Rare book“Memoirs of the Marquis de La Fayette. Major General in the Revolutionary Army, together with His Tour Through the United States” by Frederick Butler published in 1825 Published by Deming& Francis In decent condition. Part leather binding is later with binder's label on inner front cover. It has scuffs. Shelf wear, decorative paper loss on cover edges. Gilding is in good condition. There is a hand written owner's name and address in ink on the first blank page, which is part of the later binding. Front stiff decorative marbled end page has a bend in it. The interior is very age toned especially at edges and within the text with some foxing, stains and paper waving throughout. There are a few pencil marks on page margins, mostly just parentheses(I found one note behind a copperplate engraving. plus a few short notations, ... morewhich look like ink. Some pages have creases, but these are from manufacturing/printing. A very small hole like dent on page edges, which could have been insect damage. Still a readable and collectible copy of a very scarce book. No dust jacket as issued. Title page& a few copperplate engravings within the text. One looks like it has a bit of hand coloring in yellow(See last photograph. But I'm not sure if it is or not. Size: 4-1/4” x 7-1/8” x 1-3/8” thick Message me. If you would like more photographs. The Ledger numbers 200 pages with circa 30 to 40 entries per page. Measures about 9x14 inches. Expenses are described by their date, amount and nature. The ledger gives information about wages, purchases, sales, investments, etc. and offers insight into the workings of the ranch over those 5 years as well as a good source of reference to the businesses of the area with which it dealt. Up for auction today is what is known as a Letter Book. Before these technological times. In order to have a copy of your letters, you would write in these thick books that had tissue paper and with the use of carbon paper, each letter written would have its own copy. So these are the original copies of his letters written, both personal and business. Remember, these are the actual carbon copies, not the letters themselves(although there are a quite a few regular loose letters that I found between the pages. There are a total of 497 used pages used in this book that date between 1894-1900. The best thing about this journal of copied letters is that it belonged to a very prominent man by the name of Joseph Bradford Hardon; whom I might add was married to the second cousin of President Cleveland. Hew was born in Attleboro. Mass, was March 31 st. 1834 and thus the oldest member of our class. His father, comfort Hardon, moved his family to Martinsburg. Va. In 1841. He was the proprietor of various stage lines, till the opening of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ruined that business. Comfort Hardon was the son of Jacob Hardon. Who served in the Revolutionary War. Our classmate’s mother was Anna Hall Field. He lived in Virginia some ten years and began early to impart to others what he had learned in the usually poor schools in the vicinity of his home. The school that he taught in 1852 in Falling Waters was held in the edge of the woods in a log-house“chinked and daubed. whose furniture was of the rudest description. After studying the common branches, he essayed Latin and Greek, under the tuition of Presbyterian clergyman.
