We recently found a plastic bag of 10 old kitchen forks dating back as far as the Civil war. Each fork is different in regards to the handle material ... moreand one looks to have a bone handle. In at least three cases the tines are of different lengths. One fork with pewter on it appears to have its wood grips slightly pulling away from the fork body. Hand Written Civil War Era Journal 1861-1880 Ft Sumter England Threat Pres Elec
Up for bid is a 1861 through 1880 hand written journal by Jacob Rhodes from Indiana. The journal has approximately 70 pages front and back of Jacob's writing's. He was a preacher of some sort and much of his writings pertain to the Bible. God, and the condition of humanity. He wrote down many of his sermons. On December 4, 1861 he wrote a journal entry about the Civil War, specifically the Ft. Sumter attack by the"Rebels" South Carolinians and how the fight lasted several days and then they trampled the flag and replaced it with the Palmetto flag. A few days later he wrote about England threatening to start a war with the U.S unless they return two traitors to England named Mason and Slidell who were taken by Captain Wilkes. Jacob also wrote a letter, which was inside his journal, to a friend in 1880 and mentioned the Presidential ... moreelection asking what his friend thought about it and that he hopes the right man wins. There are a lot of interesting entries but I did not have time to read them all so I am highlighting what I found when I thumbed through the book. The first few pages of the book are account entries from 1850s concerning items he bought and sold, the remainder of the book is crammed full of his personal writings. The book is 12"x8" and the cover has wear that can be seen in the photos. The inside pages have expected discoloration and some stains but is in overall very good condition. Questions are always welcome. Thank you. PAYMENT& SHIPPING We accept payment through PayPal. Antique 1st Edition CIVIL WAR ERA Book BEECHENBROOK RHYME OF THE WAR Preston
Offered for auction is this rare Civil War Era book titled BEECHENBROOK; A RHYME OF THE WAR by Margaret J. Preston and published by KELLY& PIET out of Baltimore in 1867. It has a title page date of 1867 and a copyright page date of 1866 and I believe is a first edition book. The author wrote a collection of poetry regarding the Civil War struggles making this a rather unusual book. The dedication reads. TO EVERY SOUTHERN WOMAN, WHO HAS BEEN WIDOWED BY THE WAR, I DEDICATE THIS RHYME, PUBLISHED DURING THE PROGRESS OF THE STRUGGLE, AND NOW RE-PRODUCED-AS A FAINT MEMORIAL OF SUFFERINGS, OF WHICH THERE CAN BE NO FORGETFULNESS. Very strong words for a book of rhyme. It has black and white illustrations and is a very readable book. There are 106 pages and it measures about 8 1/2" by 6" I would rate this book as fair condition as it ... morehas wear on the covers and spine with discoloration on the covers also. There is wear on the edges, but the pages have very light yellowing and foxing, less than one would expect from a book this old. The pages are still fairly tight to the spine and there are no loose pages. There is a hand written inscription on one of the blank pages as this was an"award" book to a student from the SOUTHERN HOME SCHOOL in 1868! Shipping and handling to any of the lower 48 states is $7.00 and will be paid for by the winning bidder. It will be shipped Priority Mail for a fast and safe delivery. Fascinating. Original, 1858-1861 Manuscript Ledger belonging to Wanton Shippee, a Dry Goods/ General Store Proprietor from Usquepaugh, Rhode Island(Washington County) This amazing, original manuscript ledger measures approx. 8 ½” x 13” and contains approx. 455 pages of accounts related to various goods typically sold by a mid 19th century Dry Goods Shop. We have only given this account book a cursory examination- it came to us with a number of other early New England ledgers which we have sold over the past several years. The Ledger covers the period September 8. 