4 Handwritten Diaries Alfred Loomis Fenner Cazenovia Madison Co NY 1871-90 FULL
I will be listing several diaries and diary lots as“buy it now’s” because I’m trying to get through my inventory and am working on some other diary projects so sadly I don’t have time to thoroughly read and research particular diaries. This group of four diaries all belonged to Alfred Loomis who was from Fenner and Cazenovia. Madison County New York. They date from 1871, 1874, 1878 and 1890. They are completely full of handwritten entries except for the 1878 diary and that only has 15 black pages in the beginning as his entries start on January 16 th. Other than that they are completely full. Alfred was born in 1835. Was the postmaster at one time, married Harriet and had three children Frank, Nannie and George. He was the son of George and Mary Loomis. I believe he was a farmer but his entries are not just about farming but so many other ... moreevents; many deaths, court cases, social activities and more. I’ve scanned several pages for you to see examples of some of those entries. On average they measure about 3” x 6” and the covers are quite worn but the pages and bindings look great. Wonderful price too for 4 diaries from one family.

1864 Handwritten Civil War Era Diary Albany Co NY Trip West to St Louis Omaha NE
This is such a rare diary. Out of the 25 years of collecting handwritten diaries and having read over 6.000 of them, I’ve only come across about 5(that I can remember) which were anything like this. The diary represents the incredible year of 1864, Civil War year of course. and every day has a full handwritten entry. I don’t know our authors name but there are several clues in this diary which will help in your research to find him. I believe our author is a young man. Possibly in his 20’s or 30’s. Not sure why he’s not fighting in the Civil War, although he does say he’s escaped the draft, but he sure gets his share of excitement living and traveling during these tumultuous times. He lives in Albany County New York or at least I think he does(which I’ll get to in a minute) and in the winter sells his farm and heads West going as far as Omaha ... moreNebraska. However he spends most of that time in St. Louis Missouri selling rat poison boxes to the local businesses and working in a saloon. It’s really a fascinating read. Let’s start from the beginning. The town that is mentioned most in this diary(while he’s in New York) is Amity. However he also mentions Green Island and is close enough to Troy to skate to it during the winter. In my researches I saw that the town of Amity is in another county then Green Island and Troy but I did see that there was an Amity Street in the town of Cohoes which is also in Albany County. So for all of you who know this area well. Was there once a little village of Amity nearby? In the beginning of this diary he sells his farm to a man with the last name of Flansburgh whom I found out was one of the biggest pioneer families in Albany County. Garret Flansburgh come to the area in the late 1700’s and owned a farm in Albany County. In fact I found photo on the web(dated 1911) showing the Garret Flansburgh Farm in Berne. Albany County New York. Is this the farm that use to belong to our author? I’ve included a scanned copy of the photo here just in case. So I think if you researched a

CAPTAINS COURAGEOS BY RUDYARD KIPLING 1917 PUBLISHED BY THE CENTURY CO OF NY
This sale is for a vintage FULL RED LEATHER hardback edition entitled“Captains Courageous. subtitled“A Story of the Grand Banks, by Rudyard Kipling(1865-1936) With illustrations by I. W. Taber. It was published by The Century Co. NYC, in 1917. This is a classic Kipling novel on the New England fishing fleet. Harvey Cheyne is the son of a wealthy railroad magnate raised(and quite thoroughly spoiled) by his over-indulgent parents. Washed overboard from a transatlantic steamship and rescued by fishermen on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The young Harvey cannot persuade them to take him ashore, nor convince them of his wealth. However, the Captain of the We're Here, Disko Troop, offers him a job as part of the crew until they return to port. With no other choice, Harvey accepts. There follows a series of trials and adventures where the ... moreboy learns to adjust to his rough new life. And with the help of his friend, the captain's son, Dan Troop, he makes fine progress. Eventually, the schooner returns to port and Harvey wires his parents. They rush to the fishing town(Gloucester, Massachusetts) and find to their amazement that their child has become an industrious, serious and considerate young man. Harvey's mother rewards the seaman who initially rescued Harvey. Harvey's father rewards Captain Troop by hiring his son. Dan, to work on his prestigious tea clipper fleet, and is delighted at his son's new maturity and their relationship dramatically improves even as Harvey decides to begin his career with his father's shipping lines. Written when Kipling was 31. And not long married to the sister of his American agent, this is his only book to be set entirely in America. 6 Handwritten Lewis Co NY Diaries Leyden Castorville Montague Indian Dr. 1873-91
All five of these diaries came from Lewis County New York. They date from 1873. 1877, 1880, 1889 and 1891. I don’t know if the three men that wrote in these diaries were related but since I got them all together and since they are all from Lewis County I thought I’d sell them as a lot. I only skimmed through the diaries to gather some information and some pages to scan. The first diary from 1873 belonged to N. J. Snell of Castorland New York. It looks like Castorland is a village in the southeast part of the town of Denmark New York. I believe his first name is Norton. He was born on April 16 th in 1842. He works in a store but also talks about working with boats and on the landing so I’m assuming this is on the Beaver River? The diary is full with a handwritten entry for every day. The second diary is from 1877 and belonged to B. W. Young ... moreand in fact so does the third diary of 1880. He is from Montague. Lewis Co. New York in the first diary then he lists his residence as Gardner’s Corner’s in the 1880 diary. The interesting thing about these diaries is that he talks about an“Indian Doctor” quite a bit. Both diaries are full of entries for every day. The fourth and fifth diaries belong to Milton J. Douglas and he lived in Port Leyden. Lewis Co. New York. He might possibly be a road surveyor but I can’t say that for sure. Both of these diaries are also full. On average they measure about 3” x 6” All are in fair to good shape.
