[my capitals] steered 4-6 Overcast" Other times he is at home in New Jersey(reference to Jersey City? I think, close enough to the docked Exford to ride his bicycle there(or sometimes the train) He is doing dockyard-type work on the ship, apparently preparing it for the next voyage. He also is doing extensive rebuilding of an automobile(major items, he is clearly talented in this regard) Fascinatingly, he is an avid movie buff during this part of his life and, not less than weekly notes a movie he's just seen. The Cisco Kid, Shanghai Love, Alex Hamilton, and literally dozens more. He is definitely educated(without a single misspelling to note) and although he's not an exuberant writer. His quiet personality comes through. And I find it of some obscure interest that h e writes with a pen that is a
1911 HANDWRITTEN DIARY/ HALLIE CHRISTIE/ROCK CREEK KANSAS!BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN!
Up for auction today is the diary of Miss Hallie D. Christie from Rock Creek.Coffey,Kansas for the year 1911.Actually the diary begins March1st,and ends Dec.31st.Hallie lived with her mother and father, her two sisters, and her brother. She turned 31 years old this year, and goes all over town each week giving lessons,Im assuming piano or singing)because she doesnt say, taking the same route each day,and staying at different peoples homes when shes too far away to go home at night. She must have been a good teacher, because she was very busy. She talks about all kinds of things, sewing, she goes camping, traveling by horse, and by train, visiting, many, many people, family and friends, going to church, taking a church trip to Kansas City Kansas, and Kansas City,Mi.I was waiting, while reading this to see if she had a boyfriend or went on dates, but she never ... moredid, and at 31 years old,I thought that a bit odd. There is a cut out flower tucked inside the diary that says on the back,At Mr. Schwinger's March,15,05"I dont know what it means, but it must have been important to her. After doing a very little research,I found that she married in 1918 to a man named Daniel Jesse Miles, who was 10 years older than she was.She was 38 when she married, and I didnt see where she ever had any children. She wrote about gypsys coming to visit, about someone coming over for their"hot meal"about receiving her Modern Prisilla magazine, about going camping and having a scare in the night that the horse got loose, but found out the next morning that it didnt, about going to the Dr. a couple of times, but she never said why, about people being sick and dying, different weddings she attended, about the Star Grain Lumber Yard catching fire and burning one day while she was in town, about the children at the church being blacked, and dressed like little,I will not write the word here, because I would not want to offened anyone, because it is offensive to me)It made me feel a bit differently about this apparently educated, church going christian lady.It just
1912-13 Handwritten Diary of Artist Edith Whitcomb Morrell Meets Dr. Carl Jung
I’m in the process of working on a diary project and therefore will be selling several of the diaries I’ve had in my private collection for a buy it now price. I don’t have time to thoroughly research these diaries like I usually do but if they got into my private collection it’s because they had something wonderful and unique about them. This journal was written by a women and her name was Edith Whitcomb Morrell. She lived in Gardiner. Maine. She was an artist. I’ve learned she did illustrations for books. And also did some painting. She was considered an accomplished impressionist. Her primary subjects were portraits. Landscapes, and children in oil colors and pastels. All you have to do is put her name in the Google search engines and you can see her artwork. The first part of the journal begins May 28, 1912 with a trip to Montreal. And ... morecontinues across the Atlantic. She’s sailing on a ship called“ Lake Erie” which was an Allan Line Royal Mail Steamer. She writes in the Journal until June 28. 1912, and then she puts the journal aside during the time she was in Europe. Almost all of these pages are devoted to getting to the docks and then shipboard entries. This first part consists of 18 handwritten pages. There is an entry for May 28. 1912 through June 11, 1912; and then nothing until June 28, 1912. Note how close her sailing is to the sinking of the Titanic which occurred in April of this same year. The next entry is dated March 8, 1913. She is aboard the SS Berlin and is heading back to the United States. There is an entry for March 8. 9, 11, 13, and 17. These five entries total 18 pages also. The SS Berlin arrived at Ellis Island on March 18. Remember I didn’t read this diary but I’m wondering if she spent from May of 1912 to March of 1913 in Europe? Most of these entries are also while on board the ship. This is where it gets good or I should say even better. Edith. Our well known artist, has 9 pages of drawings in this diary and most of it is life while on board the ships. I’ve scanned many of