1858 through some time in August 1861. Accounts were kept for local residents with family names that included, Bagley, Durfee, Knight, Barbar, Palmor, Shippee, Munroe, Woodmansie, Hoxsie, Greene, Briggs, Whitehorn, Read, Clark, etc. Each account lists the name of the person, ... morethe goods or services rendered and the amount due. There is often notations indicating that the account was settled. Typical entries include- sales of sundries, sugar, bleached cotton, boots, tea, soady" crackers, meal, soap, molasses, fluid“ bitters, tobacco, elastic suspenders, payment for a days work, etc. etc. etc. This wonderful. Pre Civil war Dry Goods/ General Store Ledger gives a fantastic insight into life in a small Rhode Island- the interactions between customers and the all important Dry Goods Store proprietor. The Volume is bound in its original full suede leather covered boards with red and black leather labels on the raided spine. The binding is intact and tight and the cover has some wear at the extremities but is still very attractive(see the scans below) The interior pages are complete, intact and sound. The pages are clean and crisp and very well preserved and the entries are neat and very legible. 1864 CIVIL WAR ERA LETTER from PARIS KENTUCKY to MOBILE ALABAMA Hildreth Family
This is a 2 page handwritten letter. Written on the front and back sides of a single fold sheet. Written on laid paper that feels sort of glossy. The letter is to: DEAR UNCLE” and is dated“PARIS. Feb 4th, 1864” At the top of the first page is written“Hildreth” And on the side of the back page the letter is signed“Your affectionate Nephew Hildreth” The letter measures 5.25” x 8.25” It is in generally GOOD condition. With some age toning, a few age spots, and creases from where it was probably folded to fit into a small envelope(envelope is not present) overall the letter remains solid and the writing is bright and clear. It took me a moment or two to realize that the letter is from PARIS in BOURBON COUNTY. KENTUCKY(and not Paris, France) The writer talks about(James) MAGEE. The BRITISH CONSUL to MOBILE, ALABAMA during the CIVIL WAR, who reportedly ... moreEXTORTED PROTECTION MONEY from BRITISH CITIZENS LIVING IN THE SOUTH; plans to move his daughter to Paris(Kentucky) andplans to make money on the Civil War by giving credit to buyers because“the continuation of the War. appreciates rather than depreciates the paper in which the debt for the purchase of said security need by paid. and other matters. I have provided 3 scans of the letter: front page. Opened showing both pages, opened showing the backside(with the handwriting from the front side showing through) My transcription of the letter is below(I could not make out all words. The handwriting being somewhat difficult) Paris Feb 4th 1864 Dear Uncle: Yours of Jan 9th is at hand and was a very welcome( both as showing you are well enough to write and as renewing a correspondence which in old times was. I believe, mutually agreeable- and perhaps sometimes mutually advantageous. Delightful Civil War-era child’s primer. The Union ABC” published in Boston by Degen, Estes& Company, bound in thread. This patriotic booklet, measuring 6¼" x 8½” is printed in red and blue and was meant to teach youngsters the alphabet and a history lesson, as well. Some of the entries include: H is for Hardtack you scarcely can gnaw. J is for Jig which the Contrabands dance. N is for Negro no longer a slave. P is the President who ruled the great nation, T is a traitor that was hung on a tree, and U is the Union our Soldiers did save. The back cover is missing. I bought little booklet at an estate sale in Texas and it was from the Lincoln family. It is amazing that this little booklet has survived all of these years. You will have a very hard time finding another one like this. The people that I bought it from said that ... morethe family was related to Abram Lincoln. The booklet has been well read and is in very rough condition with some smudges and corner bends and some of the pages are torn. The last two pages are missing. As old as this book is I am surprised that only the two pages are missing. This is a very rare little booklet with a picture for each alphabet letter(P is the President" shows Abraham Lincoln) that some Civil War collector would treasure. I am not an expert on Civil War memorabilia. So please ask questions if you need more info about this vintage item, and I'll do my best to answer them. I have taken a lot of pictures so you can see the condition of this book so you can be the judge of the condition. According to the family that I bought it from it was printed around the time of the Civil War. This is problem an item that should really probably be in a museum.
