PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A TEN-DAY AUCTION. Up for auction is an interesting. Intriguing, and educational- if at times hagiographical or hyperbolic- Victorian-era leather-bound volume comprising dozens of biographies, some of them illustrated, of prominent citizens of Middlesex County, Connecticut. The book was published by J. H. Beers, Chicago, in 1903, and I would imagine it is a first and only edition as such, but I can't be certain. This is all new and fascinating to me. But this type of publication is known as a"mug book" the primary meaning of which today has to do with criminals not prominent businessmen, politicians, etc. as we know, though there'd be some overlap if such a tome were put out today) but which is something different altogether in genealogical parlance. Such books abound with rich local histories and ... moregenealogical details, and this one is no different. I found a fascinating article on mug books by Rhonda Frevert. A librarian and historian, and I'll cut and paste a descriptive paragraph from it(with thanks to the author for making it possible for me to conduct excellent online research on the book I am selling) Late nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century mug books are collections of biographical sketches. A curiously rich source for geneologists[ sic] and historians alike. Typically these books were published only by advance subscription. If a person had the funds to subscribe. He or she(more often he) would have a biographical sketch in the book. For an extra fee, a photograph or sketch would be included. The publishers also might, as in the case of the Lake County mug book[note that this Illinois book included an entry for Abraham Lincoln] include sketches of presidents and governors. These biographies of the rich and famous helped publishers sell books to buyers who hadn't subscribed- and who weren't included among the sketches.
