Southern reactions ranged from forcing a bookseller in Mobile. The book also helped create a number of stereotypes about Blacks, many of which endure to this day. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mammy; the Pickaninny stereotype of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. In recent years, the negative associations with Uncle Tom's Cabin have. To an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a"vital antislavery tool. In the first year of publication, 300,000 copies of Uncle Tom'

None of these novels reached the success of Stowe's book, but some went through a number of printings and were widely read in the North. As a group they're interesting for several reasons- for what they say about race and about sectionalism, and for what they

He went through Union City while we were there, but as I was on duty the day he went through, I did not see him, nor have not heard from him since. It has rained almost very day for the last two months, consequently the mud is awful deep. We have had snow to the depth of 15 inches down here this winter. signed] William Demoney. 6 Handwritten Diaries Jennings Farmington ME Civil War Vet. Battle of Gettysburg
I want to start off by saying that on a weekly basis I get questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. So I thought I’d post something to ease everyone’s mind before they buy. I am very passionate about diary collecting and history and I can’t even imagine buying a diary lot from one particular family(such as this wonderful lot) and then splitting them up and selling each separately. Its heart wrenching when I see this happening and you have my promise that if I have more then one diary. No matter how many I have, I will always sell family lots together in one auction. But I think it’s a good question you should always ask your sellers just in case you want to try and keep a lot together. And with that said… Up for auction are 6 handwritten diaries and all of them belonged to Civil War Veteran ... moreAsa Jennings of Farmington Maine. They represent the years. 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1890 and 1891. Asa was part of Co. G. 17 th Regiment Maine Volunteers. In a book called“A History of Farmington Franklin County Maine. From the Earliest Explorations to the Present Time” I found the following information… Asa Jennings was a native of New Portland and a farmer by occupation. After a residence of several years in Wilton. He removed to Farmington. Which has since been his home. Like his father and grandfather was a patriot and soldier, entering the United States Service in 1862(August 18 th to be exact) as a private. Co. G 17th Regiment, Maine Vol. Having a special faculty for hospital work. He was transferred to that branch of service. At Gettysburg he was attached to the First Division, Third Corps Hospital, having a surgeons charge of several hundred disabled soldiers for some days, his duties until the end of the war when he received an honorable discharge after nearly three years of service on March 16 th. 1865. He applied for a pension in 1872. On December 5 th. 1848 Asa married Betsey Billings, daughter of Toppan Eaton of Wilton. She was born June 16 th. 1

Up for bid is a 1861 through 1880 hand written journal by Jacob Rhodes from Indiana. The journal has approximately 70 pages front and back of Jacob's writing's. He was a preacher of some sort and much of his writings pertain to the Bible. God, and the condition of humanity. He wrote down many of his sermons. On December 4, 1861 he wrote a journal entry about the Civil War, specifically the Ft. Sumter attack by the"Rebels" South Carolinians and how the fight lasted several days and then they trampled the flag and replaced it with the Palmetto flag. A few days later he wrote about England threatening to start a war with the U.S unless they return two traitors to England named Mason and Slidell who were taken by Captain Wilkes. Jacob also wrote a letter, which was inside his journal, to a friend in 1880 and mentioned the Presidential ... moreelection asking what his friend thought about it and that he hopes the right man wins. There are a lot of interesting entries but I did not have time to read them all so I am highlighting what I found when I thumbed through the book. The first few pages of the book are account entries from 1850s concerning items he bought and sold, the remainder of the book is crammed full of his personal writings. The book is 12"x8" and the cover has wear that can be seen in the photos. The inside pages have expected discoloration and some stains but is in overall very good condition. Questions are always welcome. Thank you. PAYMENT& SHIPPING We accept payment through PayPal. On assignment for the Herald, Young joined the former president's entourage and faithfully recorded every detail of the grand tour- the sightseeing, official visits, travel conditions, and Grant's candid discussions with heads of state and other notables about the Civil War and other matters of state. 1863 UNION CIVIL WAR PRIVATES LETTER-19th IND. BATTERY OHIO LIGHT ARTILLERY
