Rare first edition of Johann Georg Hohmann's"pow wow" book. Der Lange Verborgene Freund(The Long Lost Friend) published in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1820. This book had a profound influence on Pennsylvania German folk culture and was reprinted many times. The hard covers are hand-decorated and have a leather spine. The leather is split on bottom edge of spine. Inside pages are tight and have age related foxing and staining. Complete with 100 pages. The name"Michael" is handwritten on an inside front page. Abraham Hunsicker was a General Conference Mennonite bishop who was excommunicated from the GC Mennonite church in 1851. This pamphlet deals with the circumstances surrounding that excommunication. Hunsicker was the founder of Freeland Seminary which afterwards became Ursinus College.

This German book is My First Book. A letter and spelling book in the beginning, and then Bible stories and catechism. It was entered according to act of Congress in the year 1875, by Reading Pennsylvania publishers Wackernagel& Bendel. The book has 86 pages. It has a red cloth binding and printed and illustrated paper-covered boards, an illustrated title page, and several charming block printed(at least that's what they look like) illustrations throughout the book. In fair condition, boards faded but still readable, worn and corners bumped and spine cloth mostly intact. Hinges cracked rendering textbook loose. Pages mostly in good condition with a moderate tone and some spotting especially in the first several pages and very scattered throughout. All is very readable. Chicago Fire Book 1872 Rare Old German Script Fold-out Maps Field & Leiter Ad
This item is an absolutely fascinating book about the Chicago Fire of October. 1871. It was published in 1872 and is printed in old German script. The title is Chicago Entwidelung, Zerstorung und Wiederaufbau der Wunderstadt. Loosely translated, we believe this means Chicago: the Development, Destruction and Reconstruction of a Wonderful City. The authors were Eugene Seeger and Eduard Schleger. The book measures 5" X 7 3/4" and has over 170 pages of text. There are three fold-outs. The map in the 4th scan shows the city and the extent of the fire. The illustration in the 3rd scan shows the ruins of the city, including the water tower. The 2nd scan shows an artist's idea of the city in flames. In addition to the history of the city and the fire and its aftermath, there are some wonderful ads. Field, Leiter& Co. the forerunner ... moreof Marshall Field's, has a full page ad and there are ads for other Chicago stores and businesses. As you can see from the scans, the condition of this item is poor. The back cover is gone and there is a lot of wear to the rest of the book. Also at some point there has been some water damage, but the book has no odor. The fold-outs have obviously been looked at many times, but they are still here. Perhaps the biggest drawback to this book is the fact that it was printed in old German script. But it is still a fascinating survivor of the months right after Chicago's great fire. Rare. German-language edition of the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus. Describes the Passion and Christ's Descent into Hell. Although the publisher is stated to be B. Ph. Bauer in Wien, Austria, it is possible that it was printed in Pennsylvania. A label pasted on the inside cover indicates that it is available at Graeter and Blumer's printery and bookstore in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

We have the a set of two reports of proceedings for the Pennsylvania German Society Volume XXV with proceedings at Lancaster on November 13, 1914, published in 1917, and also, Volume XIV with proceedings at Lebanon, October 22, 1903, published in 1905. Both of the volumes have marriage records, officers of the society, original copy of letters, journal excerpts, and manuscripts originally discussed and researched in the meeting for ancestral and genealogical purposes. The largest book measures at approx. 10 x 2 x 6.75. It appears that the XIV version's original soft cover has been cut out and placed on a later, hard copy version, as you can see the repair marks, and more likely rebound. The hardcover is in great condition, there is minor toning on the book edges and slight edge tears. The soft cover XXV edition has a very worn cover, worn& slightly loose spine, toning on the pages. ET ANTECESSOR EDITIO SEXTA AVCTIOR ET EMENDATIOR. It is EX LIBRIS JOHANN CHRISTOPH KUNZE. According to Wikepedia: KUNZE was born in Artern. A town in the Kyffhauserkreis district of Prussian Saxony. In 1758, when his parents died, he began studying at the orphanage in Halle, Germany. He received his classical training in the gymnasia at Rossleben and Merseburg, and then attended the University of Leipzig where he studied history, philosophy and theology. He worked as a teacher and an orphanage inspector before becoming ordained as a Lutheran minister.
