It is not matted nor framed, being sold as a single sheet as show in the main picture. This map is from the New Topographical Atlas Of The State of Pennsylvania With Descriptions Historical. Scientific, and Statistical. By Professor Henry F. Walling and O.W. Gray, Civil& Top'l. Engineer. Published in 1872 by Stedman, Brown& Lyton, Philadelphia. The map has fantastic coloring to it and is a great period county map. With towns, cities, railroads, roads, etc. of the time. Excellent, detailed and interesting period map of these counties. The map is generally in Very Good condition. There is some wear and browning along the edges. There are some creases and small tears around the edges of the paper. But they do not extend into the map area. There are tears along the left side where it was originally bound. A darker stain is on the right edge and other dings here and there, as well. This map is a great piece of US history! It will look very nice when framed. Please note that while I have included pictures of the front board of the Atlas and the Title Page from the Atlas this map was taken from. They are NOT included in the sale, as they are reference pieces to determine authenticity for the other maps. I would be happy to include a copy if requested. FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT MATHEMATICS BOOK. This terrific early volume was compiled from 1839-42 by Calvin Shaffner at Lititz Academy. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Volume is remarkable in every respect. From its sheer size[nearly 300 pages of handwritten entries] and the broad range of subjects covered, to the neatness of the hand writing and artistic flare of the compiler. This is one of those rare gems that should be seen to be fully appreciated. One of the more striking features is the fraktur inspired calligraphy which adorns volume throughout. Text contains numerous titles and page headings elaborately applied with an artistic flare seldom seen in early math cypher books. Another notable feature is the scope of subjects receiving detailed attention. Ranging from mathematics[mensuration of superfices, solids, cylindrical ... moreshapes, arithmetic, rule of three, vulgar fractions, algebra, cubical measure, etc. to the trades[bricklayer's work, mason's work, carpenter's work, slater's and tiler's work, plasterer's work, painter's and glazier's work, vaulted and arched roof's, etc. to business applications[interest, fellowship, loss and gain, custom house allowances, book keeping, journals, ledgers, invoices, expenses, etc. Every page is exploited to the fullest extent. Condition: Rare book remains in good condition[see images] Volume bound in original leather backed marbled boards with matching leather tips; cover worn with spine flaking and tips well chipped. Couple of loose leaves, generally clean internally. Folio contains contains about 283 pages of handwritten entries with many calligraphic embellishments; and measures approx 12" tall x 7.5" wide x 1.25" thick. Dauphin County PA Sheriff/Coroner Journal/Ledger 1805-1807; Murder,Fornication++
DESCRIPTION Of significant historical importance to Dauphin County Pennsylvania and to life in early America. I am honored to offer this magnificently handwritten and detailed accounts of arrests, convictions, public office holders, etc. beginning 1805, ending 1807. Not clear on who kept this ledger, either the sheriff or coroner of Dauphin. The Coroner of 1805 was Obed Fahenstock, Esq. later Jacob Wain, Esq. The journal is full with every page being used. Without counting. I'm guessing there are 150- 200 pages, about 12.5" by 8" by 1" thick. Some charges are: Theft. Larceny, Assault& Battery, Tippling House(selling liquor without a license) Fraud, Murder, Fornication(a Lot of people met that charge! Bastardly, Adultery, etc. Some defendants were noted as being Negro and Ignoramus(a Lot of them too! Most interesting(to ... moreme) was a finding of guilt for murder with a sentence of"execution by hanging. To be hung by the neck until death. May God have mercy on his soul" Names of all Justice's Of The Peace and Township Constables are written several times in the journal. Names are also given for all those being charged and jury members that convicted or acquitted the defendants. Names are also given for each carriage ride or march to the Jail of Dauphin County. All calligraphy is in ink on thicker paper stock. No obvious signs of foxing. No torn pages. Some pages are loose, cover is also loose but it all appears to be complete and WOW! What and interesting find that would be a terrific resource for charting Dauphin County history and for any geneology