Very interesting 2+ pp. Union Civil War Private's letter. Dated Camp near Lexington, Kentucky, Mar 23 1863, written on patriotic bordered stationery with small blind embossed American flag at upper left with legend"Union, from Private Orrin L. White, 19th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery, to his parents. The content reads. In part: I have not heard anything from home in some days. But as there is some excitement here at present, I thought perhaps you would like to hear from me. You see, the Rebs are trying to catch us in a trap, but I hardly think they will do it, although the report is that they have driven our forces back from Danville& across the Kentucky River about 20 or 25 miles from here. This report was brought in by a negro from Danville, and I rather think this report needs confirmation, though I think there ... moreis no doubt that there is quite a force at Danville and that the Rebs have driven our men from that place. Hurrah, there comes Ace with a letter for me. Must stop& read it. signed] O. F. Wait. Direct to Lexington KY. Orin L. Wait. 19 years of age, enlisted on Aug 6 1862 as a private. On Sep 10 1862 he mustered into the 19th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery. He was shot through the heart and killed, while talking to some comrades, at Kenesaw Mountain, on Jun 29 1864, and was buried at Marietta National Cemetery, Marietta, Georgia. The 19th Independent Battery was organized at Cleveland OH on Sep 10 1862. During Private White's service. The 19th Independent Battery fought, before he was killed, at the Battles of Campbell's Station, Rocky Faced Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, Pine Hill, and Kolb's Farm and the Assault on Kenesaw. 1862 CIVIL WAR NEW YORK ABOLITIONIST LETTER DEMANDING EMANCIPATION OF SLAVES
An original and important manuscript letter written during the Civil War by Dr. Henry A. Hartt to former New York Governor John A. King. Dated May 1, 1862, forwarding a copy of the Constitution of the"Liberty and Union Association" for King's approval and endorsement. The organization had been created to unite all those in favor of"Emancipation as the grand result" of the war, and to prevent the"threatened dangers of a reconstruction with slavery" At this time, President Abraham Lincoln was already considering freeing the slaves within the Confederacy, but not those in states that remained loyal. It was a major political issue, pushed strongly by the abolitionist movement who feared a peace with the South that would leave slavery intact. Two pages, size 5" x 8" folds, very good condition, no envelope.HENRY ... moreALLAN HARTT[c1815-1893] was a prominent New York physician and leader of the Abolitionist movement in the City, whose house was later marked for burning during the Draft Riots of 1863. Antique Handwritten Diary of Civil War Colonel - Coded Masonic Memory Jogger
I'm going to start out by saying this is a lengthy item to describe and do it justice so please bear with me. I believe this handwritten diary to be a very rare find. It was originally owned by a Civil War Colonel named Colonel John B Yates. It is written in a coded language and I have done a lot of research to determine what exactly this is. With the help of several professors we have determined it is a Masonic Memory Jogger. The Masons used many rituals and were expected to memorize them without having them written down where just anyone could see. By using the book"Illustrations of Masonry" by William Morgan 1827 I have been able to decipher bits and pieces of what this says. There is still a lot to be deciphered which I will leave to the curious mind who owns this gem after me. Colonel Yates served in Company A. Michigan ... moreEngineers and Mechanics. That regiment worked repairing bridges and railroads, building blockhouses and fortifications, having skirmishes with the enemy and taking part in the engagements of Bowling Green, Perryville, Stones River and on the march with Sherman's army, 1861-1865. Colonel Yates was from Albion, Michigan. One of his business cards was tucked in a pocket of the diary and there is a photo of this. Also tucked in a pocket was an invitation to a"Washington Ball" at the Union House, in Delhi Friday evening, Feb. 20, 1863 at 4 o'clock. I have a copy of Col. Yates death notice stating his birth date of Oct. 18, 1833, and his record of service during the Civil War. This was written by William T Sherman himself. A quote reads"Its journal of operation during the campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas would illustrate the absolute limit of man for physical labor. I have sometimes reproached myself for cruelty in imposing or allowing to be imposed, on it such hard and constant labor, and now desire to indorse the paper with an emphasis that will show that I was conscious of the fact. I will be much pleased if Col. Yates can be suitably rewarded for his pa

