The black/brown covers with gilt letters, beveled edges, and a blind stamped border are very nice except for worn corners and some wear to the ends of the spine. Vol. I was published in 1866 and Vol.II was published in 1868. Both volumes have bright yellow end papers. They are large folio volumes- 16 1/2 x 11 1/2. There are 826. From Its Commencement to Its Close, Giving an Account of Its Origin, the Secession of the Southern States, and the Formation of the Confederate Government, the Concentration of the Military and Financial Resources of the Federal Government. Together With Sketches of the Lives of All the Eminent Statesmen and Military and Naval Commanders, With a Full and Complete Index. From Official Sources. It was published in Hartford. Connecticut in 1865 by L. Stebbins, ... morethe year the war ended. There is gilt lettering on the spine and blind-tooled borders on the cover boards. The frontispiece is a tissue-guarded steel-engraved portrait of Abraham Lincoln. There are 39 tissue-guarded steel-engraved plates, including portraits of Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee, as well as views of the bombardment of Fort Sumter and the Battle of the Wilderness. Thirteen woodblock engraved maps show all the important military points. Condition: There is fraying and small chips at the head and tail of the spine. The cover boards are scuffed and rubbed, with minor edge wear, the hinges are slightly cracked, and there is scattered foxing on the first few pages and some of the engravings. The contents are sound and tight, with no rips or tears. All of the illustrations and maps called for in the table of contents are present and in good shape. HISTORY Cabinet Card 1858 Bucknell WWI/Civil War Centreville Bibb County AL
Included in this auction are some of the more RARE and VERY AUTHENTIC items obtained from the Cooper-Ellison Estate in Centreville. Alabama- These items were removed from a photo album, and a scrapbook of historical memoirs. The gentlemen in the photo are Jesse Dean Cooper, Civil War Captain, and Bucknell University Graduate(University at Lewisburg) Waller Raymond Cooper, son of Jesse Dean Cooper, who was in the Navy during World War I with several tours including the Mesopotamia and was an Oxford University graduate; andt a gentleman unknown to me- Judge Crawford. The photo was taken at Santa Rosa. California on July 15, 1909. The photo measures 5-3/4"x4" The Commencement Program measures 5-1/4"x3" and is dated July 28, 1858. The Bucknell Essays are dated 1858, and are signed J. D. Cooper. The items included in this auction ... moreare listed: 1) The Cabinet Card described above; 2) Essays from Bucknell signed by J.D. The home where these items were discovered was the Historic Vance-Ellison House in Centreville. Bibb County, Alabama The home was the first brick home in Centreville, Alabama and was built by Sheriff Vance. He sold it the next year to the Mr. John Tullis Ellison. His family has lived in the home until the last daughter was deceased in 2005(Rhoda Coleman Ellison, an unmarried woman) The Cooper side of the family has lived in the area for five generations. The Ellison side was from Montgomery and Union Springs. There are many military men(Civil War and World War I) prominent educators, and known lawyers and judges in this family- but, not knowing the family personally, I am not stating a particular name unless I have confirmed it with news articles or other items of proof. There are 15 unnumbered plates, though I may have missed some. ... moreThere is an ORIGINAL FOLD-OPEN FRONTISPIECE MAP that measures 12.5” x 13.5” when folded open. The map is tipped on to the blank gutter margin of the table-of-contents page. The map was printed by Mills& Co. Des Moines. Condition: The Covers are scraped. rubbed. And worn through at the corner tips and places along the edges, the gilt embossing on the front cover is mostly rubbed off, leaving the embossed titling and design looking more like a blind-embossing, the gilt titling on the spine remains bright, nonetheless the covers are sturdy, still doing their job, and handsome in a Harry Potter Hogwarts Library sort of way. The front and rear hinges look and feel as if they have been reglued at the gutter. The inner text pages are very nice, a bit of light shorelining to the bottom edge of some of the early and latter pages(not affecting text) just a spot or two here and there, overall just lightly used and still tight, bright, clean and unmarked. The tipped-in plates have shorelining/ water-staining to their bottom margin, obviously having occurred before the plates were tipped in, but the plates are still lovely and bright. The fold-open map has a 3” closed tear starting

Content: Frank writes about their wedding and honeymoon plans which will be restricted due to a lack of money. He also writes about uncle Sheldon in Cuba. New York. Condition: Folds/creases. Few small tears, and some yellowing/soiling. Provenance: The letter comes from a collection of letters and papers related to the King and Bell families of Pennsylvania. History: Francis“Frank” John King(b. January 26th. 1838 at Sudbury, England. d. January 28th, 1903 at Washington, D.C. was a union soldier in the 13th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment(aka 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, or the 1st Pennsylvania Rifles, Kane's Rifles) or better known as the"Bucktails" ... moreKing took part in many of the battles fought by the regiment. He reenlisted, like many in the regiment after it was mustered out on June 11th, 1864, and was sent to the 190th Pennsylvania Regiment. King was captured and spent the remainder of the war at Salisbury Prison Camp, North Carolina. He was married to Martha Bell(b. March 3rd, 1832 at Kings Run, Pennsylvania. d. The letter is to Dr. Henry Lyon who was a prominent Charlestown(Massachusetts) doctor and merchant. The letter deals with Dr. Henry Lyon’s son who was a midshipman in the U.S. Navy at the time. Just sixteen days after this letter was written, Everett would deliver a speech at Gettysburg which would be overshadowed by Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. History: Oliver Ambrose Batcheller(1842-1893) was a U.S. naval officer. He was appointed to the US Naval Academy in 1859 and took part in the American Civil War. He was involved in several ... moreactions during the war. Including the burning of the USS Mississippi near Port Hudson(1863) and the Battle of Mobile Bay(1864) while on the U.S.S. Monongahela. After the war he served on several ships and posts. Batcheller married Margaret Thompson Lyon, sister of Henry Ware Lyon, in 1871. William Eaton Chandler(1835-1917) was a New Hampshire lawyer. U.S. Senator and was Secretary of the U.S. Navy. Chandler graduated Harvard Law School in 1854 and started his practice in Concord. Chandler served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives(1862-1864) was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln judge advocate general of the U.S. Navy Department(1865) and later to First Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. In the 1870s, he became a newspaper publisher and was involved in New Hampshire state politics. Chandler was appointed by President Chester A. Arthur as Secretary of the Navy in 1882, and served until 1885. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1889 to 1901. William E. Chandler was born in Concord, New Hampshire. His father was Nathan S. Antique Book This auction is for a really nice and very rare antique book titled History of the United States. From the Earliest Period to the Administration of President Johnson. It was written by J. A. Spencer and it was printed by Johnson. Fry and Company back in 1866. The book is absolutely filled with steel engravings and the book appears to be volume III– not sure how many volumes there were. Looks like it covers 1810s to 1860 or so.
