Community Services Inc. produced community directories in many communities across the United States. They were used as fund-raisers for various organizations. This one was produced in 1950 for Chapter 184 of the Order of the Eastern Star. In Selma, Alabama. Published just 15 years before Martin Luther King led the march from Selma to Montgomery, this booklet is a snapshot of everyday life in the Deep South at the very start of the Civil Rights Movement. In addition to the business directory. More than half of the booklet is filled with recipes, parenting tips, and lots of information needed to run a household in that era. It has survived in remarkable shape for a book that was intended to be used on a regular basis. The pages show some yellowing and a couple have slight creases.
