A black& white engraving, and craft illustrations which are usually color as well. Plus many black& white illustrations throughout. All plates are present except one b& w engraving. The front cover is lacking and the first couple plates are de tached. Much wear to the spine& rear cover. Otherwise condition is good. With articles on fashion. Mikebooks122 proudly presents a copy of a RARE. ORIGINAL, 1853 EDITION OF: The Adirondack; or Life in the Woods. It was authored by the illustrious J.T. Headley. Published by Baker and Scribner. In New York in 1853. Our research could find only one other available copy. Mr. Headley was born on the 30th of December. 1814, at Walton, in New York, where his father was settled as a clergyman. It is a wild and romantic spot on the banks of the Delaware, and his early familiarity with its scenery doubtless occasioned much of his love of mountain climbing, and indeed his descriptive power. He commenced his studies with the law in view. But changed his plan; and after graduating, at Union College, became a student of theology, at Auburn. He was licensed in New York, and a church was offered him in that city, but his health was feeble, and his physician ... moredissuaded him from attempting to preach. Unwilling, however, to abandon his profession without an effort, he took charge of a small church in Stockbridge, in Massachusetts, where he thought he could give himself the most favorable trial, but after two years and a half, broke down completely, and planned a European tour and residence for his recovery. He went to Italy in the summer of 1842. Intending to spend the winter there, the summer in Switzerland, and the next winter in the East. The state of his health, however, led to some modification of his design; he remained in Italy only about eight months, traveled some time in Switzerland, passed through Germany and the Netherlands, went into Belgium, thence to France, then over England and Wales, and finally home, having been absent less than two years. His health being worse than when he went abroad, he gave up all idea of following his profession, and turned his attention to literature. Headley explains his work in the preface. 1890s Nurseryman's Speciman Tradebook - 115 Color Plates Stecher Litho - Leather
Presented here is a beautiful antique Nurseryman's Trade Sample Book or Specimen Guide. This book was specially created for Nelson Bogue owner of Batavia Nurseries from Batavia. New York. It is a leather bound book measuring 8.75" long by 5.5" wide with gold lettering on the front. Overall the covers are quite nice, there is a 1.25" tear at the spine in the top layer of leather and creasing of the leather across the top at spine. Otherwise some scuffing or denting to covers can be seen but in general covers are quite good for age. Inside boards have marbled paper that show wear but no tears or cuts. The binding is good and strong and individual plates are well attached. There are a total of 115 full color lithographed plates featuring fruits. Roses, shrubs, and trees. The large majority of plates are from Stecher Lithography ... moreCompany, but there are a few from Rochester Litho and Nicholson Company, and one from the Horticultural Art Journal. The plates measure approximately 8 1/4" tall by 5 7/16" wide. Overall pages are in very good shape, the majority have no issues to note outside of minor soiling. The list below gives full details for each plate and any issues. The photos above show some examples including some of the worse plates. When listing a tear it is usually from a bump- the tear isn't damaging to other areas or creased farther down. Many are not easily noticed. There are several versions or ages to the Stecher plates. Some state Hand-Made, others list copyright, and the actual logo varies. All of the Rochester Litho plates have a description of the specimen and other details including the Batavia Nurseries details(one example shown in photo) One plate has been torn from book along the crease at top but entire plate is included. Another plate has colored pencil tracing the pear outline. The large majority of the plates have no issues at all but(as my feedback can attest) I try to point out all issues that can be seen and review the pages as critically as I can. Book will b

1812: Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol I & II Wallis - Fine Leather & 21 Plates
Life of Napoleon Bonaparte Editor: D. Hughson Printed ca 1812 J. Wallis. London Volume I& II For offer is a very early book about Napoleon- published while he still was alive and active. This is a two volume set. Which was followed up by a 3rd volume a few years later(not included here unfortunately) It appears to initially have been released in a series of issues in wrappers, and later on bound together. There are in total 21 full plate engravings in both volumes(13 in vol 1, 8 in vol 2- incl. the frontispieces) and I'm not sure if that makes a complete collection or not(any additional info would be welcome) They are a mix of portraits and illustrations of particular events. The bindings themselves are in full leather with fantastic gilt decorations of an eagle( A bee and a crown encompassing the letter"N" on the spines, ... moreas well as gilt edges on the boards. Both boards in volume have detached, but apart from that the volumes look absolutely gorgeous. There are hardly any other flaws to mention, except some joint wear in vol 2, some dulling to the gilt at the edges and very slight corner bumping. The spine labels have very slight wear on vol 1, but on vol 2 the title has chipped a little bit and is becoming lose. I do not know if the bindings are contemporary or made a bit later. But they do look as if they are from that era. The interior looks just as great as the exterior: white pages. Very little foxing and scribblings. There is an original ownership inscription by a"W. Hudson" in old ink in vol I. Also in the same volume is another inscription stating that the set was bought in 1928 and inherited in 1966. For anyone interested in Napoleon and French history. Who is considered one of the greatest bird artists, was noted not only for his remarkable illustrations of birds, but his presentation of the birds in their natural habitats. Fuertes produced more than 3,000 bird illustrations during his career. Fuertes illustrated the Birds of New York books. Worked as an illustrator for National Geographic magazine and among many other highly acclaimed works is even credited as helping to popularize bird watching thorugh a series of collectable cards he did for Arm and Hammer Baking Soda which were distributed in the 1920s and 1930s. But most inportant of all, Willis presented.the first approach to a functional anatomy of the cerebral circulation. He applied for the first time the knowledge of William Harvey's brilliant discoveries to the special problems of the blood supply to the brain. Rare early edition of Konewka's illustrations accompanied by corresponding text from the play in English. The English Text from Bayard Taylor's translation. Twelve chapters, each with an illustrated initial and and intricate silhouette plate, plus a title page design, these illustrations for Faust by German artist Paul Konewka(18411871) date from 1865, although this copy here are from a later edition. Konewka was a silhouette cutter so while these may look like ink illustrations theyre actually paper silhouettes displaying a formidable level of detail and complexity. Whatever the technique, the story itself is immediately recognisable from the characters even if none of the more dramatic scenes are represented.
