EVERYBODY'S GUIDE; Or. Things Worth Knowing. Comprising Valuable Recipes, Information, and Tables for the Farmer, Mechanic, Merchant, Lawywer and ... moreDoctor, and all Classes of Workers in Every Department of Human Effort. By R. Moore. Illustrated. Published in 1884 by The World, New York. 7.5" x 5" cloth hardcover, with marbled finish. 410 pages. Condition: GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION. Exterior has minor wear as shown in photo. Binding is firm. Inner hinges strong. Text block firm. Text is clean and complete. Front blank endpaper is missing. No torn or loose pages. Good example of this scarce 130-year-old recipe and how-to book. Description: This is an early Victorian recipe book published for the use of home-makers. Farmers, shop-keepers, tradesmen, craftsmen, artisans- everybody, in fact, just as the title states. EVERYBODY'S GUIDE is a rare treasury of practical. Useful and long-lost recipes and how-to instructions. The quantity of information this book contains is staggering: Recipes for cooking and preparing meat and fowl. Cake, pie and pastry recipes. Confectionery and candy recipes. Recipes for beer and wine-making. And much, much more. Including cures and first aid. Household hints. Farm facts and fixes. Bee Keeping. How to make all kinds of dyes. A lengthy section on watch-making and watch/clock repair, jewelry making, gold and silver plating, gold and alloys, etc. Practical information and advice for tradesmen and mill owner/operators. And much, much more. Down below you’ll see that I tried my best to give you some idea of just how extensive the range of information is in this book. I went as far as I could– and still more than half of what’s in this book didn’t make it on to this page! It isn’t often that a book defies my ability to fully describe its contents. But this is one of those occasions. So after you spend a few minutes browsing through the summaries I created below, pause and remind yourself that we’ve only scratched the surface of the 19th-century wisdom contained herein. Good luck,

1900 UNCLE TOM'S CABIN Negro Slavery 1ST EDITION Civil War Antique vtg Book RARE
1900 UNCLE TOM'S CABIN === ARRANGED FOR YOUNG READERS === This auction is for an original 1900 1ST EDITION, THUS of" UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. As published into a special abridged edition just 4 years after Stowe's passing on July 1. 1896. Y OU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK! I t is dominated by a single theme: the evil and immorality of slavery. Stowe emphasizes the horrors of slavery on almost every page of the novel while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as the enslavement of fellow human beings. U nlike the 1852 1st edition. Published by John P. Jewett& Company in two separate volumes, this special First ALTEMUS' YOUNG PEOPLE'S LIBRARY EDITION! contains VOL. 1& 2 combined into one book. I t is beautifully illustrated with over 90 ILLUSTRATIONS! by ... morecelebrated artist of the time. U pon publication. Uncle Tom's Cabin ignited a firestorm of protest from defenders of slavery(who created a number of books in response to the novel) while the book elicited praise from abolitionists. Southern reactions ranged from forcing a bookseller in Mobile. Alabama to leave town for selling the novel to sending threatening letters to Stowe herself(including a package containing a slave's severed ear) The novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the United States, so much so in the latter case that the novel intensified the sectional conflict leading to the American Civil War. The book also helped create a number of stereotypes about Blacks, many of which endure to this day. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mammy; the Pickaninny stereotype of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. In recent years, the negative associations with Uncle Tom's Cabin have. To an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a"vital antislavery tool. In the first year of publication, 300,000 copies of Uncle Tom'

The work published by the author, in 1864 entitled, The Hawaiian Islands, their Progress and Condition under Missionary Labors, is to a large extent a personal narrative of the events and results of an official visit to the Islands, in the previous year. While necessarily embodying brief references to many historical facts, it made no pretensions to be a history of the mission. September. 1870 WMr. Anderson’s HAWAIIAN ISLANDS is one of the true classics of the early progress in the settling of the Islands by foreigners and the conversion of the Hawaiian people to Christianity. 1897 UNCLE TOM'S CABIN === MEMORIAL EDITION === This auction is for an original 1897 1ST EDITION! of" UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. As published into a special memorial edition just after Stowe's passing on July 1. Jewett& Company in two separate volumes, this special First MEMORIAL EDITION! contains VOL. 1& 2 combined into one book. In the first year of publication, 300,000 copies of Uncle Tom's Cabin were sold. The book eventually became the bes

Elbert Hubbard's Scrap Book Scrapbook 1923 Roycrofters w/ RARE Dust Jacket
This listing is for a 1923 edition of Elbert Hubbard's Scrap Book which was"printed and made into a book by the Roycrofters. At their shops, in East Aurora, Erie County, New York State. What makes this particular copy special is that it has its original"cloth-lined butcher paper" dustjacket. In all fairness, the dustjacket shows a considerable amount of wear. It is in two pieces, both of which are heavily soiled and torn but are nonetheless legible. The scrapbook itself has been well-preserved thanks to its dust jacket. The initiative page is loose but included and there are water marks on the first two blank pages and the portrait page, but the remainder of the pages are crisp, clean and firmly intact.