1864 Civil War Era Maine Insane Hospital Paper Augusta Patient Elvira Sullivan
Up for auction today is a Civil War Era handwritten document from the Maine Insane Hospital in Augusta. It dates from September 17 th. 1864 and it shows that $25.62 was received on behalf of Elvira Sullivan. Then signed, Jefferson Parsons Treasure By H. W. B. The Maine Insane Hospital has quite the historical background. There is so much on the web concerning this incredible hospital or asylum. The photos above are ones I scanned just to give you an idea of the building and it’s surroundings. One is from the early 1900’s and one taken after 2004 when it closed down and was abandoned. My printer’s ink is low and so they didn’t print up with the best of color. As far as the history of the asylum goes… Mrs. Catherine Winslow. The first woman employed at the Maine Insane Hospital. Was appointed matron when the asylum opened in 1840. The asylum ... morewas the product of a collaborative effort between the state and two private citizens, Reuel Williams of Augusta(married to Sarah Cony) and Benjamin Brown of Vassalborough. While early mental health institutions may fall far short of present-day standards for treatment for mental illness. The establishment of such places in the early nineteenth century was based, in part, on reforming care for the mentally ill. Prior to mental health hospitals, the mentally ill were the responsibility of their families, and if their families could not cope, they were either put in poor houses, put out on the streets, or locked away in jail. Mental health reformer Dorothea Dix(1802-1887) a native of Hampden. Maine. Worked closely with the second superintendent of the Augusta asylum. Isaac Ray(appointed in 1841) The building was state-of-the-art when constructed. All parts had ventilation, lighting, heating, and water. Men and women had separate wings. The story of women(and men) in relation to mental institutions is complex and not one easily addressed on a historic walking tour, but suffice to say that the state and the city of Augusta made an effort early on to provide care

1864 Handwritten Civil War Era Diary Albany Co NY Trip West to St Louis Omaha NE
This is such a rare diary. Out of the 25 years of collecting handwritten diaries and having read over 6.000 of them, I’ve only come across about 5(that I can remember) which were anything like this. The diary represents the incredible year of 1864, Civil War year of course. and every day has a full handwritten entry. I don’t know our authors name but there are several clues in this diary which will help in your research to find him. I believe our author is a young man. Possibly in his 20’s or 30’s. Not sure why he’s not fighting in the Civil War, although he does say he’s escaped the draft, but he sure gets his share of excitement living and traveling during these tumultuous times. He lives in Albany County New York or at least I think he does(which I’ll get to in a minute) and in the winter sells his farm and heads West going as far as Omaha ... moreNebraska. However he spends most of that time in St. Louis Missouri selling rat poison boxes to the local businesses and working in a saloon. It’s really a fascinating read. Let’s start from the beginning. The town that is mentioned most in this diary(while he’s in New York) is Amity. However he also mentions Green Island and is close enough to Troy to skate to it during the winter. In my researches I saw that the town of Amity is in another county then Green Island and Troy but I did see that there was an Amity Street in the town of Cohoes which is also in Albany County. So for all of you who know this area well. Was there once a little village of Amity nearby? In the beginning of this diary he sells his farm to a man with the last name of Flansburgh whom I found out was one of the biggest pioneer families in Albany County. Garret Flansburgh come to the area in the late 1700’s and owned a farm in Albany County. In fact I found photo on the web(dated 1911) showing the Garret Flansburgh Farm in Berne. Albany County New York. Is this the farm that use to belong to our author? I’ve included a scanned copy of the photo here just in case. So I think if you researched a

3 Handwritten Civil War Era Diaries Willis Babcock Adams Center NY 10th Reg NY
These three civil war era diaries all belonged to Willis Angel Babcock of Adams Center. Jefferson County New York. The diaries represent the years 1860, 1861 and 1866. Willis was born in 1840 to the parents of Nelson and Lucy Lee Babcock. He had two wives, Mary F. and Della Mary Potter Babcock. Willis passed away in 1917. Willis was a jack of all trades and appears to have been associated with the local school. Farmed, tapped sugar maples and bush, leased farmland and grew corn, lumbered, made furniture, attended lectures and concerts, went to the local and regional fairs, and was always sharing suppers with folk all around the county. Some notable times in his life that are written about in these diaries include him attending a lecture by Miss Olive Oatman who wrote the famous book" Five Years Among The Indians" with her sister ... moreMiss Ann Oatman and he drew her tattoo which was on her chin in his journal entry. I’ve scanned that entry above but if you have never seen or heard of Olive it’s an amazing story to say the least. I scanned a photo of her from the web so you could compare his drawing with her photo. Another lecture was by J. Watkins on the" IRRESPRESSIBLE CONFLICT" which was the growing tide of support for Abraham Lincoln and the threats of succession and conflict that would be caused if he was elected and the polarization of t he North and South. He attended a Brass Band Concert in Adams Centre which was assisted by the Stone& Fuller Orchestra for 15 cents. Had a great trip to Sackets Harbor for a big party with friends on the Great lakes, attended an address by Mr. Horace Greeley the famous editor for New York City, rode the train to Watertown to participate in the rally of the" Wide Awakes" which was a paramilitary zealot movement in support of Abraham Lincoln in the pre war years and listened to the firebrand speeches of Senator Benjamin" Bluff Ben” Lane of Ohio and Governor Raymond of New York, attends a balloon ascension by John LaMountain who was a ballooning
