Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts a

The Buried People: A Study of the Etruscan World by Sibylle von Cles-Reden. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 248 pages. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of Etruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: GOOD. Clean. Moderately read hardcover with(replacement) dustjacket. The Town of Hercules: A Buried Treasure-Trove by Joseph Jay Deiss. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 183 pages. Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ... moreISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. Dustjacket is actually very clean and presentable, but after 30+ years it simply shows a modest amount of shelfwear. The book itself is"new" in the sense it is clearly unread. Pages are crisp, clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound,

Publisher: University of California Press; 1976) This second volume of new translations is designed along the lines of the first Volume. In keeping with the ancient view. It defines literature broadly so as to include monumental inscriptions carved on stone and literary texts written on papyrus. Where the first volume outlined the gradual creation of Egyptian literary genres in the course of many centuries, the present one shows the elaboration of the genres within a single cultural period, and in a relatively short span of time. The literary production of the New Kingdom was much larger than that of the earlier periods. Hence even a whole volume devoted to it can do no more than focus on the highlights. Moreover. In the New Kingdom both the monumental inscriptions and the papyrus texts usually ran to greater length than their Middle Kingdom counterparts. The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. Together they illustrate the principal topics that were deemed appropriate to the always functional monumental context. Similarly the works written on papyrus have been selected to show the variety of themes and forms. And to single out those compositions that we outstanding in their day and have retained a timeless inte

Antique 1st Edition CIVIL WAR ERA Book BEECHENBROOK RHYME OF THE WAR Preston
Offered for auction is this rare Civil War Era book titled BEECHENBROOK; A RHYME OF THE WAR by Margaret J. Preston and published by KELLY& PIET out of Baltimore in 1867. It has a title page date of 1867 and a copyright page date of 1866 and I believe is a first edition book. The author wrote a collection of poetry regarding the Civil War struggles making this a rather unusual book. The dedication reads. TO EVERY SOUTHERN WOMAN, WHO HAS BEEN WIDOWED BY THE WAR, I DEDICATE THIS RHYME, PUBLISHED DURING THE PROGRESS OF THE STRUGGLE, AND NOW RE-PRODUCED-AS A FAINT MEMORIAL OF SUFFERINGS, OF WHICH THERE CAN BE NO FORGETFULNESS. Very strong words for a book of rhyme. It has black and white illustrations and is a very readable book. There are 106 pages and it measures about 8 1/2" by 6" I would rate this book as fair condition as it ... morehas wear on the covers and spine with discoloration on the covers also. There is wear on the edges, but the pages have very light yellowing and foxing, less than one would expect from a book this old. The pages are still fairly tight to the spine and there are no loose pages. There is a hand written inscription on one of the blank pages as this was an"award" book to a student from the SOUTHERN HOME SCHOOL in 1868! Shipping and handling to any of the lower 48 states is $7.00 and will be paid for by the winning bidder. It will be shipped Priority Mail for a fast and safe delivery. Gettysburg Miniature Real Photos Culp's Hill Wood Souvenir Book Civil War Sites
REALLY WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF MINIATURE PHOTOS! Vintage Gettysburg Wood Book with miniature real photos. Early 1900s. I count 24. But photo paper is thick so could be more or less. Souvenir book commemorating the famous and deadly battle of July 1.2,3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pa. There is a round color photo of Union General George Meade. Who was appointed to command the Army of the Potomac whose troops subsequently defeated those of General Robert E. Lee on the wood cover. I was told the wood used to make this wooden souvenir book came from Culp's Hill in the early 1900's. This was purchased a number of years ago at the Nashville. Tenn. Civil War Show. These great little photographs are of many sites in and around the battlefield. Monuments, memorials, and historical buildings and views of battle areas such as Little Round Top, Cemetery ... moreHill, Devil's Den and others. This neat book is all wood. With a wood spine that has all the little black& white photos attached by string. It appears one of the original strings that held this book together was replaced with a piece of white thread. The photos inside are in nice condition for the most part, but some show some age, soil, and a few have partially come loose from their binding. Stamped on the front: Souvenir July 1-2-3 Gettysburg, Pa. The outer wood also has some staining on the top. 2 3/4 by 2 1/4 inches and about 1/2inch thick. Good condition for age. Civil War Era "The Union ABC " Child's Old Alphabet Book Very Rare
Delightful Civil War-era child’s primer. The Union ABC” published in Boston by Degen, Estes& Company, bound in thread. This patriotic booklet, measuring 6¼" x 8½” is printed in red and blue and was meant to teach youngsters the alphabet and a history lesson, as well. Some of the entries include: H is for Hardtack you scarcely can gnaw. J is for Jig which the Contrabands dance. N is for Negro no longer a slave. P is the President who ruled the great nation, T is a traitor that was hung on a tree, and U is the Union our Soldiers did save. The back cover is missing. I bought little booklet at an estate sale in Texas and it was from the Lincoln family. It is amazing that this little booklet has survived all of these years. You will have a very hard time finding another one like this. The people that I bought it from said that ... morethe family was related to Abram Lincoln. The booklet has been well read and is in very rough condition with some smudges and corner bends and some of the pages are torn. The last two pages are missing. As old as this book is I am surprised that only the two pages are missing. This is a very rare little booklet with a picture for each alphabet letter(P is the President" shows Abraham Lincoln) that some Civil War collector would treasure. I am not an expert on Civil War memorabilia. So please ask questions if you need more info about this vintage item, and I'll do my best to answer them. I have taken a lot of pictures so you can see the condition of this book so you can be the judge of the condition. According to the family that I bought it from it was printed around the time of the Civil War. This is problem an item that should really probably be in a museum.

ANTIQUE BOOK " INQUIRE WITHIN OR 3700 FACTS FOR THE PEOPLE " 1858 PRE CIVIL WAR
An 1858 reference type book for about anything in at least good ++ condition. Tight binding. Covers are in nice shape, no writing/ marks of any kind. An interesting look at the 1858 timeframe. A charming compendium of interesting and edifying material from 1858. Like a time capsule. The book goes from subject to subject, shedding light on history. Exploring everything from literature to liniments, the book represents an early example of the miscellanies often seen in today's bookstores. Will combine shipping to save costs when possible. If you pay by noon I will ship the same day. If after noon I will ship the next morning unless it is a Friday then shipping will be Monday AM. You should also look at my other items for sale as there is no telling what you will find since I try to find unusual or collectible items. You just might find ... morethat special“something” If something is not right I will do everything I can to make it right as indicated by the 100% satisfaction rating. Most of that rating is for things sold. Also I am not a store. I’m just an individual selling things I find at occasional garage sales. From friends or from my stuff, so you never know what will show up for sale. You can trust the descriptions and pictures and feel free to ask any questions. Please examine pictures carefully as I try to show as much detail as possible. Including flaws. A word about shipping costs– I try to break even on shipping. But figuring costs before hand is not an exact science. I usually try to charge about $1.00 more than what I think the actual cost will be to cover all the incidentals(labels, ink, bubble wrap, padded envelopes, delivery to post office etc. Sometimes I miscalculate and am too high and sometimes to low. If too high I refund the difference and if too low I eat the cost(it has been as high as 8 or 9 dollars too low on large irregular shape items) If you think shipping is too high on an item let me know and I will review the costs. Otherwise I recommend you not bid on the item. 1.RcmdId ViewItemDe
