No matter of value! Superb antique solid brass door knocker of the Charles Dickens character Mr Pickwick from the book Pickwick papers. I would estimate this to date to around victorian era but please see pictures and judge for yourself. Does have a stamp on the back of a name/signature and numbers but I cant make the name out but looks as if starts with a B and the number looks like RD 798010. Looks as if at some time someone has put gold gilt on the knocker but a lot of this has now rubbed off. Still in original as found condition with aged patina so would benefit from a polish if so desired but still in very good condition. Measure approx: Just over 7 1/2in total length. Charles Dickens Twice-Told Tales. New York 1880
Twice-Told Tales is a collection in two volumes by. The first was published in the spring of 1837. And the second in 1842. 1] The stories had all been previously published in magazines and annuals. Hence the name. Hawthorne was encouraged to collect these previously anonymous stories by friend. Who offered $250 to cover the risk of the publication. 2] Many had been published in. Edited by. When the works became popular. Bridge revealed Hawthorne as the author in a review he published in the Boston Post. 3] The title. Twice-Told Tales. Was based on a line from's(Act 3. Scene 4) Life is as tedious as a twice-told tale, Vexing the dull ear of a drowsy man. 4] The book was published by the American Stationers' Company on March 6. 1837; its cover price was one dollar. 5] Hawthorne had help in promoting the book from. She sent copies of ... morethe collection to as well as to. Hoping that Mann could get Hawthorne a job writing stories for schoolchildren. 6] After publication. Hawthorne asked a friend to check with the local bookstore to see how it was selling. After noting the initial expenses for publishing had not been met, he complained: Surely the book was puffed enough to meet with sale. What the devil's the matter? 7] By June. Between 600 and 700 copies were sold but sales were soon halted by the and the publisher went out of business within a year. 8] Hawthorne complained that he still struggled financially. Editor suggested Hawthorne buy back unsold copies of Twice-Told Tales so that they could be reissued through a different publisher. Charles Dickens: American Notes; & Pictures From Italy; Gadshill Edition Vol 28
Charles Dickens"American Notes" and"Pictures From Italy" in one volume with gold gilt top edge. 517 pages. American Notes was written soon after Dickens had returned from his. First visit to America. That visit had, of course, been a great epoch in his life; but how much of an epoch men did not truly realize until, some time after, in the middle of a quiet story about Salisbury and a ridiculous architect, his feelings flamed out and flared up to the stars in Martin Chuzzlewit. The American Notes are, however, interesting, because in them he betrays his feelings when he does not know that he is betraying them. Dickens' first visit to America was, from his own point of view, and at the beginning, a happy and festive experiment. It is very characteristic of him that he went among the Americans, enjoyed them, even admired ... morethem, and then had a quarrel with them. Nothing was ever so unmistakable as his good-will, except his ill-will; and they were never far apart. And this was not, as some bloodless moderns have sneeringly insinuated, a mere repetition of the proximity between the benevolent stage and the quarrelsome stage of drink. It was a piece of pure optimism; he believed so readily that men were going to be good to him that an injury to him was something more than an injury: it was a shock. What was the exact nature of the American shock must, however, be more carefully stated. More Antique Books.Check out my! Froo www.froo.com | Froo Cross Sell. Dickens also used the journal to serialize novels that were concerned with social issues such as his own Hard Times(1854) and two books by Elizabeth Gaskell, Cranford and North and South. By 1851 the twenty-four page Household Words was soon selling 40,000 copies a week. Dickens published Household Words between 1850 and 1859 and during that time the journal campaigned in favour of parliamentary reform and improvements in the education of the poor. Dickens's was extremely hostile to the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act and wrote several articles on the workhouse system. Dickens was also concerned with public health and the reform of the legal system. When Dickens's argued with the publishers of Household Words in 1859. He closed the journal and replaced it with All the Year Round. The new journal still covered social issues but mainly concentrated on literary matters. Several important novels were serialized in All the Year Ro