OFFICER OF 21ST U.S. COLORED TROOPS CIVIL WAR ERA ARCHIVE OF FIVE LETTERS
A small but interesting archive of five letters written by Lieutenant Albert Ashley. A white officer with the 21st United States Colored troops, to his sister Ella at Taunton, Massachusetts. The letters are written at the end of the Civil War while he is stationed in South Carolina with the Quarter Masters Department, and thus lack battle content. His apparent job is to assist in the return of troops and supplies to the north, both as an officer and later as a civilian employee. The letters are dated from August, 1865 until February, 1867, and are from various areas of South Carolina. He appears to have married a southern woman, and writes about home life and their baby. Many interesting comments about his work, written by an educated man, with good insight into Reconstruction by a northerner who has come to love southern life, and is even ... moreconsidering moving to Texas.Five letters, thirteen pages, size 5" x 8" to 8" x 10" folds, very good condition, two envelopes, need further research.Guaranteed original.$4.00 shipping. Aug 1863 Les Modes Parisiennes Peterson's Magazine Fashion Ladies Civil War Era From 1863. August Peterson's Complete Magazine Please email me with any questions. Please supersize the pictures for the best view. PLEASE READ THIS NOTE ABOUT SHIPPING CHARGES! If you have a question about the shipping charge that is clearly stated at the top of the listing. Please ask prior to the close of the auction. After the close no allowances can be made from the stated charges. This is done to ensure a fair auction for all. Other bidders take into account the cost to ship the item in their final/high bid, if the cost is lowered after the auction end there is no way to determine if other bidders would have been higher with a lower shipping cost. If there are any modifications to the stated shipping charges, I need to be make all bidders aware of ... morethis prior to the end of auction. While you may feel the shipping charges are excessive, many factors go into the calculation. There is the actual postage, then an estimate must be made as to the insured value(this cannot be billed separately) there is also the cost of packaging which may include, boxes, envelopes, labels, peanuts, bubble wrap, etc. These items are not free. Also, I do not do this for free and my time is valuable, if it takes me 10 minutes to pack an item and the cost of my time is a modest $12/hr(UPS charges $35/hr) that is an additional $2 in costs. There is also the cost of driving the item to the post office, if I pack and drive 10 items at a time to my local PO 10 miles away, the cost is roughly $3.90/Gal divided by those 10 items or $.39 per item. There is also now the added cost of ebay fees tacked onto shipping charges, for instance if the actual cost of the items above all total $5.00 the actual cost to me is about $5.50 with the additional fees, I am sorry but the associated fees are passed onto the buyer. So as you can see the actual costs of shipping an item far exceeds just the cost of the postage on the front of the box. If you feel that the costs

10 Handwritten Civil War Era Letters Stanton Wheeler 44th Mass Regiment 1862-64
There are 10 civil war era letters in this lot today and all of them have to do with the Wheeler and Stanton families. One of our authors is actually Daniel N. Stanton who was related to the famous New York Stanton’s. His Uncle was Henry Brewster Stanton who was an American 19 th century abolitionist and social reformer. His Aunt was Elizabeth Cady Stanton who was an American social activist. Abolitionist and leading figure of the early women’s rights movement. Just Google their name and their bio’s are extensive. Then their sons, Daniel’s cousins, were also huge when it came to political and social reform. Daniel married Harriet C. Wheeler on May 2 nd. 1864. She was born about 1839. Harriet’s parents were Samuel and Jane Wheeler. She had two sisters; Mary C. and Elizabeth W. Between the 10 letters there are a total of 31 handwritten pages ... moreof writing. Three of the letters also have their original envelopes but someone has torn the stamp off of them. Not only did Daniel write, but there is also a letter from Hattie and there are also some letters from Samuel, Hattie’s father. Then some letters are from a“Katy” but I didn’t research her or find out how she’s related. I do know that Hattie’s mother has passed away by the time these letters are written and her father Samuel is a widow. Then her brother Albert is serving in the 44 th Regiment which is fighting in the Civil War. The letters having to do with Mary show her as living in North Hampton Massachusetts under the care of Dr. Denniston. By the sounds of things she is quite sick and seems to be an invalid. And sure enough when I went to look it all up it looks like Dr. Edward E. Denniston ran a home for invalids at Springdale Northampton Massachusetts. It was established for the relief and cure of chronic disorder and disease. It was actually called the. Springdale Water Cure. I’ve quoted from a few of the letters as they are quite charming and full of news. This first letter was written by Hattie’s husband but 2 years before they were married. Boston. J