Antique 1st Edition CIVIL WAR ERA Book BEECHENBROOK RHYME OF THE WAR Preston
Offered for auction is this rare Civil War Era book titled BEECHENBROOK; A RHYME OF THE WAR by Margaret J. Preston and published by KELLY& PIET out of Baltimore in 1867. It has a title page date of 1867 and a copyright page date of 1866 and I believe is a first edition book. The author wrote a collection of poetry regarding the Civil War struggles making this a rather unusual book. The dedication reads. TO EVERY SOUTHERN WOMAN, WHO HAS BEEN WIDOWED BY THE WAR, I DEDICATE THIS RHYME, PUBLISHED DURING THE PROGRESS OF THE STRUGGLE, AND NOW RE-PRODUCED-AS A FAINT MEMORIAL OF SUFFERINGS, OF WHICH THERE CAN BE NO FORGETFULNESS. Very strong words for a book of rhyme. It has black and white illustrations and is a very readable book. There are 106 pages and it measures about 8 1/2" by 6" I would rate this book as fair condition as it ... morehas wear on the covers and spine with discoloration on the covers also. There is wear on the edges, but the pages have very light yellowing and foxing, less than one would expect from a book this old. The pages are still fairly tight to the spine and there are no loose pages. There is a hand written inscription on one of the blank pages as this was an"award" book to a student from the SOUTHERN HOME SCHOOL in 1868! Gettysburg Miniature Real Photos Culp's Hill Wood Souvenir Book Civil War Sites
REALLY WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF MINIATURE PHOTOS! Vintage Gettysburg Wood Book with miniature real photos. Early 1900s. I count 24. But photo paper is thick so could be more or less. Souvenir book commemorating the famous and deadly battle of July 1.2,3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pa. There is a round color photo of Union General George Meade. Who was appointed to command the Army of the Potomac whose troops subsequently defeated those of General Robert E. Lee on the wood cover. I was told the wood used to make this wooden souvenir book came from Culp's Hill in the early 1900's. This was purchased a number of years ago at the Nashville. Tenn. Civil War Show. These great little photographs are of many sites in and around the battlefield. Monuments, memorials, and historical buildings and views of battle areas such as Little Round Top, Cemetery ... moreHill, Devil's Den and others. This neat book is all wood. With a wood spine that has all the little black& white photos attached by string. It appears one of the original strings that held this book together was replaced with a piece of white thread. The photos inside are in nice condition for the most part, but some show some age, soil, and a few have partially come loose from their binding. Stamped on the front: Souvenir July 1-2-3 Gettysburg, Pa. The outer wood also has some staining on the top. 2 3/4 by 2 1/4 inches and about 1/2inch thick. Good condition for age. Please see the photos for other description. We pack all items well and always ship with a delivery confirmation number. All Sales Final. 1967 1st Edition THE CONFESSIONS OF NAT TURNER by William Styron Civil War
You are bidding on the 1967 1st Edition copy of the classic novel THE CONFESSIONS OF NAT TURNER by William Styron. Book is missing the dust jacket other than that it is in perfect condition. The front and rear covers along with the spine look brand new. The gold lettering on the front cover and spine look perfect. All four book corners are sharp. Spine is extremely tight as well as all the pages in the book. There is no writing or tears found anywhere in this book. An exceptional 1st edition copy of a classic novel. Shipping will be $3.50 in the United States. Here is a brief synopsis of the Novel: The novel is based on an extant document. The"confession" of Turner to the white lawyer Thomas Gray. In the historical confessions, Turner claims to have been divinely inspired, charged with a mission from God to lead a slave uprising ... moreand destroy the white race. Styron's ambitious novel attempts to imagine the character of Nat Turner; it does not purport to describe accurately or authoritatively the events as they occurred. Some historians consider Gray's account of Turner's"confessions" to be told with prejudice. And recently one writer has alleged that Gray's account is itself a fabrication. Styron takes liberties with the historical Nat Turner. Whose life is otherwise undocumented. The"Confessions" is largely sympathetic to Turner, if not to his thoughts. Thank you and Good Luck.