project. This is a once in a lifetime offering. Good Luck! The J. A. and E. Eichelberger store at Saxton. PA was first established in 1867 by J. A. Eichelberger(1844-1892) and Eli Eichelberger(1840-1915) Eli was the son of James Eichelberger of Hopewell Furnance, and he enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in Co. F, 8th PA Reserves at the beginning of the Civil War. He was promoted to Captain after John Eichelberger, the existing commander, was wounded at Fredricksburg and discharged. J. A. Eichelberger was a member of Co. I, 194th PA Regiment, and was engaged in iron manufacture and mercantile business after the War. The store later remained in business as E. Eichelberger and Son in Saxton, PA. The exterior of this historic heavy ledger(16" x 7" x2 1/2" is bound in leather and shows age wear but is in good shape. The spine reads"Day Book" Inside. The upfront name index is damaged, ... morewith some pages torn with missing portions, and the pages have been repaired to some extent and reattached with archival tape. The remainder of the pages of the ledger(pp. 6-864) are fully filled out with detailed individual accounts from the 1870's, are in very good condition, and are tightly bound. There is an ad for"Orient Safety Lamp" glued to the last page. Individual account owners have not been researched, but probably include a number of Pennsylvanian Civil War veterans(I've included a small listing of the members of the 8th PA Reserve, Co. F for review with the ledger) This is an excellent opportunity to own an important historic ledger from the post-Civil War era illustrating the mercantile business in Pennsylvania. 1890-1894 Bucks County 4 Bills of Sale with Store Ledger from Haycock Run, PA
This is a great piece of Bucks County history. It is a handwritten store ledger of names in Haycock Township. Bucks County, PA from 1890 to 1894. Four bills of sale are included with this ledger. They state E. A. Frankenrield was a dealer in dry goods, groceries, notions, flour, boots, shoes, drugs, hardware. One sheet is a Monthly Statement with a handwritten date of Nov. 23, 1894. It is for the sale of 168 lbs of sugar to Wm. Sleifer. The other two sheets have pencil notes on them. These sheets have Office at the top and Express and Freight Office, Perkasie, Penna. under the store name. The fourth and largest sheet has Agent for H.F. Hager's Celebrated Fertilizers under the name with some pencil notes. Inside the first page is stamped"E. A. Frankenfield, Dealer in General Merchandise, Haycock Run, PA" There are 225 numerically ... morestamped pages. The first entry is 1890 for Abel McCarty. The last entry is M.D. Frankenfield, 1894. On page 124, Haycock Township is listed as a customer dated 1891. The ledger show entries of"Mdse" purchased, the date and the amount on the left side of the page. Across from that, within the right part of the page, is date of payment, the amount, and the method of payment. Many times payment is cash. But other entries include by Hauling, by Prod(produce) by Beans, by Eggs, Shoulder, Squab, Baskets, Mdse, to name a few. The very first pages of this ledger are names in alphabetical order with numbers across from them. I have no idea what they reference. These names take up the A-Z portion of the front of this ledger. Then page 1 begins as a numerical stamp in the upper right of the page. This ledger is 12 1/2" high and 7 1/2" wide. Along the side of the binding is printed the word LEDGER at the top. On the bottom is a large number 6. See photos) Condition is very good. The pages are in excellent shape with the black and red ink clear and bright. Kurr- This hotel register was custom printed for this hotel/ inn/ tavern- It covers the dates of April 27, 1887 through June 15, 1892- There are 550 pages with less than ten with no signatures ... moreon the page- There are easily 6,500 signatures throughout the book Each page has the same set of local area business advertisements printed around the edge of the page- Businesses include a candy maker. Blacksmith, veterinary surgeon, druggists, carriage maker, Reading Lager Beer& Porter, undertaker, Star Shoes, liquor distributor, furniture maker, cigar maker, shoemaker, butcher, mercantile, etc. Signatures include numerous people from the surrounding area to others as far away as Paris and Australia- Traveling show people. Bands, Railroad employees, Reading Brewing Company, U.S. Geological Survey, Wheelman Clubs(Bicyclists) Sleighing parties, Prohibitionists, Politicians, Traveling businessmen, etc. There may be some famous people within the thousands of signatures since I have only made a 30 study of the book.