1914 Handwritten Diary 18yr old Mabel Gunning Tolono ILL Quiver Beach Trip 186pg
Up for auction today is a very charming diary originally belonging to a young woman by the name of Mable Gunning who lived in Tolono Illinois. Mable was either 18 or 22 and the reason I’m not sure of her age is because I found her and her family on two census records and one said she was born in 1892 and one said in 1896. I’m leaning toward the later because in the beginning of this diary there are 16 pages of autographs from her schoolmates while attending Sacred Heart Academy in Springfield Illinois. This was in 1913. After that her diary entries start and this is for the year 1914 and there are 186 pages of entries. She begins on January 1 st. 1914 and the last entry is on August 25 th. 1915. Then in the back she’s written a list of 62 names and at the top of that list is the title, Girl Boarders at S. H. A. 1913. At first I though her ... moreentries for each day were going to be just a line or two and that’s the way January is but by the time February rolls around Mable decides she has much more to tell and her daily entries become much longer. She a very social young lady; attends many dances. Travels on the train, has a particular group she hangs around with which she calls“The Big Bunch” takes a vacation in August of 1915 to Quiver Beach and so much more. Then in the summer of 1914 a new“Roller Rink” opens up in the area and much of her time is spent there. In fact the entire community is consumed with the new“rink” Then at the end of the summer a Hypnotist comes to town for about a week and sets up his tent. Quite the exciting and entertaining little town I’d say. Sadly her grandfather also passes away this year. Then there’s a two very sad fires in the area. One kills a family and the other one burns a whole block in town including the sewing school she attends. I want to mention. As I think it’s one of the reasons this diary is so charming, the fact that she loves the word“Some” For instance she’s always saying phrases such as, Some time we had” or“Some fun” or“Some crowd” or“Some dance” As

1871 HANDWRITTEN POST CIVIL WAR DIARY!S SHAWMUT/BOSTON MASS/CUTS LEG/DEATHS/WORK
Up for auction today is the 1871 diary written by Mr.S.Shawmut from Boston Mass. This diary.Written not long after the Civil War is a fine example of how tough life was for people back then. This man lived with his parents and worked hard all over the area, trying to make a living. When he couldnt find work around home he went away and found work else where, writing friends and family often. He talked about many things, going hunting, fishing,to a dance, about his friends, and family. He talks about cutting his leg on Thanksgiving Day,with a lathe hatchet, that keeps him out of work for a few days, but not many, believe me,he gets right back out there working very soon after. He also rolls a log over his foot and is only away from work a very short time, again. He talked about deaths, and when and what time they happened, about his father being sick, and being ... moresick himself, and of course work, and helping his father on their farm, and going to Church. He was a simple man,who lived a simple, but hard life, and didnt have much education,as you can tell by his entries, and spelling. To give you a better idea of the contents of this diary, here are a few examples of his entries. 1864 Handwritten Diary Almanac Civil War Bloomfield Missouri Battle Col Jeffers
This was such an interesting diary to research. Now I don’t know if I’m right about everything but things really seem to be pointing in the following directions. First off this is a civil war era almanac that acts also as a diary. It’s for the year 1864. There is a name on the front and I can’t quite make out his last name but it could be Louis Napoleon. I’ve scanned a close-up of the name itself. Most of the entries have to do with the weather and also the deaths that occurred that year of the folks in the area. However. There are some very interesting entries about the civil war. One in particular really caught my attention. Even tho our author doesn’t write the town he is from there are several clues. The first being the mention of St. Louis so I knew it was Missouri and I did find a Louis Napoleon that lived in St Louis on the 1880 census. ... moreSecondly he talks about going to the“Cape” so I was thinking of Cape Girardeau area. Then there was this entry. September 21. 22, 23, Great excitement about Southerners coming in. September 24 th. Jeffers men come in about sundown. Had a little fight with some of Lackey’s_ of Militia. 1 st Lieut. Southerner and one Federal private wounded. Federal brought to my house. Died Sunday about ½ 11 o’clock. Southerners left town about 1 or 2 o’clock. Camped it was said in the neighborhood. Left Sunday. Heard of at Mullertown” I’m not sure of that last name of the town. Now when I went to look up Jeffers in Missouri in 1864 here’s what I found out and I quote… William L. Jeffers” After several relatively quiet months. Jeffers attacked Bloomfield for a second time on September 22. 1864. This was during Gen. Sterling Price's celebrated"Raid" through Missouri. With a mere 200 men available to defend the town. The Union commander started for Cape Girardeau with wagons filled with supplies. Jeffers attacked the fleeing Unionists near the Caster River. East of Bloomfield. The Union troops offered only feeble resistance. But enjoyed good fortune when their wagons

FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL CIRCA 1857 MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL OF THEATRICAL PLAYS. This extraordinary 19th century volume was owned by Charles A. Carleton whose signature appears in a couple of places.
