Written down circa 1850-52 by a soldier named O. W. Gilman. Also contains a diary from 1855 written by 18-19 year old Hattie Gilman. The book is from the Gilman family, Buffalo, New York. Judging by the officers mentioned in the journal and the places where he marched and camped. Gilman served with the 10th Infantry. The book begins with a few poems by Harriet(Hattie" L. Gilman of Buffalo(her relation to O.W. unknown) and then records O.W. Gilman's ... moreexperiences beginning on May 8, 1847, when he sailed from Fort Hamilton, NY bound for Texas and Mexico. The journal section totals 20 handwritten pages. After that, Gilman has written"Journal lost, Song book commenced Nov. 15th, 1852. This is followed by handwritten lyrics to songs, each with O.W. Gilman's name below and dated 1852, followed by poems and then a daily diary during 1855 written by Hattie, who notes that she turned 19 on August 10. Since Gilman has written"Journal lost" after the 20th page, he most likely wrote his account into this book from his original journal within the few years after his return from the war. Preliminary research found no known publication. Gilman records the difficult conditions under which the troops marched and camped. The burning sands, scorching sun and lack of water. He gives numerous details of the places they march to in Mexico, incidents including a few men who are killed by unknown assassins or drown in the Rio Grande, the death of General Hopping, and in November the visit of General Zachary Taylor and his retinue to Gilman's camp(at the School of Instruction in Mier) 7.5 x 6.5" Very readable. 1921 Handwritten Diary Travels Buffalo NY Canada US West Coast Dr Albert Persons
This is an outstanding travel journal that takes one couple on a one month trip(possibly more as it stops while they are on the West coast) starting in Buffalo New York. Traveling all the way through Canada to the West Coast of the US and ending up in Portland Oregon. The diary dates 1921 and has 83 handwritten pages and 67 of those pages are journal entries. The diary belonged to Lillian H. Hartshorn) Persons from Buffalo New York. Lillian was born in 1856 and married to Albert E. Persons who was a medical doctor. They had two children; Elizabeth(1882-1905) and Alberta(1885-1901) I found Dr. Persons fascinating obituary on the web and there is so much to this family including the fact that their two daughters died before them as you can see above. Also the fact that he had a personal assistant by the name of Jessie Secord(who was also shown ... moreas a member of their household) and after his wife died in 1943 he and Miss Secord moved to Cuba which is where Dr. Persons died. Now that’s a story in itself. Here is the entire obituary… Dr. Albert E. Persons for many years a Buffalo physician, and who had made his home in Cuba for the last two years, died early Saturday morning at Cuba Memorial Hospital. He would have been 93 years old on May 28. His death followed a fall two weeks earlier in which he suffered a fractured hip. Dr. Persons was well known in Buffalo. Where he practiced medicine for 63 years. He received his degree at New York University in 1881. And began his practice in Scio, and after a year or two in that, village, removed to Buffalo. He specialized in tuberculosis and throat diseases. From 1886 to 1893 he was a member of the medical faculty of Niagara University. Lecturing on hygiene and public health. Later he studied in Europe, in Vienna and other medical centers. In 1881 Dr. Persons married Lillian Hartshorn of Friendship. Who died two and half years ago. Two daughters, Alberta and Elizabeth. Died in their youth. Dr. Persons had been a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, of Buf