~Rare Civil War General Grant 1879 illustrated Book Tour Around the World
=" General U.S. Grant's tour around the world embracing his speeches receptions and description of his travels. With a biographical sketch of his life L. T. Remlap 1879. Chicago: J. Fairbanks and Co Grant world tour. Where thousands “knew the American Civil War as the war to free slaves and the world knew Ulysses S. Grant as the man who won the Civil War. The London Times noted that ‘after Washington, General Grant is the president who will occupy the largest place in the history of the United States’… The Grants dined with Queen Victoria…. and] in Japan Grant was the first person to have the privilege to shake the hand of the Emperor, who was considered a god…. ... moreGrant and his wife saw the canals of Venice, the Ganges River of India, the pyramids of Egypt, and the Gates of Jerusalem. This richly illustrated two-volume work documents that momentous world tour, after which Grant, who had become good friends with Young, persuaded President Arthur to appoint Young minister to China in 1882. After leaving the office of the presidency in 1877. Ulysses S. Grant embarked on a journey worthy of his legendary namesake, an around-the-world tour that took him from Europe to the Middle East and Asia over two and one-half years. Accompanying Grant was journalist John Russell Young, a wartime associate who was working in Europe as a correspondent for the New York Herald when Grant first arrived in England. On assignment for the Herald, Young joined the former president's entourage and faithfully recorded every detail of the grand tour- the sightseeing, official visits, travel conditions, and Grant's candid discussions with heads of state and other notables about the Civil War and other matters of state. So far from home, Grant felt free to speak his mind about his fe

1807 RARE HARTFORD WITS SATIRE Book EARLY AMERICAN Illustrated! Humor FEDERALIST
Up for auction is a very rare early American collection of satirical pieces. Entitled THE ECHO. Printed at the Porcupine Press by Pasquin Petronius in 1807. FIRST EDITION. “Pasquin Petronius” was the pseudonym of Richard Alsop, who was a member of the “Hartford Wits,” a Yale literary group who espoused Federalist ideas just after the American Revolution. Consists of a collection of magazine columns which appeared in the American Mercury magazine from 1791- 1805. Chief authors seem to be have been Richard Alsop and Theodore Dwight, with contributions by H.H. Brackenridge and others. Much of their output was satirical, lampooning society in the 1780s and 1790s. The poetic pieces here were cover a wide range of contemporary subjects, with titles such as “Tell It Not to Gath. Or, an Eulogy on Samuel Adams,” “Concluding Thoughts on the Indian ... moreWar,” “Speeches of Governor Hancock to the Legislature of Massachusetts, Nov. 8, 1792,” “Reply of President Washington to the Address of the Selectmen of Boston,” “Guillotina, or the Annual Song of the Tenth Muse,” and many more. The book is also notable for containing all the original engraved plates, including one entitled, “Negro Ball!” showing a group of African-Americans dancing; and another showing a group of women touching a large Native American man, with the caption, “in Crowds the ladies ran/ to see and touch the Tawny man.” A fascinating piece of early American political literature. Book is bound in original calf. Both covers are detached but cleanly, and spine title in intact. A lengthy note dated 1941 tipped onto the front flyleaf details the provenance of the work, which apparently belonged to four generations of the Gilman family from its publication in 1807. Rare. Good luck! Powered by

~Rare 1st Edition 1880 Ben Hur Lew Wallace Classic Book Tale of the Christ
=" Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ Lew Wallace 1887 Harper& Brothers Franklin Square. New York A classic and timeless work. “Lew Wallace said that he wrote Ben-Hur as a way to sort out his own beliefs about God and Christ. In doing so he inspired many readers by combining romanticism and spiritual piety common in sentimental novels of the 19th century with the action and adventure found in the more popular stories of the day. It prompted many clergy to reverse their church's long-held opposition to novels and actually encourage their congregations to read Ben-Hur. As a result helping it to become one of the best-selling novels of its time. Surpassing Harriet Beecher Stowe's ... moreUncle Tom's Cabin( 1852) as the best-selling American novel and retained this distinction until the 1936 publication of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. Book is a First Edition. Book in very good condition for its 130+ years. Buyer to pay $4 shipping, no reserve!
